| |  | OAKLAND: HITTING: 2B JEMILE WEEKS may not be a legitimate .300 hitter, but he's still the best option they have at the leadoff spot. C KURT SUZUKI seemingly hits as many line outs as anyone in baseball. He has a solid bat for a catcher and qualifies as a middle-of-the-order option in Oakland. OF JOSH REDDICK is more of a line-drive hitter than a 25-HR guy, and he doesn't yet have the plate discipline to approach .300. 1B BRANDON ALLEN is an all-or-nothing hitter, but his potential for much-needed power should be enough for him to beat out DARIC BARTON. SS CLIFF PENNINGTON has quietly developed into a serviceable regular. With 3B SCOTT SIZEMORE out for the season with a torn ACL, either ERIC SOGARD or JOSH DONALDSON will win the job at third base. Neither player has reached 80 career at-bats yet. Highly-coveted Cuban OF YOENIS CESPEDES inked a four-year deal with Oakland, and will be expected to produced in the heart of the lineup immediately. OF COLLIN COWGILL is undersized, but has shown impressive power in the minors. The DH spot will fall to Allen when Barton is in the lineup. When he's not, it will be filled by such Quadruple-A types as KILA KA'AIHUE and CHRIS CARTER.
STARTING PITCHING: BRANDON McCARTHY reclamation project worked out nicely. He's an injury risk, but when healthy he's one of baseball's better middle-of-the-rotation arms. BARTOLO COLON pitched better than expected with the Yankees last year (7.4 K/9, 4.00 ERA), and should perform just as well in his new spacious ballpark. DALLAS BRADEN (shoulder) and BRETT ANDERSON (elbow) are both question marks after major surgeries. Braden's return date has been pushed back to early May, while Anderson will might not take the hill until June. The jewel of the Trevor Cahill trade, hard-throwing righty JARROD PARKER has a chance to make a big impact if his arm is recovered from 2009 Tommy John surgery. The Gio Gonzalez trade landed Oakland TOMMY MILONE and BRAD PEACOCK, both of whom are coming off impressive minor-league seasons. They'll compete for rotation spots this spring. TYSON ROSS could get a few starts, but he's gotten very hittable over the past year. They're in no hurry to start the arbitration clock of top prospect SONNY GRAY, but he should make some late-season starts.
RELIEF PITCHING: With Andrew Bailey gone, righty GRANT BALFOUR (2.47 ERA, 1.03 WHIP) will get the first chance to close games. Though his occasional bouts with command issues make him a risk. If Balfour falters, BRIAN FUENTES will get the next look because of his ninth-inning experience and strong second half of 2011 . . . Long a favorite inside the organization, injury-prone righty JOEY DEVINE has long been considered a future closer and should get some late-innings duties. The highest upside option for a future closer is 25-year-old righty FAUTINO DE LOS SANTOS. He has overpowering stuff but his command comes and goes. | | CLEVELAND: HITTING: SS ASDRUBAL CABRERA's reinvented swing, modeled after Ben Zobrist, likely led to his power surge. OF GRADY SIZEMORE is back on a one-year deal, so he has plenty of financial incentive to stay healthy. But he will begin the season on the DL after back surgery. OF SHELLEY DUNCAN is expected to get more playing time in replacing Sizemore, but speedy OF EZEQUIEL CARRERA is also waiting for his shot. Injuries and off-the-field issues spoiled OF SHIN SOO-CHOO's 2011, but there's a good chance he bounces back . . . OF MICHAEL BRANTLEY does everything well enough to get a regular gig in center. C CARLOS SANTANA is developing into a middle-of-the-order run producer. DH TRAVIS HAFNER can't be trusted to stay healthy or to produce power numbers. After another down year, 1B MATT LaPORTA will have to sit and watch CASEY KOTCHMAN start at first more often than not. 3B LONNIE CHISENHALL will get his chance to play every day, but dwindling production the past two years is a concern. 2B JASON KIPNIS will get first crack at second base. He's got nice pop for a middle infielder.
