| |  | ATLANTA: HITTING: The Braves were 27th in the majors in steals last year, but that number should rise with a full season of speedster OF MICHAEL BOURN, who was acquired from Houston last July. OFs MARTIN PRADO and JASON HEYWARD comprise the corner outfield spots, and are both are looking to bounce back after disappointing, injury-riddled 2011 campaigns. 2B DAN UGGLA smacked a career-best 36 HR in his first year with Atlanta, his fifth straight 30-homer season. Steady veterans C BRIAN McCANN and 3B CHIPPER JONES comprise a solid middle of the lineup. McCann has four straight 20-HR, 70-RBI seasons, while Jones, who turns 40 in April, has a career .402 on-base percentage. 1B FREDDIE FREEMAN was the N.L.'s best offensive rookie last year, batting .282 with 21 HR and 76 RBI. The starting shortstop will be one of two highly-touted, 22-year-old prospects, TYLER PASTORNICKY or ANDRELTON SIMMONS.
STARTING PITCHING: Even with significant injuries to three starters, the Braves rotation still ranked ninth in the majors in ERA (3.73), thanks to TIM HUDSON posting a 3.22 ERA in 215 innings. The right-hander was lights-out at Turner Field again, going 10-4 with a 2.31 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. But he'll be out at least a month because of back problems. JAIR JURRJENS was outstanding through the end of July (12-3, 2.38 ERA), but a knee strain bothered him in August and shut him down for September. Although many teams inquired about Jurrjens in the offseason, it doesn't look like the Braves want to deal him just yet. TOMMY HANSON is another young star (25) that had to be shut down in early August due to a partially torn rotator cuff. His ERA was a career-worst 3.60, but he notched a career-best 9.8 K/9 rate. BRANDON BEACHY, also 25, posted a whopping 10.7 K/9 ratio with a respectable ERA (3.68) and WHIP (1.21). Atlanta is loaded with young pitchers, but expect MIKE MINOR (5-3, 4.14 ERA) and RANDALL DELGADO to start in the majors, with JULIO TEHERAN, who has the most upside of the trio, to begin 2012 in Triple-A.
RELIEF PITCHING: CRAIG KIMBREL exceeded all expectations last year, establishing himself as one of the best closers in the game. He struck out an eye-popping 14.8 batters per nine (127 K in 77 IP), and converted 46-of-54 (85%) save chances. Even though Kimbrel's job as a closer is probably locked down for the next decade, the Braves have two other great relievers, both lefties. JONNY VENTERS posted a 1.84 WHIP and .176 opponents' BA in 88 innings, and is next in line for saves (five in 2011) should Kimbrel suffer an injury. Fellow southpaw ERIC O'FLAHERTY had a 0.98 ERA (8 ER in 73.2 IP) and 32 holds, just three fewer than Venters. | | CHI WHITE SOX: HITTING: The departure of Juan Pierre opens things up for SS ALEXEI RAMIREZ to hit leadoff. 2B GORDON BECKHAM will get a fresh start, but his leash is shortening. 1B PAUL KONERKO faded last year. He's potential trade bait for the rebuilding Sox. Did DH ADAM DUNN need a year to adjust to A.L. pitching and DHing? With his contract, the Sox will have to find out. OF ALEJANDRO DE AZA's late-season surge probably wasn't for real, but it was enough to get him the inside track on a starting job with Carlos Quentin having been dealt to the Padres on New Year's Eve. OF ALEX RIOS has bounced back before, but at his age the odds are longer now. The organization believes in OF DAYAN VICIEDO. His improving approach and power fit well in U.S. Cellular, but he could platoon with KOSUKE FUKUDOME in left field. C A.J. PIERZYNSKI has motivation for one more solid season as free agency looms. 3B BRENT MOREL is good glove, but has a limited stick. OF/1B BRENT LILLIBRIDGE has an improving bat and can play just about anywhere.
