| |  | NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is gone, the final remaining link to the New York Yankees' last dynasty. He left behind a team in transition, that failed to make the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time in a generation and is beset with an older core coming off injuries.
Alex Rodriguez's return from a season-long drug suspension is the most interesting aspect of the Yankees, who enter the season with a health-challenged rotation, rebuilt bullpen and lineup that was among the least potent in the American League last year.
''I think we've added a lot of good young arms,'' manager Joe Girardi said. ''Added some good young players, as well. I think we've really seen an improvement in our young minor league players and the impact they are capable of having. I think we will continue to see that for years to come.''
If the Yankees founder, young players could be given more of a chance. Top prospects include pitcher Luis Severino, infielders Jose Pirela and Rob Refsnyder, and outfielder Aaron Judge.
But first, many of the old, beaten-up players will be given a chance to show they have something left.
Left fielder Brett Gardner (abdomen) and right fielder Carlos Beltran (elbow) return from surgery, and Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) missed a significant stretch of spring training. First baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist) hit .216 last year, 143rd among 148 major league qualifiers in his return from an injury that sidelined him for most of 2013.
After signing a big-money deal with the Yankees, catcher Brian McCann was hitting just .209 in May before improving in the second half to finish at .232. Third baseman Chase Headley, acquired from San Diego in July, was given a new contract by the Yankees because they have no confidence in A-Rod's ability to play the field. New York also re-signed Stephen Drew under the theory he can't be as bad as he was in 2014.
Didi Gregorius, obtained from Arizona in a trade, is the primary offensive newcomer and replaces Jeter at shortstop. Left-handed-hitting Garrett Jones hopes to earn at-bats.
''Jeter is still Jeter. Everything that everybody is going to talk about is Jeter,'' Gregorius said. ''But for me - I'm learning and I'm there just to play the game, so just trying to focus on the game and trying to win every game, that's all I can say, not worrying about what's going on around.''
LIGHTNING ROD: The three-time AL MVP, who turns 40 on July 27, has not played a full season since 2007 because the suspension, operations on both hips and other injuries. New York owes him $61 million over the final three seasons of his contract, so he will be given a chance to earn at-bats as a DH, especially against left-handed starters.
RICKETY ROTATION: Masahiro Tanaka missed 2 1/2 months in his first season because of a small elbow ligament tear the Yankees say didn't need surgery. CC Sabathia, limited to eight starts last year, has to show he can pitch effectively with reduced velocity. Michael Pineda, back from shoulder surgery, had a 1.89 ERA in 13 starts last year but missed a long stretch because of the shoulder. New York hopes hard-throwing Nathan Eovaldi can learn to be effective after his acquisition from Miami. With Chris Capuano on the DL and Ivan Nova not expected back from Tommy John surgery until May or June, Adam Warren was the leading contender for fifth starter.
BULLPEN: A strong point last year, the Yankees rebuilt the `pen. David Robertson was allowed to leave for the Chicago White Sox, and David Phelps, Shawn Kelley and Shane Greene were traded. Lefty Andrew Miller and Scott Baker were signed, and Justin Wilson and Chris Martin acquired in trades. Miller and Dellin Betances competed in spring training to replace Robertson as closer.
HOPS: The Yankees are sharing their ballpark with Major League Soccer's expansion New York City team, and Teixeira complained before the soccer team's home opener that the infield would get torn up, leading to bad hops. | | CHI WHITE SOX: CHICAGO (AP) - A decade removed from their most recent championship, the Chicago White Sox once again are eyeing a big season.
Their sights are set on an AL Central title after consecutive losing records, maybe even more. The White Sox added to their offense, boosted their rotation, overhauled their bullpen and sent expectations soaring.
''Obviously postseason first, and World Series,'' new closer David Robertson said. ''I mean that's what I look forward to every year. That's where I want to be.''
The addition of Robertson to the bullpen is among the reasons the White Sox believe they are armed and ready after going 73-89. But it's not the only one.
They added All-Star Jeff Samardzija to a rotation that already included ace Chris Sale. They added free agent Adam LaRoche to their lineup, giving AL Rookie of the Year Jose Abreu more protection, and brought in Melky Cabrera to solidify the No. 2 spot in the order behind Adam Eaton.
Is that enough to compete with Cleveland, Kansas City and Detroit in the division and make a run in the playoffs? The White Sox believe it is. Their fans are pumped, too.
