Manager: Bob Melvin (seventh season)
Who's new? CF Rajai Davis, OF Matt Joyce, 3B Trevor Plouffe, IF Adam Rosales, RHP Santiago Casilla
Who's gone? IF/OF Danny Valencia, OF Brett Eibner, 2B Eric Sogard, 2B Tyler Ladendorf, LHP Dillon Overton, RHP Fernando Rodriguez
Projected lineup: CF Rajai Davis (.249, 12 HR, 48 RBI, 43 SB with Indians), C Stephen Vogt (.251, 14, 56), DH Ryon Healy (.305, 13, 37 in 72 games), LF Khris Davis (.247, 42, 102), RF Matt Joyce (.242, 13, 42 with Pirates) or Mark Canha (.122, 3, 6 in 16 games), SS Marcus Semien (.238, 27, 75, 10 SB), 3B Trevor Plouffe (.260, 12, 47 with Twins), 1B Yonder Alonso (.253, 7, 56), 2B Jed Lowrie (.263, 2, 27 in 87 games)
Rotation: RH Kendall Graveman (10-11, 4.11), LH Sean Manaea (7-9, 3.86), RH Jharel Cotton (2-0, 2.15 in five games), RH Andrew Triggs (1-1, 4.31), RH Jesse Hahn (2-4, 6.02 in nine games) and Frankie Montas (0-0, 2.38 in four games at Triple-A)
Key relievers: RH Ryan Madson (6-7, 3.62, 30/37 SV), LH Sean Doolittle (2-3, 3.23), RH Santiago Casilla (2-5, 3.57 with Giants), RH Ryan Dull (5-5, 2.42), RH John Axford (6-4, 3.97), RH Liam Hendriks (0-4, 3.76), LH Daniel Coulombe (3-1, 4.53)
Hot spots: Fifth Starter and Second Base. Triggs, Hahn and Montas are the top candidates to fill out the rotation. Montas, who turns 24 before the season, is the youngest and has the highest ceiling. Hahn is the only one with something resembling a track record of success in the majors. Triggs showed potential in five starts last year. Second base will belong to prospect Franklin Barreto at some point. For now the position belongs to Lowrie, who figures to become trade bait as the A's begin their annual migration toward mathematical elimination.
Outlook: It's been a long two years since the A's played postseason baseball. Rather than rebuilding outright, the A's spent their offseason stocking up on veteran position players. Their strength is a young rotation led by right-hander Sonny Gray ' another trade candidate who's coming off the worst of his four major league seasons (5-11, 5.69 ERA) and will miss time with a lat strain. If Cotton, Manaea and Triggs pick up where they left off, pitching won't be the problem. No team scored fewer runs than the A's in 2016, and it still isn't obvious that their lineup improved. Their home turf will be renamed in honor of Rickey Henderson when the Angels visit Oakland for the opener; maybe Rickey can hit leadoff, too. | | CHI WHITE SOX: 2016: 78-84, fourth place.
Manager: Rick Renteria (first season).
He's Here: RHP Lucas Giolito, INF Yoan Moncada, LHP Derek Holland, RHP Reynaldo Lopez, C Geovany Soto, OF Peter Bourjos.
He's Outta Here: Manager Robin Ventura, LHP Chris Sale, OF Adam Eaton, OF Austin Jackson, DH Justin Morneau, C Alex Avila, RHP Matt Albers.
Projected lineup: CF Leury Garcia (.229, 1, 5 in 18 games, 48 ABs; .313, 6, 35, 18 SBs in 84 games at Triple-A Charlotte) or Jacob May (.266, 1, 24, 19 SBs in 83 games at Triple-A Charlotte), SS Tim Anderson (.283, 9, 30), LF Melky Cabrera (.296, 14, 86), 1B Jose Abreu (.293, 25, 100), 3B Todd Frazier (.225, 40, 98), RF Avisail Garcia (.245, 12, 51), DH Matt Davidson (missed much of last season with broken right foot), C Omar Narvaez (.267, 1, 10), 2B Tyler Saladino (.282, 8, 38).
