KEY GAME INFORMATION
TAMPA BAY: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - A year after being a trendy preseason pick to contend for the World Series, the Tampa Bay Rays are back in a familiar role as underdogs.
''That's good. ... We like that,'' three-time All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria said, noting the team has a history of flourishing most when little is expected from outside the organization.
''I just think it's going to be a really good year,'' the club's career home run and RBIs leader said. ''We've got a young team, a bunch of guys eager to learn and get out there and win games. I'm really looking forward to that.''
Former manager Joe Maddon - and his often unconventional way of doing things - is gone.
So is Andrew Friedman, the young executive who was architect of the teams that made the playoffs four of the past seven seasons.
The roster has a much different look, too, with 10 key players from a year ago either traded or released this winter.
''The end result is a club that we have optimism about, a club that we're excited about, that we think can compete for a playoff spot. And, that's what we want,'' team president of baseball operations Matt Silverman said.
''Every year, we want to come into camp believing our team can play meaningful games in September and have a chance to go to the playoffs, and even beyond,'' Silverman added. ''We have that - and at the same time, we've reloaded our minor league system, added some players who impact us this year, might impact us in the future, and we're better off because of that.''
Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, catcher Rene Rivera, outfielder Steven Souza Jr., and pitchers Kevin Jepsen, Ernesto Frieri and Burch Smith are offseason acquisitions who could figure in the team's success - or failure.
Smith and two other young starters - Matt Andriese and Nathan Karns - figure to begin the season in the rotation because of injuries to Alex Cobb, Drew Smyly, and Matt Moore.
The hope is the rest of the projected rotation, Chris Archer and Jake Odorizzi, can help the Rays stay afloat until they can get back to full strength.
''If you've got starting pitching, you've got a leg up on going into the season,'' rookie manager Kevin Cash said. ''We're very fortunate with the pitchers we have - starters and relievers.''
Cobb, sidelined by a forearm strain during spring training, believes the team will thrive as underdogs.
''We're not going to get bullied. A lot of people are picking us at the bottom, and we're going to embrace that and have each other's backs,'' the right-hander said.
''Any time anybody calls you out in your profession and makes you feel like you're not as good as you know you are, there's always something to prove,'' Cobb said. ''I don't feel like we need to have extra motivation. It's just going to be that much sweeter when we go out there and perform well.''
A look at the keys to the Rays' season:
WHO WILL LEAD?: Pitching and defense were staples during six consecutive winning seasons that produced four playoff berths and one trip to the World Series. The Rays slipped to 77-85 a year ago, their first losing record since 2007. They're banking on Cash, who has no previous managerial experience, being the right fit to restore winning ways. At 37, he's the youngest current manager or head coach in the four major professional sports.
BETTER LONGO: Longoria played in every game in 2014 for the first time in his career, however he hit a disappointing .253 with 22 homers and 91 RBIs. He's moving into the cleanup spot after batting third most of his career, and knows he has to be more consistent if the Rays - last in the AL in runs scored a year ago - are going to have a chance to be better offensively.
BEHIND THE PLATE: Catcher Ryan Hanigan was traded and backup Jose Molina was released this winter. The three-team deal that sent Wil Myers to San Diego and brought Souza to Tampa Bay from Washington, also landed Rivera from the Padres.
The Rays believe he's an upgrade defensively, as well as offensively.
Rivera posted career highs with a .252 batting average, 11 homers and 44 RBI's in 103 games last season. Still, the 31-year-old catcher stresses his job is to provide solid direction behind the plate.
''I want to help my pitching staff first. I think that's what the game is all about. If you pitch well, you're going to win some games,'' Rivera said. ''If I get a hit here, a hit there and help us win some games, that's even better.''
CHI WHITE SOX: CHICAGO (AP) - A decade removed from their most recent championship, the Chicago White Sox once again are eyeing a big season.
Their sights are set on an AL Central title after consecutive losing records, maybe even more. The White Sox added to their offense, boosted their rotation, overhauled their bullpen and sent expectations soaring.
''Obviously postseason first, and World Series,'' new closer David Robertson said. ''I mean that's what I look forward to every year. That's where I want to be.''
The addition of Robertson to the bullpen is among the reasons the White Sox believe they are armed and ready after going 73-89. But it's not the only one.
They added All-Star Jeff Samardzija to a rotation that already included ace Chris Sale. They added free agent Adam LaRoche to their lineup, giving AL Rookie of the Year Jose Abreu more protection, and brought in Melky Cabrera to solidify the No. 2 spot in the order behind Adam Eaton.
Is that enough to compete with Cleveland, Kansas City and Detroit in the division and make a run in the playoffs? The White Sox believe it is. Their fans are pumped, too.
With that in mind, here are some things to look for this season:
LINED UP: It would be hard for Abreu to match, let alone exceed, what he did last season. He batted .317 with 36 homers and 107 RBIs, one year after defecting from Cuba. While the White Sox tied for fourth in the AL in homers, they were just eighth in runs, ninth in batting average and 12th in on-base percentage.
LaRoche, who signed a $25 million, two-year contract, should give them power from the left side. He hit 26 homers and drove in 92 runs for Washington last season. Cabrera, a .301 hitter with Toronto, helps the top of the order.
''I think we're jelling together as a team. Hopefully that translates to wins in April,'' Eaton said.
SALE-ING ALONG: With Sale, Samardzija and Jose Quintana, the White Sox appear strong at the top of the rotation.
Sale made the AL All-Star team for the third time last season while going 12-4 with a 2.17 ERA with 208 strikeouts and 39 walks. Samardzija, acquired from Oakland, moves into the No. 2 spot. With Sale recovering from a broken foot, Samardzija - who grew up a White Sox fan - could wind up starting the opener at Kansas City after pitching the previous two for the Cubs.
CLOSING TIME: Chicago tied for seventh in the majors with 21 blown saves and had the fourth-lowest save percentage (63.2) last season. Robertson, who took over as closer after Mariano Rivera retired, saved 39 games for the New York Yankees last season. Chicago also brought in Zach Duke.
RODON WATCH: Whether he starts the season in the rotation or gets sent down to the minors, expect to see top prospect Carlos Rodon in a White Sox uniform at some point this season. The No. 3 pick in last year's amateur draft, he is on a fast track to the majors after three standout seasons at North Carolina State. Rodon, who made nine minor league appearances in 2014, could start the year in the rotation. If Rodon starts in the minors, veteran Brad Penny could make some early starts.

