| | | SAN FRANCISCO: 2016: 87-75, second place
Manager: Bruce Bochy (11th season)
Who's new? RHP Mark Melancon, C Nick Hundley, IF Jae-Gyun Hwang
Who's gone? OF Angel Pagan, OF Gregor Blanco, RHP Jake Peavy, RHP Santiago Casilla, RHP Sergio Romo, LHP Javier Lopez
Projected lineup: CF Denard Span (.266, 11 HR, 53 RBI, 12 SB), 1B Brandon Belt (.275, 17 , 82), C Buster Posey (.288, 14, 80), RF Hunter Pence (.289, 13, 57), SS Brandon Crawford (.275, 12, 84), 3B Eduardo Nunez (.288, 16, 67, 40 SBs with Giants and Twins), 2B Joe Panik (.239, 10, 62), LF Jarrett Parker (.236, 5, 14) or Mac Williamson (.223, 6, 15)
Rotation: LH Madison Bumgarner (15-9, 2.74 ERA), RH Johnny Cueto (18-5, 2.79), RH Jeff Samardzija (12-11, 3.81), LH Matt Moore (13-12, 4.08 with Giants and Rays), RH Matt Cain (4-8, 5.64)
Key relievers: RH Mark Melancon (2-2, 1.64, 47/51 SV with Nationals), RH Hunter Strickland (3-3, 3.10), RH Derek Law (4-2, 2.13), LH Steven Okert (0-0, 3.21) or Josh Osich (1-3, 4.71), RH Cory Gearrin (3-2, 4.28), RH George Kontos (3-2, 2.53)
Hot spot: Bullpen and left field. No team blew more saves last year than the Giants. The front office hopes it found the answer by signing three-time All-Star closer Melancon to a (then-record) four-year, $62 million deal, and by cutting ties with Romo and Casilla. They will need to replace Will Smith, a key lefty who tore his UCL in spring training. Veteran outfielder Pagan left after five seasons in San Francisco. Rather than fill his shoes via free agency or trade, the unproven tandem of Williamson and Parker is expected to share time in left.
Outlook: The Giants have an established core of position players, and an enviable 1-2 rotation punch in Bumgarner and Cueto. That's probably why the front office did little in the offseason besides overhaul the back end of the bullpen. Hwang, who hit 26 home runs and drove in 104 last year in Korea, is an intriguing addition to the bench. Mostly the Giants are counting on continuity. Former NL MVP Posey is coming off a below-average season by his standards, and sparkplug Pence missed nearly two months last year with a hamstring injury. Expecting both to bounce back isn't a stretch, and new closer Melancon is as good as they come. At full strength, this Giants team should be able to give the Dodgers a good run. | | CHICAGO CUBS: 2016: 103-58, won World Series
Manager: Joe Maddon (third season)
Who's new? OF Jon Jay, RHP Wade Davis, LHP Brett Anderson, RHP Koji Uehara, LHP Brian Duensing, RHP Eddie Butler
Who's gone? OF Dexter Fowler, IF/OF Jorge Soler, LHP Aroldis Chapman, LHP Travis Wood, RHP Trevor Cahill, RHP Jason Hammel
Projected lineup: LF Kyle Schwarber (.000, 0 HR, 0 RBI in two games), 3B Kris Bryant (.292, 39, 102), 1B Anthony Rizzo (.292, 32, 109), 2B Ben Zobrist (.272, 18, 76), SS Addison Russell (.238, 21, 95), RF Jason Heyward (.230, 7, 49, 11 SB), C Willson Contreras (.282, 12, 35), CF Jon Jay (.291, 2, 26 with Padres) or Albert Almora (.277, 3, 14 in 47 games)
Rotation: LH Jon Lester (19-5, 2.44 ERA), RH Jake Arrieta (18-8, 3.10), RH Kyle Hendricks (16-8, 2.13), RH John Lackey (11-8, 3.35), LH Brett Anderson (1-2, 11.91 in four games with Dodgers) or LH Mike Montgomery (4-5, 2.52 with Mariners and Cubs) or RH Eddie Butler (2-5, 7.17 with Rockies) or LH Rob Zastryzny (1-0, 1.13 ERA in eight games) or RH Alec Mills (0-0, 13.50 in three games with Royals)
Key relievers: RH Wade Davis (2-1, 1.87, 27/30 SV with Royals), RH Pedro Strop (2-2, 2.85), RH Hector Rondon (2-3, 3.53, 18/23 SV), RH Koji Uehara (2-3, 3.45, 7/9 SV with Red Sox), RH Carl Edwards Jr. (0-1, 3.75), RH Justin Grimm (2-1, 4.10), LH Brian Duensing (1-0, 4.05 with Royals)
Hot spots: Fifth Starter. Of all the candidates vying to replace Hammel, who signed with Kansas City as a free agent, most have plenty of upside but didn't log many innings last year. That includes Anderson, who had one productive season and one unproductive season for the Dodgers. Keep an eye on southpaw Montgomery, who tossed two shutouts as a starter for the Mariners in 2015, came to the Cubs last year in a midseason trade, then was effective as a reliever. Last time he was on the mound, he recorded the save in Game 7 of the World Series.