Rotation: LH Jose Quintana (13-12, 3.20 ERA), RH Miguel Gonzalez (5-8, 3.73), LH Derek Holland (7-9, 4.95 ERA in 22 games with Texas), RH James Shields (6-19, 5.85 in 33 starts with Padres and White Sox), LH Carlos Rodon (9-10, 4.04).
Key relievers: RH David Robertson (5-3, 3.47, 37/44 saves), RH Nate Jones (5-3, 2.29, 3 saves), LH Dan Jennings (4-3, 2.08), RH Zach Putnam (1-0, 2.30), RH Michael Ynoa (1-0, 3.00).
Hot Spot: Triple-A Charlotte. With Giolito, Lopez and Moncada likely to begin the season in Triple-A, many White Sox fans might keep a closer watch on the Knights than the big league club. The development of the franchise's suddenly rich minor league system will help determine the trajectory of Chicago's new rebuilding project.
Outlook: Lots of losses and trades. Quintana and Frazier likely will be shipped out at some point this season, and Robertson also could be on the move in the right deal. The White Sox seem fully committed to a major overhaul, and they added several prospects when they traded away Sale and Eaton over the winter. But it could be a rough couple of years while general manager Rick Hahn tries to establish a more reliable pipeline of talent throughout the organization. In the meantime, the White Sox still have Anderson, who was impressive in his first major league stint last year. Abreu is going for his fourth straight season of at least 25 homers and 100 RBIs. |
| | White Sox try to rebound from shutout loss to A's
CHICAGO -- It would be fitting if the Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics played a two-hour game Saturday afternoon on "Mark Buehrle Day" at Guaranteed Rate Field. Buehrle, who was known for pitching quickly in games, will have his number 56 retired. "It doesn't really make sense, to be honest with you," Buehrle said of the honor at a press conference Friday. "I'm trying to wrap my head around it. Like I said, I watched Frank Thomas as a kid growing up and even when I came here and played with him, I couldn't believe it. I'm like a fan of Frank Thomas, who's right there. It just doesn't make sense that I'm up there with those guys. "Again, I went out there and tried to do what I could do every day and had fun with it and obviously had a good, long successful career. And now here we are getting my number retired. I can't really explain it. It's pretty hard." Buehrle, who retired following the 2015 season, was 161-119 with the White Sox and threw a perfect game and a no-hitter. He was a five-time All Star and won four Gold Gloves. "Tomorrow's honor, I'm sure he'll greatly appreciate it," said White Sox manager Rick Renteria. "He's so humble. He'll probably make light of it. It's nice to have somebody come back like that and for all of us to be a part of it, to see something like it." The White Sox (32-40) will look to bounce back after losing their fourth game in five outings, falling 3-0 on Friday night to the A's (32-42). Khris Davis' two-run home run in the first inning and Jharel Cotton's five shutout innings paced the A's, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Matt Joyce added a solo home run. White Sox third baseman Matt Davidson almost provided heroics for the White Sox in the ninth with two men on, but his shot to center field wasn't deep enough, as Jaycob Brugman hauled it in to give the A's their second shutout victory of the season. Right-handed White Sox veteran James Shields (1-0, 2.42 ERA) will make his second start since returning from a two-month stint on the disabled list. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings in Toronto on Sunday in a no-decision. In 16 career starts against the A's, Shields is 6-5 with a 4.15 ERA. Last Aug. 19, the A's roughed Shields up for six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Davis and Yonder Alonso went deep off Shields in a 9-0 A's win. Shields is 49-39 with a 3.65 ERA in his career in day games. Rookie Daniel Gossett (0-2, 7.20 ERA) will make his third career start for the A's. The right-hander allowed only two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings in a 4-1 loss to the Astros on Monday. He struck out six and walked none on 100 pitches. |
