| | | MIAMI: HITTING: Ozzie Guillen takes over as manager for the newly named Miami Marlins, who will open their new retractable-roof Marlins Ballpark in 2012. Indoor games could generate more offense, but the fences are pretty deep (340' to left, 384' to 392' power alleys, 416' center and 335' right). New SS JOSE REYES led the NL with a .337 average and posted a career-best .384 OBP. Malcontent HANLEY RAMIREZ will reluctantly move to 3B, but hopefully he will play harder under Guillen than he has under the previous two skippers. OF GIANCARLO STANTON hit 34 HR last year and will drive in 100 if Ramirez stays healthy. OF LOGAN MORRISON cranked 23 bombs, but his batting average dipped to .247 with this new-found power. 1B GABY SANCHEZ fizzled after August 1 (.211 BA), but still had 19 HR and 78 RBI. OF EMILIO BONIFACIO swiped 40 bases and led the team with a .296 average, but he'll move down the order because of Reyes. C JOHN BUCK and 2B OMAR INFANTE's jobs are secure, but 22-year-old prospect MATT DOMINGUEZ might start 2012 in Triple-A instead of sitting and watching Ramirez and Sanchez at the corner infield spots. STARTING PITCHING: JOSH JOHNSON is dominant when healthy, but he's made only 88 starts over the past five seasons. His shoulder feels great after surgery last year, and he expects to take the mound on Opening Day. MARK BUEHRLE followed his former manager and signed a 4-year, $58M deal with Miami. The 33-year-old lefty was 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA last year, his 11th straight season of 200+ IP and 10+ wins. RICKY NOLASCO once again had 10 wins and a strong K-to-BB ratio (3.4), but also sported an 8.18 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in his final eight starts. ANIBAL SANCHEZ posted a second straight productive season, fanning 202 batters in 196.1 innings. He did give up twice as many HR (20) as he did in 2010 though. CARLOS ZAMBRANO will begin 2012 in the rotation, but where he ends up is anybody's guess. If Guillen can motivate him, Zambrano has plenty of innings left in his 30-year-old arm. RELIEF PITCHING: The signing of HEATH BELL to a three-year deal gives the Marlins a reliable long-term closer for the first time since Robb Nen in the mid-'90s. Bell's numbers could suffer a bit with the move to a smaller ballpark and an alarming drop in strikeout rate (11.1 in 2010 to 7.3 in 2011), but he still throws 94 mph. STEVE CISHEK will be the main set-up man for Bell and could see a handful of saves, converting all three opportunities last year and fanning 55 batters in 54.2 innings. MIKE DUNN is the lefty set-up man in this bullpen. He has great stuff (100 K in 86 career innings), but remains extremely wild (53 walks in those 86 IP). | | CHI WHITE SOX: HITTING: The departure of Juan Pierre opens things up for SS ALEXEI RAMIREZ to hit leadoff. 2B GORDON BECKHAM will get a fresh start, but his leash is shortening. 1B PAUL KONERKO faded last year. He's potential trade bait for the rebuilding Sox. Did DH ADAM DUNN need a year to adjust to A.L. pitching and DHing? With his contract, the Sox will have to find out. OF ALEJANDRO DE AZA's late-season surge probably wasn't for real, but it was enough to get him the inside track on a starting job with Carlos Quentin having been dealt to the Padres on New Year's Eve. OF ALEX RIOS has bounced back before, but at his age the odds are longer now. The organization believes in OF DAYAN VICIEDO. His improving approach and power fit well in U.S. Cellular, but he could platoon with KOSUKE FUKUDOME in left field. C A.J. PIERZYNSKI has motivation for one more solid season as free agency looms. 