KEY GAME INFORMATION
SEATTLE: HITTING: C/DH JESUS MONTERO was brought over from the Yankees to hit in the heart of the order. At age 22, his offensive potential is scary. OF ICHIRO SUZUKI is entering the twilight of his career, but he might still have another .300 season left. 2B DUSTIN ACKLEY is the kind of line-drive hitter who fits well in Safeco, but he needs to catch up to MLB pitching. 1B JUSTIN SMOAK has disappointed, but he's making strides and has 30-HR upside. OF CASPER WELLS could play everyday. He won't hit for average, but has the power Seattle needs. MIKE CARP figures to at least grab early at-bats against righties. He'll strike out, but has lots of power. OF FRANKLIN GUTIERREZ is out for at least a month with a pectoral injury, but will reclaim his starting gig based on his defense. Seattle would love to see OF MICHAEL SAUNDERS step up to replace Gutierrez, but he's shown no signs of being able to handle MLB pitching. C MIGUEL OLIVO still has solid power, but he's an all-or-nothing hitter. 3B CHONE FIGGINS isn't quite done, but he's close. He'll have to battle line-drive hitting KYLE SEAGER for a job. SS BRENDAN RYAN will stick around for defense, but his bat is barely good enough for a regular gig.
STARTING PITCHING: FELIX HERNANDEZ had a touch of bad luck last year, but he's one of the few pitchers in baseball who's a lock for 200 strikeouts. JASON VARGAS just keeps throwing strikes and letting his defense make plays. He'll get by fine again in spacious Safeco. BLAKE BEAVAN doesn't have a strikeout pitch, but he'll make few mistakes and get some outs thanks to a strong defense. HECTOR NOESI, who also came over from New York with Montero, isn't a big strikeout pitcher, but has good control and is savvy enough to get his shot in Seattle's rotation this year. 37-year-old journeyman KEVIN MILLWOOD will fill out the fifth spot in the rotation after a solid spring. Top prospect DANNY HULTZEN could break into the bigs in 2012. The lefty has the polish of a big leaguer right now, though his ceiling is more good-not-great.
RELIEF PITCHING: Like many rebuilding teams, the Mariners will continue to shop their closer. BRANDON LEAGUE will pick up saves in Seattle, but he's more of a groundball pitcher than a strikeout artist. He'd likely be ticketed for a set-up role elsewhere. If League is traded, the closer role is wide open. SHAWN KELLEY came back from Tommy John surgery late last year and looked as good as ever. If he picks up where he left off last year, he'd be an obvious choice for ninth inning duties. CHANCE RUFFIN, part of the Doug Fister trade, has a strong minor-league track record. He could carve out a big role in this bullpen if he can improve his command.
CHI WHITE SOX: HITTING: The departure of Juan Pierre opens things up for SS ALEXEI RAMIREZ to hit leadoff. 2B GORDON BECKHAM will get a fresh start, but his leash is shortening. 1B PAUL KONERKO faded last year. He's potential trade bait for the rebuilding Sox. Did DH ADAM DUNN need a year to adjust to A.L. pitching and DHing? With his contract, the Sox will have to find out. OF ALEJANDRO DE AZA's late-season surge probably wasn't for real, but it was enough to get him the inside track on a starting job with Carlos Quentin having been dealt to the Padres on New Year's Eve. OF ALEX RIOS has bounced back before, but at his age the odds are longer now. The organization believes in OF DAYAN VICIEDO. His improving approach and power fit well in U.S. Cellular, but he could platoon with KOSUKE FUKUDOME in left field. C A.J. PIERZYNSKI has motivation for one more solid season as free agency looms. 3B BRENT MOREL is good glove, but has a limited stick. OF/1B BRENT LILLIBRIDGE has an improving bat and can play just about anywhere.
STARTING PITCHING: JOHN DANKS doesn't look like a true No. 1 starter, but he keeps consistently throwing strikes and has some swing-and-miss stuff. Maybe it's because he's fallen short of his once-elite prospect status, but GAVIN FLOYD seems to get no respect as a quality middle-of-the-rotation arm. He was especially good after adding a cutter/slider-type pitch last year. JAKE PEAVY isn't going to win another Cy Young, but unlike last year, his shoulder should be close to 100 percent. The big question will again be whether, as a flyball pitcher, he can keep the ball in the park at cozy U.S. Cellular. PHILIP HUMBER was a nice surprise in 2011, but don't be fooled. It wasn't a former top prospect finally figuring it out. It was a back-of-the-rotation arm getting some good breaks. CHRIS SALE will make the move to the rotation. He'll likely be on some pitch counts, but this is an exciting development. With his stuff (he already has a solid changeup to go with his fastball/slider combo) he has monster upside.
RELIEF PITCHING: With closer Sergio Santos shipped off to Toronto, youngster ADDISON REED figures to be the top candidate to close games. Any young closer is a risk, but Reed's fastball/slider combo has been dominant over two pro seasons. Lefty MATT THORNTON might have blown his chance to claim the closer role last year. He had regained his form as a top set-up man late in the year, but if Reed falters he might be no more than a committee guy. JESSE CRAIN chased strikeouts more aggressively last year, but he also issued more walks. He may miss the first couple weeks of the season with an oblique injury.

