KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: HITTING: Despite his decline from mediocrity into downright counter-productivity, SS DEREK JETER gets to hit atop the best lineup in baseball. Off an MVP-caliber season, OF CURTIS GRANDERSON is a true star. His average is mediocre, but his power is elite and the Yankees are letting him run when on base. After two years with a sub-.260 average, 1B MARK TEIXEIRA's talent seems to be fading. He still puts up huge power numbers playing in a bandbox. Coming off knee and thumb injuries, 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ is a serious injury risk hitting in the middle of this lineup. 2B ROBINSON CANO will once again see as many RBI chances as anyone. He's been great in those situations the past two seasons. OFs NICK SWISHER and BRETT GARDNER offer power and SBs, respectively, though the Yankees may look to upgrade if they continue to post lackluster numbers. C RUSSELL MARTIN will get plenty of playing time now that Jesus Montero is in Seattle. Veteran slugger RAUL IBANEZ is the new DH in town, and will love hitting towards the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium.
STARTING PITCHING: CC SABATHIA struggled late last year and has logged a ridiculous number of innings over the past five years. He's a top-10 starter in the majors, but is starting to pass his prime. Newcomers HIROKI KURODA and MICHAEL PINEDA will both stabilize what was a shaky rotation last year. Kuroda, 37, posted a 3.07 ERA with the Dodgers and the 23-year-old Pineda has unlimited upside, fanning 173 batters in 171 innings with Seattle last season. IVAN NOVA benefitted from nearly nine runs of support per game. He keeps the ball down often enough to thrive in the Bronx, just without many strikeouts. PHIL HUGHES' stuff has regressed greatly since his days as a top prospect. He's trying to overcome conditioning problems this offseason. MANNY BANUELOS and DELLIN BETANCES are great prospects who may get a chance to start MLB games later this season.
RELIEF PITCHING: Trust MARIANO RIVERA to stay dominant until proven wrong. He was better in 2011 than he was in 2010 despite some velocity slippage. DAVID ROBERTSON has a firm hold on eighth-inning duties after an All-Star season. He's second in line for saves. RAFAEL SORIANO wasn't a total bust, as he did just fine after a rough April. He's settled into the seventh-inning role since Robertson is more trusted that he is. After Tommy John surgery, JOBA CHAMBERLAIN is aiming to be back this June. Middle reliever CORY WADE was reliable last year, and has a chance to rack up some vulture wins if he keeps going strong.
CLEVELAND: HITTING: SS ASDRUBAL CABRERA's reinvented swing, modeled after Ben Zobrist, likely led to his power surge. OF GRADY SIZEMORE is back on a one-year deal, so he has plenty of financial incentive to stay healthy. But he will begin the season on the DL after back surgery. OF SHELLEY DUNCAN is expected to get more playing time in replacing Sizemore, but speedy OF EZEQUIEL CARRERA is also waiting for his shot. Injuries and off-the-field issues spoiled OF SHIN SOO-CHOO's 2011, but there's a good chance he bounces back . . . OF MICHAEL BRANTLEY does everything well enough to get a regular gig in center. C CARLOS SANTANA is developing into a middle-of-the-order run producer. DH TRAVIS HAFNER can't be trusted to stay healthy or to produce power numbers. After another down year, 1B MATT LaPORTA will have to sit and watch CASEY KOTCHMAN start at first more often than not. 3B LONNIE CHISENHALL will get his chance to play every day, but dwindling production the past two years is a concern. 2B JASON KIPNIS will get first crack at second base. He's got nice pop for a middle infielder.
STARTING PITCHING: JUSTIN MASTERSON's strikeout rate continues to decline, and he still gets hit hard by lefties. Still, his strong groundball rate guarantees he's a solid middle-of-the-rotation arm at worst. His velocity dropped last year, and there's no telling if UBALDO JIMENEZ will ever regain his early 2010 form. He's the definition of high-risk, high-reward. DEREK LOWE was a decent middle-of-the-rotation arm in the National League, but now he must adjust to facing superior A.L. lineups . . . Healthy again, JOSH TOMLIN will remain in the rotation. He's hittable, throwing strikes and relying on his defense. Former Twins hurler KEVIN SLOWEY rounds out the staff. Although he posted a 6.67 ERA last year, Slowey has exhibited pinpoint control in his career with just 84 walks in 532.2 innings, tallying a .470 K-to-BB ratio. JEANMAR GOMEZ is a decent minor league arm, but his ceiling is low (long term and in the immediate future). CARLOS CARRASCO may not pitch in the bigs this year after Tommy John surgery.
RELIEF PITCHING: CHRIS PEREZ is entrenched as the closer, but he was a bit of a disappointment last season. His velocity dropped slightly, and his strikeout rate fell off a cliff. If Perez gets hurt, VINNIE PESTANO is next in line for saves. He may be undersized, but his stuff is overpowering. TONY SIPP proved he can get out righties too, but his value is as a lefty-on-lefty guy. Ditto for sidearmer JOE SMITH, who is deadly on righties. But it would be a surprise if he shut down lefties for a second straight year. RAFAEL PEREZ has been hampered by shoulder soreness in Spring Training, but the lefty should once again be serviceable in the late innings this year.

