Who's gone? OF Dexter Fowler, IF/OF Jorge Soler, LHP Aroldis Chapman, LHP Travis Wood, RHP Trevor Cahill, RHP Jason Hammel
Projected lineup: LF Kyle Schwarber (.000, 0 HR, 0 RBI in two games), 3B Kris Bryant (.292, 39, 102), 1B Anthony Rizzo (.292, 32, 109), 2B Ben Zobrist (.272, 18, 76), SS Addison Russell (.238, 21, 95), RF Jason Heyward (.230, 7, 49, 11 SB), C Willson Contreras (.282, 12, 35), CF Jon Jay (.291, 2, 26 with Padres) or Albert Almora (.277, 3, 14 in 47 games)
Rotation: LH Jon Lester (19-5, 2.44 ERA), RH Jake Arrieta (18-8, 3.10), RH Kyle Hendricks (16-8, 2.13), RH John Lackey (11-8, 3.35), LH Brett Anderson (1-2, 11.91 in four games with Dodgers) or LH Mike Montgomery (4-5, 2.52 with Mariners and Cubs) or RH Eddie Butler (2-5, 7.17 with Rockies) or LH Rob Zastryzny (1-0, 1.13 ERA in eight games) or RH Alec Mills (0-0, 13.50 in three games with Royals)
Key relievers: RH Wade Davis (2-1, 1.87, 27/30 SV with Royals), RH Pedro Strop (2-2, 2.85), RH Hector Rondon (2-3, 3.53, 18/23 SV), RH Koji Uehara (2-3, 3.45, 7/9 SV with Red Sox), RH Carl Edwards Jr. (0-1, 3.75), RH Justin Grimm (2-1, 4.10), LH Brian Duensing (1-0, 4.05 with Royals)
Hot spots: Fifth Starter. Of all the candidates vying to replace Hammel, who signed with Kansas City as a free agent, most have plenty of upside but didn't log many innings last year. That includes Anderson, who had one productive season and one unproductive season for the Dodgers. Keep an eye on southpaw Montgomery, who tossed two shutouts as a starter for the Mariners in 2015, came to the Cubs last year in a midseason trade, then was effective as a reliever. Last time he was on the mound, he recorded the save in Game 7 of the World Series.
Outlook: There hasn't been a back-to-back champion this century. For opponents of the Cubs, that might be the most tangible nugget of hope. Most of the key players return from a powerhouse team that played historically good defense, got no fewer than 165 innings from each of its top five starters, and featured a deep lineup led by NL MVP Kris Bryant. In the bullpen, two-time All-Star Davis is capable of replacing closer Chapman if he's healthy. Among the Cubs' regular position players, only Zobrist and new center fielder Jay are over 30 ' everyone else is either entering or in the midst of his prime. This is a strong outlook. | | CINCINNATI: 2016: 68-94, fifth place
Manager: Bryan Price (third season)
Who's new? RHP Scott Feldman, RHP Drew Storen, RHP Lisalverto Bonilla, OF Ryan Raburn, OF Desmond Jennings, IF/OF Arismendy Alcantara
Who's gone? 2B Brandon Phillips, C Ramon Cabrera, RHP Dan Straily, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, RHP Alfredo Simon, LHP John Lamb, RHP Josh Smith
Projected lineup: CF Billy Hamilton (.260, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 58 SB), SS Zack Cozart (.252, 16, 50), 1B Joey Votto (.326, 29, 97), LF Adam Duvall (.241, 33, 103), RF Scott Schebler (.265, 9, 40), 3B Eugenio Suarez (.248, 21, 70), C Devin Mesoraco (.140, 0, 1 in 16 games), 2B Jose Peraza (.324, 3, 25, 21 SB)
Rotation: RH Anthony DeSclafani (9-5, 3.28 ERA), RH Scott Feldman (7-4, 3.97 with Astros and Blue Jays), LH Brandon Finnegan (10-11, 3.98), RH Tim Adleman (4-4, 4.00), RH Robert Stephenson (2-3, 6.08) or Cody Reed (0-7, 7.36) or Amir Garrett (2-5, 3.46 for Triple-A Louisville)
Key relievers: RH Raisel Iglesias (3-2, 2.53, 6/8 SV), RH Drew Storen (3-0, 3.44 with Mariners), RH Michael Lorenzen (2-1, 2.88), LH Tony Cingrani (2-5, 4.14, 17/23 SV), RH Jumbo Diaz (1-1, 3.14), RH Blake Wood (6-5, 3.99)
Hot spot: Rotation. The Reds' rebuilding effort is just beginning to bear fruit on the mound. DeSclafani, 26, made a big leap in his second full season in 2016. Finnegan, 23, will try to do the same this year. If the next wave of pitchers isn't ready for the major leagues, Stephenson, Reed, Garrett, Sal Romano and Rookie Davis would make a mean rotation at Triple-A. Meanwhile, 40-year-old Bronson Arroyo will try to hold down a job like it's 2004.
