| | | TEXAS: HITTING: 2B IAN KINSLER will lead off again. A few less at-'em balls and he's an MVP candidate. SS ELVIS ANDRUS is coming along offensively, but his poor SB% could lead to fewer attempts. Injuries are the only thing that will keep OF JOSH HAMILTON out of the MVP discussion. He'll likely start declining at age 35, but DH MICHAEL YOUNG can't help but put up numbers batting cleanup in this lineup. 3B ADRIAN BELTRE was unstoppable in Arlington. Like Hamilton, he's an MVP candidate if healthy. Injuries are piling up for OF NELSON CRUZ, who still has monster power but doesn't run as much anymore. C MIKE NAPOLI is MLB's best offensive catcher and will play some 1B on 'off' days. Because their lineup is stacked, Texas can play defensive-minded/offensively limited 1B MITCH MORELAND. And because Ron Washington would prefer to play Hamilton in left, speedy CF CRAIG GENTRY looks to have the edge over DAVID MURPHY for the starting job in center. Cuban import LEONYS MARTIN will start the season in Triple-A, but JULIO BORBON could earn a significant OF role. STARTING PITCHING: COLBY LEWIS can overpower when he's on, but as a flyball pitcher in cozy Arlington he's going to have a handful of ugly days. The much-ballyhooed YU DARVISH brings a deep arsenal of pitches and a durable frame from Japan. He's probably the best Japanese arm to ever cross the Pacific. Lefty MATT HARRISON solidified his rotation spot. He has topped out as a respectable No. 3-type starter. DEREK HOLLAND has top-of-the-rotation upside. Consistency has been an issue, but hopefully another year and some big postseason moments helped to cure that. The big story is NEFTALI FELIZ moving to the rotation. He was considered a future ace in the minors, but the transition might not be easy. His K/BB ratio plummeted last year and his flyball tendencies could spell disaster in Arlington. Keep in mind the Rangers made a successful closer-to-ace switch with C.J. Wilson. Top prospect MARTIN PEREZ could be an option in the second half. RELIEF PITCHING: Veteran JOE NATHAN was brought in and handed the closer's job. He struggled in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, but most pitchers who've had the procedure don't come all the way back until their second full season. If Nathan falters, MIKE ADAMS could be next in line. He had no trouble transitioning from pitcher-friendly San Diego in the National League to hitter-friendly Arlington and the A.L.'s superior bats. KOJI UEHARA would also be in the closer discussion if Nathan falters, but he was unhappy about being traded from Baltimore and faltered for the Rangers late last year. ALEXI OGANDO got a huge boost from his defense and his bullpen before a late-season collapse. He threw by far a career-high in innings; better stamina would allow him to take the next step and possibly rejoin the rotation. | | CLEVELAND: HITTING: SS ASDRUBAL CABRERA's reinvented swing, modeled after Ben Zobrist, likely led to his power surge. OF GRADY SIZEMORE is back on a one-year deal, so he has plenty of financial incentive to stay healthy. But he will begin the season on the DL after back surgery. OF SHELLEY DUNCAN is expected to get more playing time in replacing Sizemore, but speedy OF EZEQUIEL CARRERA is also waiting for his shot. Injuries and off-the-field issues spoiled OF SHIN SOO-CHOO's 2011, but there's a good chance he bounces back . . . OF MICHAEL BRANTLEY does everything well enough to get a regular gig in center. C CARLOS SANTANA is developing into a middle-of-the-order run producer. DH TRAVIS HAFNER can't be trusted to stay healthy or to produce power numbers. After another down year, 1B MATT LaPORTA will have to sit and watch CASEY KOTCHMAN start at first more often than not. 3B LONNIE CHISENHALL will get his chance to play every day, but dwindling production the past two years is a concern. 2B JASON KIPNIS will get first crack at second base. He's got nice pop for a middle infielder. STARTING PITCHING: JUSTIN MASTERSON's strikeout rate continues to decline, and he still gets hit hard by lefties. Still, his strong groundball rate guarantees he's a solid middle-of-the-rotation arm at worst. His velocity dropped last year, and there's no telling if UBALDO JIMENEZ will ever regain his early 2010 form. He's the definition of high-risk, high-reward. DEREK LOWE was a decent middle-of-the-rotation arm in the National League, but now he must adjust to facing superior A.L. lineups . . . Healthy again, JOSH TOMLIN will remain in the rotation. He's hittable, throwing strikes and relying on his