| |  | BOSTON: HITTING: OF JACOBY ELLSBURY's 2011 breakout was no fluke. He has real power to complement his elite speed. 2B DUSTIN PEDROIA bounced back from a slow start to finish with career highs in HR and RBI. He benefits from hitting behind Ellsbury. 3B KEVIN YOUKILIS is a huge injury risk. His best seasons are behind him. 1B ADRIAN GONZALEZ wasted no time winning over Boston fans last year, and should hit even more HR in 2012. DH DAVID ORTIZ has put together two straight impressive years after being left for dead in 2009. 2011 Super Bust OF CARL CRAWFORD will bounce back, just not as much as most experts think. Most of the catcher duties will go to C JARROD SALTALAMACCHIA, with C KELLY SHOPPACH getting ABs against lefties. Right field will be filled by former Giants playoff hero CODY ROSS. SS NICK PUNTO replaces Marco Scutaro, who is now in Colorado. 3B MIKE AVILES is a solid hitter with the defensive flexibility to end up with semi-regular ABs.
STARTING PITCHING: JON LESTER seems to have leveled off as a very good pitcher instead of ascending into an elite class. He lost some speed on his pitches and got hit a little harder in 2011. Coming off the best season of his up-and-down career, JOSH BECKETT's numbers are bound to regress a bit in 2012. Back problems limited CLAY BUCHHOLZ last season, and he lost some of the zip on his fastball. He'll tally a low ERA and 15+ wins if he can stay healthy. ALFREDO ACEVES was outstanding out of the bullpen last year, and will compete for a rotation spot this year. He was a starter for years in the Mexican League and the minors. Former setup man DANIEL BARD is being converted to a starter, but he may wind up back in the bullpen later on. After Tommy John surgeries, DAISUKE MATSUZAKA is due to return around July, while JOHN LACKEY won't be back until 2013.
RELIEF PITCHING: ANDREW BAILEY was a acquired from Oakland in December for a heap of prospects. He's one of the best closers in baseball, and may even be an upgrade from departed Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth. Time will tell how he'll handle the increased scrutiny of playing in Boston. Coming over in a trade for infielder Jed Lowrie, MARK MELANCON was excellent as a closer last season in Houston and should be Bailey's main set-up man in the eighth inning. BOBBY JENKS has ninth-inning experience, but he will be out at least two months coming off a pulmonary embolism. | | CHI WHITE SOX: HITTING: The departure of Juan Pierre opens things up for SS ALEXEI RAMIREZ to hit leadoff. 2B GORDON BECKHAM will get a fresh start, but his leash is shortening. 1B PAUL KONERKO faded last year. He's potential trade bait for the rebuilding Sox. Did DH ADAM DUNN need a year to adjust to A.L. pitching and DHing? With his contract, the Sox will have to find out. OF ALEJANDRO DE AZA's late-season surge probably wasn't for real, but it was enough to get him the inside track on a starting job with Carlos Quentin having been dealt to the Padres on New Year's Eve. OF ALEX RIOS has bounced back before, but at his age the odds are longer now. The organization believes in OF DAYAN VICIEDO. His improving approach and power fit well in U.S. Cellular, but he could platoon with KOSUKE FUKUDOME in left field. C A.J. PIERZYNSKI has motivation for one more solid season as free agency looms. 3B BRENT MOREL is good glove, but has a limited stick. OF/1B BRENT LILLIBRIDGE has an improving bat and can play just about anywhere.
STARTING PITCHING: JOHN DANKS doesn't look like a true No. 1 starter, but he keeps consistently throwing strikes and has some swing-and-miss stuff. Maybe it's because he's fallen short of his once-elite prospect status, but GAVIN FLOYD seems to get no respect as a quality middle-of-the-rotation arm. He was especially good after adding a cutter/slider-type pitch last year. JAKE PEAVY isn't going to win another Cy Young, but unlike last year, his shoulder should be close to 100 percent. The big question will again be whether, as a flyball pitcher, he can keep the ball in the park at cozy U.S. Cellular. PHILIP HUMBER was a nice surprise in 2011, but don't be fooled. It wasn't a former top prospect finally figuring it out. It was a back-of-the-rotation arm getting some good breaks. CHRIS SALE will make the move to the rotation. He'll likely be on some pitch counts, but this is an exciting development. With his stuff (he already has a solid changeup to go with his fastball/slider combo) he has monster upside.