*Rays-White Sox Preview* ========================

Tampa Bay (53-54) at Chicago (50-54), 8:10 p.m. EDT

While Chicago is known as the Windy City, the breeze on the South Side on Tuesday night figures to be coming from major league hitters.

Chris Sale and Chris Archer lead the AL in strikeouts per nine innings, and these nine-game winners figure to present major problems for the lineups of the Tampa Bay Rays and White Sox in the middle game of this series.

Chicago (50-54) and Tampa Bay (53-54) are fighting to stay in the tightly-packed AL wild-card race and their hitters figure to be fighting just to make contact in this contest. Sale (9-6, 3.20 ERA) averages 11.57 strikeouts per nine innings and Archer (9-8, 2.54) averages 10.99.

"You're going to see two elite pitchers from the American League," Rays manager Kevin Cash told MLB's official website. "Two very special pitchers, both do it with big fastballs. Big breaking balls. So it should be a really good matchup."

Sale has an AL-best 177 strikeouts and Archer is third with 173. Of the 35 games in the AL in which a pitcher has struck out 10 or more, Sale has 10 of them and Archer six.

"When I'm out there pitching, I'm not thinking about strikeouts," Archer said. "And neither is Chris Sale. When you get to two strikes and the opportunity presents itself, you make a pitch and go for it if you can."

These starters turned in vastly different performances in their previous outings.

Sale was charged with seven runs over five-plus innings Thursday as Chicago's seven-game win streak ended with an 8-2 loss at Boston. His ERA was 2.41 over his five previous outings.

One day earlier, Archer retired the first 19 Detroit hitters in Tampa Bay's longest bid for a perfect game before he was charged with two runs while striking out 11 in seven innings of a 2-1 defeat.

Archer is 0-4 with a 3.96 ERA in his last six outings and 1-0 with a 3.26 ERA in three career starts versus the White Sox. Jose Abreu is 5 for 9 with a homer against him, while Melky Cabrera is 5 for 20.

Sale is 2-3 with a 3.45 ERA in five starts versus the Rays with 50 strikeouts in 31 1-3 innings. Evan Longoria is 1 for 11 with six strikeouts in the matchup.

Tampa Bay improved to a major league-best 19-11 when facing lefty starters with Monday's 5-4 victory. Mikie Mahtook's RBI single in the ninth inning was the difference.

Chicago has lost four of five after rallying to tie the game in the sixth inning on Abreu's two-run homer and erasing a one-run deficit to take the lead in the seventh.

"We didn't get it done tonight but we still fought back and had a chance," manager Robin Ventura said.

Abreu went 2 for 3 and extended his hitting streak to 14 games, a run in which he is batting .385 with five homers and 18 RBIs. Adam Eaton was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts to snap an 11-game hitting streak on which he batted .455.

The White Sox may debut outfielder Trayce Thompson, who was recalled Monday from Triple-A Charlotte and is the brother of Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson.