defense. Former Twins hurler KEVIN SLOWEY rounds out the staff. Although he posted a 6.67 ERA last year, Slowey has exhibited pinpoint control in his career with just 84 walks in 532.2 innings, tallying a .470 K-to-BB ratio. JEANMAR GOMEZ is a decent minor league arm, but his ceiling is low (long term and in the immediate future). CARLOS CARRASCO may not pitch in the bigs this year after Tommy John surgery. RELIEF PITCHING: CHRIS PEREZ is entrenched as the closer, but he was a bit of a disappointment last season. His velocity dropped slightly, and his strikeout rate fell off a cliff. If Perez gets hurt, VINNIE PESTANO is next in line for saves. He may be undersized, but his stuff is overpowering. TONY SIPP proved he can get out righties too, but his value is as a lefty-on-lefty guy. Ditto for sidearmer JOE SMITH, who is deadly on righties. But it would be a surprise if he shut down lefties for a second straight year. RAFAEL PEREZ has been hampered by shoulder soreness in Spring Training, but the lefty should once again be serviceable in the late innings this year. |

*Rangers-Indians Preview* =========================
By JONAH ROSENBLUM STATS Writer
Texas (56-46) at Cleveland (53-48), 7:05 p.m. EDT
The Cleveland Indians' lineup came alive at the end of their six-game road trip. It didn't miss a beat in their return home.
The Indians will look to ride their streaking offense to a third straight win as they host the Texas Rangers on Saturday night.
After batting .184 during the first four games of a six-game road trip, Cleveland (54-48) has recorded double-digit hits in three straight contests. That culminated in an 18-hit performance in the Indians' 11-8 extra-inning victory over the Rangers on Friday.
Three of those came in the 11th, with Ryan Raburn's homer ending it after Cleveland blew a six-run lead.
"We may not have the best talent, but we have by far one of the tightest teams," first baseman Nick Swisher said. "No one was excited about going to extra innings, but we're always going to keep fighting hard and finding ways to win."
Asdrubal Cabrera, Mike Aviles and Michael Brantley each finished with three hits. It was Brantley's first multi-hit performance since July 8.
The Indians' offense is starting to come alive, but their rotation has been sparkling for some time. Cleveland's starters have posted a 2.04 ERA since July 9, the best in the AL in that span.
It's hard to be much better than Justin Masterson (11-7, 3.60 ERA) was his last time out. The right-hander held Minnesota hitless through six, and wound up leaving after seven having given up only Brian Dozier's broken-bat bloop double and one run in a 7-1 win on Sunday.
"He was filthy," Dozier told MLB.com. "The whole game, he kept powering sinkers and just fell off the table."
Masterson has been anything but filthy against Texas (56-47), going 0-4 with a 7.54 ERA in four career starts. He hasn't faced the Rangers since September 2011, though.
Yu Darvish (9-4, 2.86) is also coming off a strong start, as he surrendered two hits in 6 1-3 innings of Texas' 3-0 win over the New York Yankees on Monday. After hitting the first batter he faced, the right-hander retired 11 straight.
Darvish has failed to last seven innings in five straight starts. After he went seven-plus in seven of eight starts, averaging 15.9 pitches per inning, the right-hander has been less efficient of late, with 17.8 pitches per inning.
He needed 112 pitches to get through six in his lone start against the Indians, allowing four runs but striking out 11 in a 4-2 loss May 6, 2012.
Darvish had the highest run-support average in the majors through his first nine starts, getting 9.05 runs per nine innings, but that offensive assistance has all but disappeared over the past two months. He's received 2.77 runs of support on average over his past 10 outings, one of the worst marks in the AL.
The Rangers, who have lost 10 of 13, finally saw their bats come to life late Friday. An offense that had topped four runs just once in 12 games coming into Progressive Field scored two apiece in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
"We could have very easily given up, but we didn't," manager Ron Washington said.
Elvis Andrus scored twice and singled to extend his hitting streak to eight games. He has five hits and four strikeouts in 10 career at-bats against Masterson.
David Murphy is 4 for 4 with a pair of homers against Masterson, while A.J. Pierzynski is 14 for 33 (.424).
Adrian Beltre came into Cleveland hitting just .214 since the All-Star break, but he had three hits Friday.