Outlook: After trading Phillips to the Braves, only Votto and pitcher Homer Bailey remain from the Reds' last season as a contending team. Cincinnati was basically a .500 team (36-37) after the All-Star break last season, so maybe a return to respectability isn't far off. Hamilton and infielder Jose Peraza, electric on the bases and in the field, have breakout potential. There might not be another star on the roster besides Votto, but that's OK for now. With no veterans blocking their best prospects, the Reds can use this season to figure out what their system holds. |
| | Cubs' Lackey hopes to hold down Reds again
CINCINNATI -- Right-hander John Lackey will face the Cincinnati Reds for the second consecutive start on Tuesday when the Chicago Cubs open a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park. Lackey hopes to build off the success he had against Cincinnati on Wednesday when he did not allow a home run for the first time since July 25 and for just the fifth time in his 23 starts this season. That is no simple feat against the Reds, who feature five players with 20 or more home runs, tying a single-season franchise record set in 2008 and 1956. The Cubs (66-57) are leading the National League Central by a slim 2 1/2-game margin over the second-place Milwaukee Brewers heading into the Tuesday opener of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park. Manager Joe Maddon is doing everything he can to keep his players loose and help recapture some of the excitement and energy that propelled them to a World Series title last year. Last week was Maddon's signature "American Legion Week" when he allows players to show up at the ballpark much later than usual. "We're going to keep it rolling, absolutely," Maddon told MLB.com on Sunday before his team finished off a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays at Wrigley Field. "This time of the year, all the extra noise is not necessary. Batting practice, being on the field too early, showing up too soon -- it doesn't matter. Just be a person, show up, and then do your job, do your work, and you can work more intelligently." The Cubs and Reds split a four-game series at Wrigley Field last week. Chicago has won 26 of the past 35 games against the Reds (53-72), including eight of the past 11 series. Lackey (10-9, 4.67 ERA) will need to contend with Reds first baseman Joey Votto, who is been among the most consistent hitters in baseball, especially against the Cubs. Votto is batting .367 against Chicago with three homers, five doubles and 13 RBIs in 13 games. In 16 career starts against the Reds, Lackey owns a 6-5 record and 3.75 ERA. He got a no decision vs. Cincinnati on Wednesday after a run on four hits in six innings, leaving him 1-1 with a 4.67 ERA in three starts against the Reds this year. Cincinnati hopes to have shortstop Zack Cozart back in the lineup Tuesday after he missed games Saturday and Sunday due to a bruised left shin. He was hit by a pitch from Atlanta Braves reliever Rex Brothers on Friday. "He didn't respond as well as we hoped," Reds manager Bryan Price said Saturday. Reds right-hander Homer Bailey (4-6, 8.44 ERA) draws the start against the Cubs on Tuesday night. Bailey still is trying to find some consistency after coming back in June and missing most of the past two seasons following elbow and forearm surgeries. Bailey allowed six runs with five walks and a home run in 5 2/3 innings against the Cubs at Wrigley last Wednesday, his lone appearance against Chicago this year. He is 8-3 with a 4.66 ERA in 17 career starts vs. Chicago. Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant should be looking forward to a return visit to Great American Ball Park, where he is hitting .293 in his career with five home runs. He hit three homers and went 5-for-5 with six RBIs there on June 27, 2016. |
