Who's new? LHP Chris Sale, RHP Tyler Thornburg, 1B Mitch Moreland, OF Steve Selsky
Who's gone? DH David Ortiz, 3B Travis Shaw, 3B Yoan Moncada, 2B Aaron Hill, C Ryan Hanigan, RHP Clay Buchholz, RHP Junichi Tazawa, RHP Koji Uehara, RHP Brad Ziegler
Projected lineup: 2B Dustin Pedroia (.318, 15 HR, 74 RBI), LF Andrew Benintendi (.295, 2, 14 in 34 games), SS Xander Bogaerts (.294, 21, 89, 13 SB), RH Mookie Betts (.318, 31, 113), DH Hanley Ramirez (.286, 30, 111) CF Jackie Bradley Jr. (.267, 26, 87), 3B Pablo Sandoval (.000, 0, 0 in three games), 1B Mitch Moreland (.233, 22, 60 with Rangers), C Sandy Leon (.310, 7, 35) or Christian Vazquez (.224, 1, 12)
Rotation: LH Chris Sale (17-10, 3.34 ERA), RH Rick Porcello (22-4, 3.15), RH Steven Wright (13-6, 3.33), LH Drew Pomeranz (3-5, 4.59), LH Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7, 4.71)
Key relievers: RH Craig Kimbrel (2-6, 3.40, 31/33 SV), RH Tyler Thornburg (8-5, 2.15 with Brewers), RH Joe Kelly (4-0, 5.18), LH Robbie Ross (3-2, 3.25), RH Matt Barnes (4-3, 4.05), LH Fernando Abad (1-6, 3.66 with Twins and Red Sox), RH Heath Hembree (4-1, 2.65)
Hot spots: Third base. Is this the year Sandoval is known more for his ability to play baseball than his physique? Sandoval, who missed all but three games last year because of a shoulder injury, showed up to spring training looking slimmer than years past. His production at the plate and agility on the field followed suit in the Grapefruit League. The Red Sox have shown they aren't afraid to take playing time away from the Panda if he doesn't deserve it. Josh Rutledge, a competent fielder and perhaps a better hitter against left-handers, is around just in case.
Outlook: Boston scored more runs than any team in baseball last year, and this year's club has the pitching to avoid another early playoff exit. Newcomer Sale is the best left-hander in the AL, an ace in his prime. Porcello is the reigning Cy Young Award winner. David Price, when he returns from an elbow injury, gives the Red Sox arguably the best 1-2-3 punch in the league. Ortiz retired, but he'll leave a bigger hole in the hearts of fans than in the lineup. Benintendi is a candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year award, while Betts played like an MVP at age 23. A bounceback season from Sandoval would give opposing pitchers no chance to breathe. Triple-A depth shouldn't be enough of an issue to prevent the Sox from challenging the Indians for the pennant. | | CLEVELAND: 2016: 94-67, first place, AL champions, lost to Chicago Cubs in World Series.
Manager: Terry Francona (fifth season).
He's Here: 1B-DH Edwin Encarnacion, OF Austin Jackson, LHP Boone Logan, RHP Carlos Frias, OF Wily Mo Pena, CF Bradley Zimmer, SS Eric Stamets.
He's Outta Here: 1B-DH Mike Napoli, OF Coco Crisp, OF Rajai Davis, C Chris Gimenez, 1B Jesus Aguilar, OF Marlon Byrd, RHP Jeff Manship.
Projected lineup: SS Francisco Lindor (.301, 15 HRs, 78 RBIs, Gold Glove, league-leading 15 sac flies in first full MLB season), 2B Jason Kipnis (.275, 23, 82, career-high 156 games), LF Michael Brantley (.231, 0, 7 in 11 games following shoulder surgery; .310, 15, 84, MLB-best 45 doubles, 15 SBs in 2015), DH Edwin Encarnacion (.263, 42, AL-high 142 RBIs for Toronto), 1B Carlos Santana (.259, 34, 87, 99 BBs, 99 Ks), 3B Jose Ramirez (.312, 11, 76, played 4 positions) or Giovanny Urshela (.225, 6, 21 in 81 games for Cleveland), RF Brandon Guyer (.333, 2, 14 in 38 games with Indians; .241, 7, 18 in 63 games with Rays; led majors with 31 HBP) or Lonnie Chisenhall (.286, 8, 57), C Yan Gomes (.167, 9, 34 in 74 games due to shoulder injury), CF Tyler Naquin (.296, 14, 43) or Austin Jackson (.254, 0, 18 in 54 games with White Sox before left knee surgery).