3B BRENT MOREL is good glove, but has a limited stick. OF/1B BRENT LILLIBRIDGE has an improving bat and can play just about anywhere. STARTING PITCHING: JOHN DANKS doesn't look like a true No. 1 starter, but he keeps consistently throwing strikes and has some swing-and-miss stuff. Maybe it's because he's fallen short of his once-elite prospect status, but GAVIN FLOYD seems to get no respect as a quality middle-of-the-rotation arm. He was especially good after adding a cutter/slider-type pitch last year. JAKE PEAVY isn't going to win another Cy Young, but unlike last year, his shoulder should be close to 100 percent. The big question will again be whether, as a flyball pitcher, he can keep the ball in the park at cozy U.S. Cellular. PHILIP HUMBER was a nice surprise in 2011, but don't be fooled. It wasn't a former top prospect finally figuring it out. It was a back-of-the-rotation arm getting some good breaks. CHRIS SALE will make the move to the rotation. He'll likely be on some pitch counts, but this is an exciting development. With his stuff (he already has a solid changeup to go with his fastball/slider combo) he has monster upside. RELIEF PITCHING: With closer Sergio Santos shipped off to Toronto, youngster ADDISON REED figures to be the top candidate to close games. Any young closer is a risk, but Reed's fastball/slider combo has been dominant over two pro seasons. Lefty MATT THORNTON might have blown his chance to claim the closer role last year. He had regained his form as a top set-up man late in the year, but if Reed falters he might be no more than a committee guy. JESSE CRAIN chased strikeouts more aggressively last year, but he also issued more walks. He may miss the first couple weeks of the season with an oblique injury. |

*Marlins-White Sox Preview* ===========================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Miami (13-35) at Chicago (22-24), 2:10 p.m. EDT
Despite lackluster offense and some spotty defense, the Chicago White Sox are in position to reach .500 for the first time since the second week of the season.
They can do so by completing a three-game home sweep of the lowly Miami Marlins on Sunday.
Chicago (23-24) ranks near the bottom of the major leagues with 172 runs and a .241 batting average, and is tied for the AL lead with 33 errors. The rotation has been the difference, as the starters have gone at least six innings nine times and posted a 3.12 ERA in helping the White Sox win eight of 11.
Jake Peavy gave up a tying home run to infielder Derek Dietrich in the ninth Saturday, but Conor Gillaspie delivered a single in the bottom of the inning that gave Chicago a 2-1 win.
"Baseball is such a funny game because everybody feeds off each other," said Gillaspie, 5 for 8 in this series. "Everybody's excited. You can feel it in the clubhouse."
Though Chicago has scored 11 runs in four games, it's won three and can move to .500 for the first time since it was 4-4 on April 10.
Hosting a Miami team that's dropped 14 of 17 has certainly helped the White Sox move closer to the break-even mark. Last in the majors with 129 runs and a .221 average, the Marlins (13-36) have scored seven times during their current four-game skid.
Putting up runs could again prove to be a challenge Sunday against Chicago's Dylan Axelrod (2-3, 4.13 ERA), who looks to win his third straight start. He allowed two runs - both on a homer - and three other hits in six innings of a 6-4 victory over Boston on Monday.
Axelrod has given up three or fewer runs in seven of his nine starts.
"Axe is one of those guys that, again he doesn't light up the radar screen, but he knows how to pitch and get through a lineup," manager Robin Ventura said.
The right-hander has never faced Miami, which lost 4-3 in 11 innings Friday.
"At the end of the day, we can't score any runs," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "We have to be perfect. Pitch perfect every night."
Miami has posted a 2.96 ERA in the past three games.
Alex Sanabia (3-6, 4.56) turned in a strong effort to snap his five-start losing streak Monday, allowing a homer in 6 1-3 innings of a 5-1 victory over Philadelphia.
The win came amidst controversy, however, as the right-hander was caught by television cameras spitting on the ball in the second inning. Neither Sanabia or Redmond said they have been contacted by the league about the incident.
"I don't know what they expect from spitting on it," Sanabia said. "My intention wasn't to be like `Let's get more movement.' My intention was I need more grip."
He is 0-3 with a 5.87 ERA on the road since throwing six scoreless innings in a 7-5 victory at Citi Field on April 5.
Dietrich is batting .250, but has reached base in all 14 games since making his major league debut May 8. He's hit two of his three home runs in this set.