RELIEF PITCHING: With closer Sergio Santos shipped off to Toronto, youngster ADDISON REED figures to be the top candidate to close games. Any young closer is a risk, but Reed's fastball/slider combo has been dominant over two pro seasons. Lefty MATT THORNTON might have blown his chance to claim the closer role last year. He had regained his form as a top set-up man late in the year, but if Reed falters he might be no more than a committee guy. JESSE CRAIN chased strikeouts more aggressively last year, but he also issued more walks. He may miss the first couple weeks of the season with an oblique injury. |

Adam Dunn is finally finding a rhythm at the plate, and that's a big reason why the Chicago White Sox are having some success.
Dunn looks to build on another powerful display Tuesday night while trying to help the White Sox to another victory over the Boston Red Sox.
Dunn's .183 average in two-plus seasons with Chicago (20-23) is the lowest in the majors, and his 453 strikeouts are the most. The slugger, an All-Star in 2012, has been able to counter that anemic production by hitting 63 homers with 163 RBIs.
This year hasn't been much different as he's hitting .172 with 11 homers and 25 RBIs - and 54 strikeouts in 145 at-bats.
He's showing signs of being able to change that, going 9 for 25 with two doubles, five homers and 13 RBIs during the White Sox's 5-2 run.
"When he's right, he can do a lot of damage," manager Robin Ventura said. "His pitch selection is good. I don't know mechanically exactly what it is but when a guy knows he's in the right position to hit and he's more confident, it comes down to pitch selection."
Dunn's big bat was on display again Monday, hitting a three-run, two-out homer in the first inning to spur a 6-4 win in the opener of this three-game set with Boston (27-18).
"It was hard to sit here and keep saying over and over and over how good I felt, with no results," Dunn said. "Hopefully these results keep coming and people start believing me that I wasn't lying to them."
He's 3 for 26 with two homers and five RBIs in his last eight meetings with the Red Sox, and 0 for 4 versus Felix Doubront, Tuesday's scheduled starter.
Doubront (3-1, 6.03) won both of his starts against Chicago last year, yielding four runs in 12 innings.
He hasn't come close to being that sharp lately, going 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in three starts after compiling a 3-0 record and 4.24 ERA in his first four.
The left-hander battled through 104 pitches in five innings Thursday, issuing a career-high six walks while allowing two runs and three hits and not getting a decision in a 4-3 win at Tampa Bay.
"I finally figured out my pitches," Doubront told the team's official website. "My breaking balls, changeups and curveballs, I started getting the feeling back. I wasn't that consistent, but I had good spin and my grip was good."
The Red Sox are unsure if they'll have Shane Victorino. who is day-to-day available after he injured his left hamstring running the bases in the sixth inning Monday. He missed two games last week with a back injury.
"Given what he's been dealing with, low back, I wasn't going to take any chances in that situation," manager John Farrell said.
Dustin Pedroia is batting .449 during a 12-game hitting streak, his longest since a 15-game run from Aug. 21-Sept. 4.
Chicago is expected to send Jose Quintana (2-1, 3.97) to the mound as he tries for his first win since beating Cleveland on April 24. The left-hander is 0-1 with a 5.16 ERA in four starts since.
He didn't get a decision in his latest outing Thursday, surrendering four runs with three walks in 6 2-3 innings of a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
Quintana was terrific in his only start versus Boston on July 19, tossing eight shutout innings before closer Addison Reed served up a three-run, walkoff homer in a 3-1 loss.