STARTING PITCHING: JUSTIN MASTERSON's strikeout rate continues to decline, and he still gets hit hard by lefties. Still, his strong groundball rate guarantees he's a solid middle-of-the-rotation arm at worst. His velocity dropped last year, and there's no telling if UBALDO JIMENEZ will ever regain his early 2010 form. He's the definition of high-risk, high-reward. DEREK LOWE was a decent middle-of-the-rotation arm in the National League, but now he must adjust to facing superior A.L. lineups . . . Healthy again, JOSH TOMLIN will remain in the rotation. He's hittable, throwing strikes and relying on his defense. Former Twins hurler KEVIN SLOWEY rounds out the staff. Although he posted a 6.67 ERA last year, Slowey has exhibited pinpoint control in his career with just 84 walks in 532.2 innings, tallying a .470 K-to-BB ratio. JEANMAR GOMEZ is a decent minor league arm, but his ceiling is low (long term and in the immediate future). CARLOS CARRASCO may not pitch in the bigs this year after Tommy John surgery.
RELIEF PITCHING: CHRIS PEREZ is entrenched as the closer, but he was a bit of a disappointment last season. His velocity dropped slightly, and his strikeout rate fell off a cliff. If Perez gets hurt, VINNIE PESTANO is next in line for saves. He may be undersized, but his stuff is overpowering. TONY SIPP proved he can get out righties too, but his value is as a lefty-on-lefty guy. Ditto for sidearmer JOE SMITH, who is deadly on righties. But it would be a surprise if he shut down lefties for a second straight year. RAFAEL PEREZ has been hampered by shoulder soreness in Spring Training, but the lefty should once again be serviceable in the late innings this year. |

After struggling with the Oakland Athletics last season, the Cleveland Indians have fared well against them in 2013.
While the surging Indians try for a third straight victory over the A's, Justin Masterson hopes to avoid a third consecutive rough outing and end his recent struggles against the visitors Wednesday night at Progressive Field.
Cleveland (16-14) dropped eight straight to Oakland before winning the first two of this four-game set. Zach McAllister and two relievers held the A's (18-16) to six hits and Yan Gomes delivered a sacrifice fly as it won for the eighth time in nine games, 1-0 on Tuesday.
"When you pitch you have a chance to win the game," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "We didn't do a whole lot offensively."
The Indians have allowed an average 2.3 runs and recorded three shutouts during those nine contests.
Masterson (4-2, 3.64 ERA) allowed one run over 22 innings to win his first three starts, but is 1-2 with a 6.48 ERA in the last four. He's yielded 12 runs in 13 innings of the last two, including five and eight hits over 6 2-3 frames while not factoring in the decision of a 7-6 win over Minnesota on Friday.
The right-hander is 1-5 with a 10.36 ERA as a starter against the A's. He allowed 19 runs, 23 hits - six homers - and walked nine in 14 2-3 innings in losing all three starts versus Oakland in 2012.
Though the A's took two of three at Yankee Stadium over the weekend, they've totaled 16 runs while losing four of six since scoring 29 during a three-game winning streak. John Jaso had two hits Tuesday for Oakland, which did not have a runner reach second base.
Yoenis Cespedes was thrown out trying to steal second with one out in the ninth. Brandon Moss struck out on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
"You've got to try it," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "Cespedes had to take that chance. If I didn't want him to go, I'd have put a red light on him."
Shortstop Jed Lowrie went hitless in three at-bats, and is 5 for 33 in eight games to see his average drop from .360 to .303.
He's 0 for 5 versus Masterson.
Oakland hopes for another strong effort from scheduled starter A.J. Griffin (3-2, 3.79), who allowed six hits and walked one in seven innings of a 2-0 win at Yankee Stadium on Friday.
"You expect him to have a good start all the time based on what we've seen since we called him up last year," Melvin said about the free-spirit Griffin, who serenaded his teammates in the clubhouse in English, Spanish and French while playing the guitar prior to that contest.
This will be the right-hander's first appearance against the Indians.
The A's are without outfielder Josh Reddick, who received a cortisone shot before the game on his sore right wrist after an MRI revealed inflammation in the joint. He is batting .129 (4 for 31) in his last 12 games.
"The last few days have been pretty rough and I've been having a lot of trouble," Reddick said. "I don't want to be a guy rotting on the bench, taking up a roster spot and not helping this team. We'll sit out here, maybe (the next series in) Seattle, or even take a trip to the disabled list."
Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis had two hits Tuesday, and is batting .314 (11 for 35) in his last eight games.
