| |  | SEATTLE: HITTING: C/DH JESUS MONTERO was brought over from the Yankees to hit in the heart of the order. At age 22, his offensive potential is scary. OF ICHIRO SUZUKI is entering the twilight of his career, but he might still have another .300 season left. 2B DUSTIN ACKLEY is the kind of line-drive hitter who fits well in Safeco, but he needs to catch up to MLB pitching. 1B JUSTIN SMOAK has disappointed, but he's making strides and has 30-HR upside. OF CASPER WELLS could play everyday. He won't hit for average, but has the power Seattle needs. MIKE CARP figures to at least grab early at-bats against righties. He'll strike out, but has lots of power. OF FRANKLIN GUTIERREZ is out for at least a month with a pectoral injury, but will reclaim his starting gig based on his defense. Seattle would love to see OF MICHAEL SAUNDERS step up to replace Gutierrez, but he's shown no signs of being able to handle MLB pitching. C MIGUEL OLIVO still has solid power, but he's an all-or-nothing hitter. 3B CHONE FIGGINS isn't quite done, but he's close. He'll have to battle line-drive hitting KYLE SEAGER for a job. SS BRENDAN RYAN will stick around for defense, but his bat is barely good enough for a regular gig.
STARTING PITCHING: FELIX HERNANDEZ had a touch of bad luck last year, but he's one of the few pitchers in baseball who's a lock for 200 strikeouts. JASON VARGAS just keeps throwing strikes and letting his defense make plays. He'll get by fine again in spacious Safeco. BLAKE BEAVAN doesn't have a strikeout pitch, but he'll make few mistakes and get some outs thanks to a strong defense. HECTOR NOESI, who also came over from New York with Montero, isn't a big strikeout pitcher, but has good control and is savvy enough to get his shot in Seattle's rotation this year. 37-year-old journeyman KEVIN MILLWOOD will fill out the fifth spot in the rotation after a solid spring. Top prospect DANNY HULTZEN could break into the bigs in 2012. The lefty has the polish of a big leaguer right now, though his ceiling is more good-not-great.
RELIEF PITCHING: Like many rebuilding teams, the Mariners will continue to shop their closer. BRANDON LEAGUE will pick up saves in Seattle, but he's more of a groundball pitcher than a strikeout artist. He'd likely be ticketed for a set-up role elsewhere. If League is traded, the closer role is wide open. SHAWN KELLEY came back from Tommy John surgery late last year and looked as good as ever. If he picks up where he left off last year, he'd be an obvious choice for ninth inning duties. CHANCE RUFFIN, part of the Doug Fister trade, has a strong minor-league track record. He could carve out a big role in this bullpen if he can improve his command. | | CINCINNATI: HITTING: 2B BRANDON PHILLIPS sparked the Reds offense after moving to the top of the order. But his free-swinging makes him a bad fit there. SS ZACK COZART played in only 11 games for the Reds before wrecking his non-throwing elbow, but it was still enough to convince the team they'd seen enough of PAUL JANISH in the starting role. 1B JOEY VOTTO keeps punishing pitchers. OF JAY BRUCE is in his gawky, teenage phase, but he's already emerged as a major power source. OF DREW STUBBS must cut down on his MLB-leading 206 strikeouts. He's out of the leadoff spot now, but those whiffs don't play well anywhere in the lineup. OF CHRIS HEISEY should get the starting nod in left now that Yonder Alonso is out of the picture. 3B SCOTT ROLEN is a permanent health question mark. His backup, JUAN FRANCISCO, swings for the fences. C DEVIN MESORACO is the most hyped catching prospect since Matt Wieters. RYAN HANIGAN will split squatting responsibilities with him.