STARTING PITCHING: JOHN DANKS doesn't look like a true No. 1 starter, but he keeps consistently throwing strikes and has some swing-and-miss stuff. Maybe it's because he's fallen short of his once-elite prospect status, but GAVIN FLOYD seems to get no respect as a quality middle-of-the-rotation arm. He was especially good after adding a cutter/slider-type pitch last year. JAKE PEAVY isn't going to win another Cy Young, but unlike last year, his shoulder should be close to 100 percent. The big question will again be whether, as a flyball pitcher, he can keep the ball in the park at cozy U.S. Cellular. PHILIP HUMBER was a nice surprise in 2011, but don't be fooled. It wasn't a former top prospect finally figuring it out. It was a back-of-the-rotation arm getting some good breaks. CHRIS SALE will make the move to the rotation. He'll likely be on some pitch counts, but this is an exciting development. With his stuff (he already has a solid changeup to go with his fastball/slider combo) he has monster upside.
RELIEF PITCHING: With closer Sergio Santos shipped off to Toronto, youngster ADDISON REED figures to be the top candidate to close games. Any young closer is a risk, but Reed's fastball/slider combo has been dominant over two pro seasons. Lefty MATT THORNTON might have blown his chance to claim the closer role last year. He had regained his form as a top set-up man late in the year, but if Reed falters he might be no more than a committee guy. JESSE CRAIN chased strikeouts more aggressively last year, but he also issued more walks. He may miss the first couple weeks of the season with an oblique injury. |

While the Atlanta Braves entered the All-Star break with several injury concerns, they are hoping to have three of their top players back when the second half gets underway.
Justin Upton, Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman could return Friday night when the visiting Braves open a three-game set against the last-place Chicago White Sox.
With Justin Upton (strained calf), B.J. Upton (strained adductor muscle), Heyward (strained hamstring) and Freeman (jammed thumb) sidelined, Atlanta's lineup appeared almost unrecognizable Sunday in an 8-4 loss to Cincinnati.
B.J. Upton was placed on the disabled list before that game, but the other three could be available Friday.
"Right now, anybody that kind of flinches a little bit or grabs something, you start getting scared," manager Fredi Gonzalez told MLB's official website. "The All-Star break, hopefully these four days, we get some guys healthy and start back against the White Sox, start going again.
"You feel good any time your back's up against it like we were, and the other guys respond. I think the best is still ahead of us, offensively."
Leading the NL with 114 homers, the Braves (54-41) own a six-game lead in the NL East.
"Once you get comfortable, that lead's going to be gone or you're going to be shipped somewhere else," second baseman Dan Uggla said. "We're definitely not satisfied. But right now, looking back, we're happy with where we are."
The White Sox (37-55), in contrast, haven't seen much go their way. Chicago has gone a major league-worst 13-31 since May 27 and finds itself 14 games behind AL Central-leading Detroit.
"Not good," manager Robin Ventura said of his team's first half. "The record speaks for itself. Nobody is happy. These will be a good four days for these guys. Just go home and do whatever they are going to do and then come back ready to go. You can go home and clear your mind."
After dropping 13 of 18 before the break, the White Sox will try to bounce back behind John Danks (2-6, 4.31 ERA). The left-hander has recorded four straight quality starts while posting a 2.93 ERA.
"I think I'm on the right track now," he said after allowing three runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 5-4, 11-inning win at Philadelphia on Saturday. "I'll be disappointed if it doesn't go right."
Danks yielded three runs in seven innings to beat Atlanta 9-6 on June 22, 2010, in his only appearance in the series.
The Braves will give the ball to Tim Hudson (6-7, 4.02), who has gone 2-3 in his last eight starts despite a 2.48 ERA. The right-hander, though, is looking to win a season-high third consecutive outing after surrendering four runs - three earned - in seven innings of a 6-5 victory over Cincinnati last Thursday.
He's received 17 runs of support in his last two starts.
"Obviously when you get a lead, it's a lot easier to go up there and try to execute pitches and be more aggressive in the strike zone," Hudson said.
Hudson, 2-7 with a 5.19 ERA on the road, has gone 0-3 in four career starts at U.S. Cellular Field while posting a 10.45 ERA - by far his highest mark in any stadium. He hasn't faced the White Sox since 2010.
He's struggled against Adam Dunn, who is 11 for 31 (.355) with four homers in their matchups. Jeff Keppinger has also given him trouble, going 9 for 17.
The White Sox have outscored the Braves 35-19 during a five-game winning streak in the series dating to 2004.