*Mariners-White Sox Preview* ============================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Seattle (3-2) at Chicago (2-2), 1:10 p.m. EDT

If Felix Hernandez is to build on a strong opening day performance, he must find a way to achieve some rare success at U.S. Cellular Field.

The Seattle ace hopes to turn things around on Chicago's south side Saturday and lead the Mariners to a second straight win over the White Sox for the first time in three-and-a-half years.

Hernandez allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked one in 7 2-3 innings of Monday's 2-0 win at Oakland. It was the ideal way to start the season for Hernandez, who went 0-4 with a 6.62 ERA in his final six starts of 2012.

"I was hoping to get us started the right way," said Hernandez, who turns 27 on Monday. "It's pretty special."

The 2010 AL Cy Young award winner looked worthy of the $175 million, seven-year contract he signed in February.

"Opening Day, midseason, you really can't tell the difference," Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan told the team's official website. "He's such a competitor and I just love the way he gets excited out there when guys are making plays behind him. Most of the time we don't because he's making guys miss. You always feel good about your chances when he's out there."

Hernandez, however, is 1-4 with a 4.75 ERA in seven career starts at Chicago. He's 0-2 with a 5.30 ERA in his last three there since giving up four hits and striking out nine in eight innings of a 9-1 win April 28, 2009.

Seattle (3-2) won for the fifth time in 29 games against the White Sox with Friday's 8-7 victory in 10 innings. The Mariners last won consecutive games versus Chicago (2-2) on Sept. 16-17, 2009. They've not won a series at U.S. Cellular since 2007.

"We don't look at that. We've got a completely different cast of characters here," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said.

"What we're trying to do is win series, and you get that first win of a series and it goes a long way heading in the right direction."

Franklin Gutierrez had three hits with a homer and three RBIs, and Kendrys Morales and Jesus Montero each drove in 10th-inning runs as the Mariners snapped a four-game skid at Chicago. The White Sox overcame a 6-1 deficit, but left the bases loaded in the 10th.

Healthy after injuries limited him to 132 games the previous two seasons, Gutierrez is 7 for 17 with two home runs and six RBIs. He's 11 for 24 in his last six games versus Chicago.

Alex Rios and Alejandro De Aza each homered and drove in two runs for the White Sox.

"The good part about (Friday) is it's over, basically," said Chicago slugger Adam Dunn, who is 3 for 16 with homer and six strikeouts. "We'll come out (Saturday) and hopefully get `em."

Rios is 6 for 15 on the season and batting .381 (16 for 42) with two homers and 10 RBIs during an 11-game hitting streak against the Mariners.

With John Danks on the disabled list while recovering from shoulder surgery, Dylan Axelrod will make his first appearance against the Mariners on Saturday. The right-hander went 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 10 starts over the last two seasons for Chicago.