STARTING PITCHING: Considered a source of strength entering the 2011 campaign, the Reds rotation directly caused their undoing. The first step toward a remedy was trading for MAT LATOS, who began 2011 slow and got stronger as the year went on. The 24-year-old threw at least six innings with 5+ K in 16 of his final 17 starts (2.94 ERA). But that was in a much more pitcher-friendly environment. He has a decent career road ERA (3.57), and Cincy will surely give him much better run support than he received in San Diego. Last year's pitching problems began with BRONSON ARROYO, who gave up more home runs in a season than any pitcher in this millennium. He allowed more HR (46) than walks (45). JOHNNY CUETO was the one big bright spot; he hasn't maintained the strikeout rates he flashed early in his career, but he's All-Star caliber. HOMER BAILEY was a disappointment, going 9-7 with a 4.43 ERA. MIKE LEAKE actually pitched pretty well after he got his first taste of the minors to get his mechanics worked out.
RELIEF PITCHING: With Francisco Cordero flying the coop, and newcomer RYAN MADSON lost for the season with Tommy John Surgery, Cincinnati will use a closer-by-committee approach. The Reds gave up three players, including starter Travis Wood, to acquire SEAN MARSHALL, who should fit in nicely as a set-up man who's tough on both right-and left-handed batters. AROLDIS CHAPMAN is listed as the main set-up man for Marshall, but he missed out on winter ball and could be too raw to trust in the ninth inning. LOGAN ONDRUSEK is also capable of being a decent closer, with a big fastball. |

Seattle (37-48) at Cincinnati (49-36), 7:10 p.m. EDT
The Cincinnati Reds' lowest winning percentage against any opponent is versus the Seattle Mariners as they get ready to welcome back a familiar face to Great American Ball Park.
Aaron Harang hasn't pitched in Cincinnati since leaving the team he spent the majority of his career with and faces a tough matchup opposite Mike Leake in Friday night's opener of a three-game set.
Cincinnati (49-36) is 1-8 all-time against Seattle (37-48), with the most notable connection between these franchises being the clubs Ken Griffey Jr. played the bulk of his career with.
A less notable connection from a Seattle standpoint is Harang (3-7, 5.08 ERA), who is in his first season with the Mariners but went 75-80 with a 4.28 ERA from 2003-10 for Cincinnati.
Harang won his first start against the Reds since leaving the club by allowing one run over seven innings last July 4 in a 4-1 victory for the Dodgers, but he has yet to return to Cincinnati.
"I like Harang," manager Dusty Baker told the Reds' official website. "Harang was a big part of us rebuilding this. I'm sure people will like seeing him. We haven't seen him (in Cincinnati) in a while."
The veteran right-hander is 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in five road starts.
Harang will be up against another righty born in San Diego in Leake (7-3, 2.52), who was scheduled to pitch Thursday against San Francisco before that contest was postponed due to rain.
Leake is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his last four outings, yielding four runs - one earned - over seven innings in Saturday's 6-4, 11-inning victory at Texas.
He has never faced Seattle, and is 2-0 with a 2.36 ERA in his last seven interleague starts.
The Reds have won three straight by yielding three runs over 26 innings in that span, including Homer Bailey's no-hitter Tuesday against the Giants.
Their offense continues to struggle, averaging 3.2 runs while batting .236 over the last 10 games. Their top four RBI leaders \2013 Brandon Phillips, Jay Bruce, Todd Frazier and Joey Votto - have combined for 16 in that stretch.
Seattle missed a chance at a three-game sweep in Texas with Thursday's 5-4 defeat. The Mariners blew a two-run lead in the seventh inning and fell despite a 14-8 advantage in hits after going 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position.
"We've got to do better with guys on base," said Raul Ibanez, who homered among a season-high four hits and three RBIs.
Ibanez is batting .381 with seven homers and 13 RBIs during a 10-game streak, although he is 2 for 9 against Leake.
Justin Smoak went 6 for 13 in the Rangers series.
Outfielder Michael Saunders hasn't started since a June 26 contest against Pittsburgh due to a finger injury, but he is expected to be in the lineup Friday.
"We'll get him back in there (Friday)," manager Eric Wedge told the Mariners' official website. "That's the plan right now."