Rotation: RH Corey Kluber (18-9, 3.14 ERA, 227 Ks, third in Cy Young voting), RH Carlos Carrasco (11-8, 3.32, 25 starts due to injuries), RH Danny Salazar (11-6, 3.87, 25 starts, limited in postseason by injury), RH Trevor Bauer (12-8, 4.26, 28 starts, began season in bullpen), RH Josh Tomlin (13-9, 4.40, 5.90 strikeout-to-walk ratio).
Key relievers: LH Andrew Miller (10-1, 1.45, 12 saves, 70 appearances with Yankees and Indians), RH Cody Allen (3-5, 2.51, 32/35 saves), RH Bryan Shaw (2-5, 3.24 in league-high 75 games; 70 games in each of past four seasons), RH Dan Otero (5-1, 1.53, 70 2/3 innings), LH Boone Logan (2-5, 3.69, 66 games with Rockies).
Hot Spot: Brantley's Right Shoulder. An All-Star in 2014, Brantley missed out on the fun last season as the Indians won the pennant without him. His return is vital for Cleveland as it tries to make another deep run because he can help provide lineup protection for Encarnacion and stabilize an outfield that was under constant change in 2016. Brantley may not hit for the same extra-base power he had in the past, but he could still offer a high average and excellent defense.
Outlook: With perhaps the league's deepest pitching staff, the Indians are an AL favorite and appear poised to return to the World Series. Last year, they exceeded expectations and built a 3-1 Series lead against the Cubs before losing three straight ' including a dramatic Game 7 at home. One elusive win from the franchise's first championship since 1948. This season, the Indians will try to finish the job. There are injury concerns with Brantley and Kipnis, who won't be ready for the start of the season because of shoulder inflammation. Ramirez could slide over to help fill in at second base. But the addition of Encarnacion finally gives Cleveland the intimidating, middle-of-the-order slugger the club has coveted since the glory days of Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez and Albert Belle. Cleveland is a baseball town again as Indians fans spent on tickets this winter and are rallying around the club the way they did back in the mid-1990s. Lindor is on the cusp of superstardom, and one of the Indians' top priorities should be signing him to a long-term deal while he's still affordable. |
| | Indians' Miller might miss rest of Red Sox series -- and more
CLEVELAND -- The two teams with the two best pitching staffs in the American League will meet again Tuesday night at Progressive Field as the Cleveland Indians host the Boston Red Sox in the second game of a four-game series. The Indians won the opener 5-4 on Monday night on a game-ending throwing error. Cleveland and Boston rank No. 1 and No. 2, in that order, in starters' ERA, bullpen ERA and overall team ERA this year. The Indians, however, likely will be missing a key piece from their bullpen Tuesday night. Andrew Miller, who just came off the disabled list over the weekend, could be headed back onto the DL. Miller pitched to one batter in the seventh inning Monday, walking him, then left the mound after a recurrence of right patellar tendinitis. It is the same injury that caused Miller to be on the disabled list from Aug. 2-17. "He threw one pitch and really felt it," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "We'll go back to the drawing board. That's not what we were hoping for, but we'll let the medical people put their heads together and see what they can do." Miller is the Indians' most important reliever, and arguably the second most valuable player on the team after Corey Kluber. It would not be a surprise if Miller is sidelined for an extended period in order to get him healthy for the playoffs. The Tuesday pitching matchup is a pair of right-handers, Boston's Doug Fister (2-6, 5.56 ERA) vs. Cleveland's Carlos Carrasco (12-5, 3.76). Carrasco is having the best year of his career. He ranks in the top 10 in the league in wins, ERA, winning percentage, strikeouts and opponents' batting average. However, the Red Sox roughed up Carrasco in his last start against Boston, a 12-10 Cleveland loss on Aug. 1. Carrasco was knocked out of that game after 1 2/3 innings, having given up five runs on six hits with three walks and one strikeout. He has rebounded since then, and in his past two starts, he is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA. In those outings, he held opposing hitters to a .156 batting average with 19 strikeouts and three walks in 13 innings. In six career appearances vs. Boston, four of them starts, Carrasco is 1-1 with a 6.43 ERA. Two of Fister's past three starts came against the Indians. One was very good, the other was not. On July 31, Fister beat Cleveland 6-2, pitching 7 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks. However, on Aug. 14, Fister took the loss in a 7-3 Indians victory. He pitched four innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and four walks. Fister has plenty of experience pitching against the Indians. In 18 career starts against Cleveland, the 33-year-old veteran is 6-5 with 3.35 ERA. "There's a lot of familiarity on both sides, particularly against a team that's not in your division," Red Sox manager John Farrell told MLB.com. "There might be another new face that (Fister) hasn't faced in the (Cleveland lineup) with the way their guys have come back off the disabled list. "He's pitched a couple good ballgames for us. We're going to need it again." |