Outlook: There hasn't been a back-to-back champion this century. For opponents of the Cubs, that might be the most tangible nugget of hope. Most of the key players return from a powerhouse team that played historically good defense, got no fewer than 165 innings from each of its top five starters, and featured a deep lineup led by NL MVP Kris Bryant. In the bullpen, two-time All-Star Davis is capable of replacing closer Chapman if he's healthy. Among the Cubs' regular position players, only Zobrist and new center fielder Jay are over 30 ' everyone else is either entering or in the midst of his prime. This is a strong outlook. |
| | Giants look to continue rebound as they visit Cubs
CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs will go for their fifth win in the last six games when they open a four-game series against the San Francisco Giants on Monday night. Despite the Cubs' recent success, manager Joe Maddon is not satisfied. He is looking for an error-free performance from his team, which is 22-20 on the season and 11-10 at Wrigley Field. "We've done better on this homestand, but we're still not playing our best baseball," Maddon said. "If we're not fundamentally where we need to be, that's where my focus is. More than anything, I want to see us play that championship-caliber defense. That's what's going to get us back there." San Francisco (19-26) knows a thing or two about championships, but this season has not gone according to plan. However, the Giants have won seven of their past nine games as they head north from St. Louis to meet the Cubs. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he was encouraged after watching his team win two games over the weekend. "We're leaving here feeling pretty good," Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle. "Trust me." Perhaps nobody feels as good as Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant. The reigning National League Most Valuable Player enters the series with three home runs in his past three games and eight home runs in his past 18 games. Bryant hit in the No. 3 spot for the first time this season on Sunday in the Cubs' 13-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers, and he went 3-for-3 with two homers and four runs. "I'm on board," Bryant said. "I like it. I've been used to hitting second, but I guess my favorite spot would be (third)." The reconfigured lineup had Ben Zobrist batting leadoff and Kyle Schwarber in the No. 2 spot in the order. Zobrist hit a leadoff homer in the first inning, and Schwarber had an RBI single in the sixth. Right-hander John Lackey (4-3, 4.37 ERA) will start for the Cubs on Monday. The 38-year-old has won three decisions in a row after opening the season with a 1-3 record. He has walked five and struck out 23 in his past 23 1/3 innings. Lackey will face the Giants for the first time this season. In his career, he is 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA in three starts against San Francisco. One of those starts came last year, when Lackey received a no-decision despite limiting the Giants to one earned run on one hit in five innings. San Francisco left-hander Ty Blach (1-2, 4.15 ERA) will make his sixth start of the season and the eighth start of his career. The 26-year-old was the Giants' fifth-round pick out of Creighton in 2012. Blach is coming off his first win of the season, when he limited the Los Angeles Dodgers to one run in seven innings on Tuesday. Since joining the rotation on April 25, he is 1-2 with a 4.15 ERA. He has walked 10 and struck out 11 in 34 2/3 innings as a starter. The Cubs never have faced Blach, but many of their hitters have enjoyed success against southpaws this season. Bryant is hitting .379 (11-for-29) with four home runs and 10 RBIs against left-handers. Meanwhile, Albert Almora Jr. could earn a start based on his .393 average (11-for-28) with two home runs and five RBIs against southpaws. For the Giants, Eduardo Nunez is hitting .333 (5-for-15) with one RBI against Lackey. |
