KEY GAME INFORMATION
TORONTO: TORONTO (AP) - All winter long, the Blue Jays' primary concern was upgrading the starting pitching. The biggest story in Toronto this spring, though, is the one about the free agent arm that got away.
After months of inaction, the Blue Jays thought they'd landed right-hander Ervin Santana on a one-year deal in early March. But when injury concerns flared up in Atlanta, Santana signed a similar deal with the Braves instead.
''I think it's pretty obvious we were involved, it didn't work out. I'm trying to take the high road here,'' general manager Alex Anthopoulos said after Santana turned him down, saying he'd rather pitch in a spacious National League park than face AL East foes in Toronto's hitter-friendly dome.
Anthopoulos, who'd previously come ''extremely close'' to acquiring a starter through trade, must now start the season with almost the same staff he took north last year. Right-handed knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, the 2012 NL Cy Young winner, will be the opening-day starter again, while left-hander Mark Buehrle gets the third slot.
But none of the other three leading contenders, right-handers Brandon Morrow and Drew Hutchison, and left-hander J.A. Happ, have ever pitched 200 innings, and all three are coming off injuries. Morrow was limited to 10 starts last year by a nerve problem in his forearm, Hutchison hasn't pitched in the majors since elbow surgery in 2012, and Happ missed most of 2013 after being hit in the head by a line drive. Happ dimmed his own chances with an awful spring.
Santana, who has topped the 200-inning mark five times, would have given the Blue Jays valuable depth. Without him, there's more chance they'll need starts from touted but untested youngsters like Kyle Drabek, Sean Nolin, and Marcus Stroman.
Still, a confident Dickey insisted Santana would have been more ''bonus'' than ''necessity'' to Toronto. ''I feel like we have what we need,'' he said.
CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''

*Blue Jays-Indians Preview* ===========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Toronto (8-6) at Cleveland (7-7), 7:05 p.m. EDT

After leading the playoff-qualifying Cleveland Indians with 14 victories in 2013, Justin Masterson hasn't done much to help a rotation that has been one of the majors' worst so far this season.

Perhaps he'll be able to turn things around against a Toronto Blue Jays team that he's dominated in his Cleveland career.

Masterson looks to help the Indians win for only the third time in eight games Friday night in the opener of a three-game set against the Blue Jays.

Although he won seven of his first nine decisions en route to a career-best win total last season, Masterson (0-0, 5.87 ERA)hasn't been able to replicate that start since throwing seven shutout innings in the 2014 opener.

The right-hander has given up 12 runs - 10 earned - 14 hits and walked eight over 15 1-3 frames in his last two outings. On Saturday, he was charged with six runs, seven hits and five walks in 4 2-3 innings of a 12-6 win at the Chicago White Sox.

"I was decently happy with the way things took place as far as how I felt when I let go of the ball," Masterson said. "Sometimes after letting go of the ball, the things I can't control, they got me a little bit."

Masterson isn't the only starter struggling for the Indians (7-8), whose rotation has a 5.18 ERA that ranks among the highest in baseball. Danny Salazar allowed five runs over 4 2-3 innings in a 7-5 loss at Detroit on Thursday.

Masterson may be able to get on track since he's 2-0 with a 1.30 ERA in his last four starts against the Blue Jays (8-8). He's also 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in four home games - three starts - versus Toronto since joining the Indians.

Brett Lawrie (0 for 6), Colby Rasmus (1 for 10) and Edwin Encarnacion (2 for 14) have struggled when facing Masterson, though Melky Cabrera has gone 12 for 24 with a home run.

Cabrera, however, failed to get a hit for the first time in 15 games Thursday when the Blue Jays were shut out for the first time in a 7-0 loss in the opener of a doubleheader at Minnesota.

In Game 2, Jose Bautista hit his sixth home run before the bullpen allowed six runs in the eighth inning of a 9-5 loss. They played both games without Adam Lind, who is hitting .324 and is day to day with lower-back tightness.

Toronto starter Drew Hutchison (1-1, 3.68) was hit hard in his only home start, but he's yet to allow a run over 11 1-3 innings in his two on the road. However, he's received just one run of support in his last two outings.

"I have all the confidence in the world in our offense, just like the rest of our team does," Hutchison said. "It doesn't change my mindset one bit. My job is to go out and put up zeroes."

The right-hander will try to find a way to cool off Lonnie Chisenhall, who had a career-high four hits Thursday. He's batting .522 while hitting safely in all seven games this season, but is just 3 for 24 lifetime versus Toronto.

Michael Brantley went 2 for 5 with a homer Thursday, and is 17 for 32 (.531) during a nine-game hitting streak against the Blue Jays.

Cleveland won four of the six meetings last season.
