KEY GAME INFORMATION
ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - Last October, the St. Louis Cardinals were sufficiently flush with arms that they carried rookie Shelby Miller and deposed closer Edward Mujica in ceremonial roles and made it to Game 6 of the World Series against Boston.
After leading major league rookies with 15 wins, Miller was limited to one postseason inning due to concerns about a heavy workload. Mujica was used only in mop-up duty after mid-September.
The National League champions are perhaps even deeper, across the board, entering opening day March 31 at Cincinnati. The team that tied for the major league high with 97 wins has a surplus of viable candidates.
''I think we have the potential to be great,'' said ace Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in NL Cy Young balloting. ''We just have to go out there, not listen to the hype, and perform.''
The 32-year-old Wainwright qualifies as the grizzled leader of a rotation that could include three members coming off big rookie debuts. Michael Wacha was a postseason sensation and the NLCS MVP, Miller went wire-to-wire as the fifth starter and Carlos Martinez, who's had an impressive spring, moved into the setup role when fellow rookie Trevor Rosenthal took over as closer.
Wacha and Martinez are 22, Miller and Rosenthal just 23.
There's also 15-game winner Lance Lynn, who struck out 10 in four innings of his last spring training start, and lefty Jaime Garcia could fit into the mix sometime in April coming off shoulder surgery. And don't forget Joe Kelly, another rookie who won 10 games and was the rotation's strongest starter much of the second half.
And one of the National League's best lineups, too.
Much is expected from a loyal fan base that extends several states, and that's OK.
''Our expectations,'' Lynn said, ''are higher than theirs.''
CHICAGO CUBS: CHICAGO (AP) - Wrigley Field is decked out for the party of a century.
As for the Chicago Cubs?
It looks like there won't be much to celebrate this season other than their ballpark's 100th anniversary. As Wrigley hits a milestone, the Cubs remain in a rebuilding mode, hoping to avoid their fifth straight losing season.
They have a new manager in Rick Renteria. Their outlook looks about the same, though.
It's all about the future, the prized prospects in the system, no matter how painful that might be to the players in uniform at the major league level. More lumps appear to be in store for the Cubs as they enter their third year with Theo Epstein as president of baseball operations.
''The objective is to win as many games as possible, be the last man standing and bring a championship to the city of Chicago,'' pitcher Edwin Jackson said. ''The motivation is still the same. The message is still the same. We want to go out and win. We don't want to go out and be a pushover.''

*Cardinals-Cubs Preview* ========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

St. Louis (87-69) at Chicago (69-87), 8:05 p.m. EDT

Clayton Kershaw's record-setting season figures to be enough to keep Adam Wainwright from winning his first Cy Young Award, but the Cardinals ace is still on the cusp of his 20th victory.

He's more worried about getting sickly St. Louis closer to the NL Central title Monday night as he takes the mound in the opener of this three-game set with the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Wainwright (19-9, 2.45 ERA) is one win shy of matching the Los Angeles Dodgers' Kershaw for the most in the majors and equaling his own career high set in 2010. He's also third in the NL in ERA and WHIP (1.05), but is expected to finish behind the dominant Kershaw - the leader in both categories - in voting for the Cy Young.

Wainwright doesn't seem too concerned with personal accolades while St. Louis (87-69) is atop the Central by 2 1/2 games on second-place Pittsburgh with six games left in the regular season - one fewer than the Pirates.

The Cardinals, winners of seven of nine, clinched at least a wild-card spot Sunday before falling 7-2 to Cincinnati.

"October baseball is where the fun is always at," Wainwright told MLB's official website. "We're excited to be there for sure, but the road to where we want to go; the eventual World Series champ, hopefully. We know that comes easier through winning our division. We're going to aim there and hopefully be able to accomplish that.

"We got some very tough teams chasing us."

Having Wainwright on the mound should quell any concerns. The right-hander has won four straight starts with a 1.69 ERA while tossing two complete games after going 2-4 with a 5.17 ERA over his prior six outings.

The three-time All-Star continued to put that stretch behind him by going the distance in a 2-0 win over Milwaukee on Wednesday.

"For a long while I wasn't very good," Wainwright said. "It was good to be back making pitches when I need to."

That hasn't been too much of a problem against Chicago (69-87), as Wainwright has gone 4-1 with a 3.13 ERA in his past six starts after allowing five hits in seven innings of a 1-0 win on the North Side on July 27.

St. Louis is 9-7 in the season series, and while the Cubs have proved to be a formidable opponent, manager Mike Matheny seems more concerned about a flu bug that's impacted "north of 10 players."

He also mentioned that some players may not arrive in Chicago until closer to game time Monday.

"We might delay a couple guys, we don't know how many," said Matheny, who has kept Matt Adams and Matt Carpenter out for the last two games due to the illness.

The Cubs are entering their final home series of the season after losing 8-5 to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. They dropped three of four to the NL West leaders, with much of the blame falling on the rotation's 11.08 ERA.

Turning to Travis Wood (8-12, 4.86) may not help since he's 0-4 with a 5.43 ERA over his last 10 home starts. The lefty, however, was impressive last Monday, yielding three hits in six innings before Anthony Rizzo connected for a walk-off homer in a 1-0 win over Cincinnati.

Wood is 2-2 with a 4.99 ERA in seven starts against the Cardinals at Wrigley, most recently giving up homers to Carpenter and Matt Holliday among his five runs - two earned - allowed in five innings July 25.
