| |  | TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
| | CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''

With Justin Masterson traded and Zach McAllister soon heading to the minors, the Cleveland Indians' starting rotation is in flux outside of Corey Kluber.
That's certainly not an ideal situation for a club fighting to make up ground in a playoff race.
T.J. House will be recalled for his 10th start this season as he faces the major league-worst Texas Rangers at home Saturday night.
Kluber has been outstanding while ranking among the AL leaders in wins and ERA, but Indians starters have a 4.39 ERA that ranks 13th in the league.
Masterson struggled before being dealt to St. Louis at the non-waiver trade deadline, and McAllister was even worse before being designated for assignment Friday.
Cleveland (54-55) had dropped six of eight before beating the Rangers 12-2 in Friday's series opener. The Indians sit 5 1/2 games behind Toronto for the second wild-card spot and 6 1/2 back of Detroit in the Central.
House (1-2, 4.50 ERA) will try to fill a gap in the rotation in his sixth stint with Cleveland this season. He was sent to the minors July 22 after giving up three runs, six hits and three walks in five innings of a 4-3 loss to Minnesota the previous day.
"He did throw a lot of strikes, just not the quality strikes that we've kind of seen," manager Terry Francona said.
The rookie left-hander was roughed up by the Rangers on June 9, allowing six runs in 3 1-3 innings of a 17-7 victory.
Much like that contest, Cleveland's offense feasted on Texas pitching Friday as David Murphy went 4 for 4 with a two-run double in the Indians' six-run fifth inning.
Murphy, 11 for 22 over his last seven games, spent his previous 6 1/2 seasons with the Rangers before signing a two-year deal with Cleveland in the offseason.
"Obviously when you're playing against your friends, a lot of guys I played with over there are gone, but playing for bragging rights, it can be fun," Murphy said.
Mike Aviles had three RBIs and Michael Brantley added three hits.
"We haven't had many games like that," Francona said. "We've had so many close games. It's nice to have some breathing room."
Cleveland will look to keep its offense going against Texas' Miles Mikolas (1-3, 8.54), who will be making his sixth start since being called up from the minors July 1.
Mikolas' best major league start and first win since 2012 came July 21 when he allowed two runs in 7 1-3 innings of a 4-2 win over the New York Yankees, but he allowed eight runs and walked four in 4 2-3 innings of Sunday's 9-3 loss to Oakland.
"I fell into some of the bad habits that we'd been working on in the bullpen," the right-hander said. "I executed well and made the transition well in the New York game, and kind of fell back. I'm going to work on it."
Texas (43-66) has scored just six runs during a four-game road losing streak. Adrian Beltre went 2 for 2 with a walk and Elvis Andrus had two hits with an RBI in the opener for the Rangers, who have dropped 17 of 20 away from home.
Cleveland has won four straight overall and at home versus Texas.