*Yankees-Indians Preview* =========================

By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer

New York (1-4) at Cleveland (2-3), 4:05 p.m. EDT

Terry Francona spent eight seasons competing with the New York Yankees for AL East supremacy.

On Monday, the Cleveland Indians manager will face his former adversary in his new team's first home game.

As Boston's manager from 2004-11, Francona led the club to World Series crowns in 2004 and 2007. The '04 championship - the Red Sox's first in 86 years - came after defeating the Yankees in the AL championship series, where they became the first team to win a postseason series after being down 3-0.

Francona's focus now is helping the Indians make the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

Cleveland (3-3) made it back to .500 with a season-high 17 hits as it roughed up reigning AL Cy Young winner David Price in Sunday's 13-0 victory over Tampa Bay. The Indians had seven hits and were shut out in the first two games of the series.

"When you get this game figured out, let me know," Francona said.

The Indians will try to keep the momentum going as they open a season high-tying 10-game homestand with four against the Yankees.

Ubaldo Jimenez (0-0, 1.50 ERA) takes the hill in the opener looking to build on a solid season debut. The veteran right-hander struck out six in six innings of Wednesday's 3-2, 11-inning win over Toronto.

"I thought he was outstanding," Francona said of Jimenez, who had career worsts with 17 losses and a 5.40 ERA last season. "His secondary stuff, his direction to the plate was down. His offspeed, especially his changeup, was really good."

Jimenez, though, was 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts against New York last season - his first full year with Cleveland.

The Yankees (2-4), however, barely resemble last season's team with All-Stars Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson on the disabled list. They stumbled out of the gate before pounding out 13 hits in Sunday's 7-0 win over Detroit to avoid a three-game sweep.

Hiroki Kuroda (0-1, 13.50) is expected to get the ball, and an injury on his throwing hand is no longer a concern. The 38-year-old lasted just 1 1-3 innings - his shortest big league start - in Wednesday's 7-4 home loss to Boston after suffering a bruised right middle finger when he tried to grab a Shane Victorino liner. X-rays and a CT scan were negative.

"Against the lefties I was unable to make my pitches," Kuroda said through a translator after hitting two batters and giving up two runs. "I wasn't able to put my strength on the ball."

The right-hander, who went through a bullpen session Friday and threw more on Sunday, was 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA in two starts versus Cleveland last season.

Indians newcomers Michael Bourn and Mark Reynolds (homer) are both 5 for 26 off Kuroda. Bourn hit his first homer of the season Sunday, while Reynolds doubled his season home run total to four.

Reynolds has taken over at DH for Travis Hafner, who signed with the Yankees this past offseason after spending a decade with Cleveland. Hafner, eighth on the Indians' all-time home run list with 200, has hit safely in all six games with New York and is batting .350.

Former Yankee Nick Swisher is off to a much slower start with his new team, batting .182 (4 for 22) with one RBI. Swisher hit 105 homers and drove in 349 runs with New York from 2009-12.

The Yankees took five of six from the Indians last season, including two of three at Progressive Field from Aug. 24-26.