With that in mind, here are some things to look for this season:
LINED UP: It would be hard for Abreu to match, let alone exceed, what he did last season. He batted .317 with 36 homers and 107 RBIs, one year after defecting from Cuba. While the White Sox tied for fourth in the AL in homers, they were just eighth in runs, ninth in batting average and 12th in on-base percentage.
LaRoche, who signed a $25 million, two-year contract, should give them power from the left side. He hit 26 homers and drove in 92 runs for Washington last season. Cabrera, a .301 hitter with Toronto, helps the top of the order.
''I think we're jelling together as a team. Hopefully that translates to wins in April,'' Eaton said.
SALE-ING ALONG: With Sale, Samardzija and Jose Quintana, the White Sox appear strong at the top of the rotation.
Sale made the AL All-Star team for the third time last season while going 12-4 with a 2.17 ERA with 208 strikeouts and 39 walks. Samardzija, acquired from Oakland, moves into the No. 2 spot. With Sale recovering from a broken foot, Samardzija - who grew up a White Sox fan - could wind up starting the opener at Kansas City after pitching the previous two for the Cubs.
CLOSING TIME: Chicago tied for seventh in the majors with 21 blown saves and had the fourth-lowest save percentage (63.2) last season. Robertson, who took over as closer after Mariano Rivera retired, saved 39 games for the New York Yankees last season. Chicago also brought in Zach Duke.
RODON WATCH: Whether he starts the season in the rotation or gets sent down to the minors, expect to see top prospect Carlos Rodon in a White Sox uniform at some point this season. The No. 3 pick in last year's amateur draft, he is on a fast track to the majors after three standout seasons at North Carolina State. Rodon, who made nine minor league appearances in 2014, could start the year in the rotation. If Rodon starts in the minors, veteran Brad Penny could make some early starts. |

Melky Cabrera is enjoying a sizzling 10-game stretch that New York Yankees starter Ivan Nova doesn't figure to be likely to slow down.
Cabrera has dominated Nova in past matchups and will try to help the White Sox capture a third straight series Sunday in Chicago.
The left fielder has been a major catalyst to this 8-2 stretch for Chicago (50-52), going 21 for 42 with three homers, 15 RBIs, 12 runs and a 1.486 OPS. His three-run homer keyed Saturday's 8-2 victory that evened this three-game set.
"He's been hot," manager Robin Ventura said. "He's been in the middle of a lot of it."
Cabrera is 6 for 9 with two homers, a double and a walk against Nova (3-3, 3.38 ERA) for his highest average versus any pitcher against which he has at least 10 plate appearances. These two haven't faced each other since 2013 with Nova missing most of last year after right elbow surgery.
Nova is 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA in five career starts against the White Sox. He has faced Alexei Ramirez the most among Chicago hitters, with the shortstop going 3 for 14.
The right-hander has yielded four runs over 11 innings in earning consecutive victories. His last streak of three in a row was a five-start run in 2012.
He'll try to help avoid an early call to the bullpen after Yankees relievers had to log 25 1-3 innings in six games this week, including 7 1-3 innings in this series while yielding seven runs. Spot starter Bryan Mitchell was charged with four runs Saturday and gave up a homer to Ramirez.
"Some of the other guys didn't throw (Saturday) so we should be fine," manager Joe Girardi said.
Chicago will start someone whom many believed wouldn't be on the team anymore in Jeff Samardzija (8-5, 3.94), who was the subject of trade rumors.
"You go out and do your job every fifth day, and those things you can't control you don't worry about it," he told MLB's official website. "So nothing changes for me."
The right-hander seeks his first career three-start win streak after pitching eight effective innings in wins at Cleveland on July 23 and Boston five days later. He was staked to five-run leads both times.
Samardzija pitched seven scoreless innings versus the Yankees (58-45) in his lone start against them for the Chicago Cubs last May 21. Carlos Beltran is 5 for 14 with a homer against him and Chase Headley is 4 for 11.
Beltran is expected back in the lineup after sitting out Saturday with a sore left foot. Girardi also plans to give catcher Brian McCann, who homered off the bench, his first start in this series.
The White Sox successfully cooled off Mark Teixeira, limiting the slugger to three hitless at-bats with a walk. Teixeira entered off consecutive two-homer efforts; his woes were part of an 0-for-16 showing with eight strikeouts for the top five hitters in the Yankees batting order.
Chicago's Jose Abreu is batting .378 with four homers and 16 RBIs in a 12-game hitting streak as he gets ready for his first look at Nova.
These teams have the AL's best records since June 30, with Chicago 19-10 and New York 17-10.
