Who's gone? 1B Mark Teixeira, C Brian McCann, RHP Nate Eovaldi, RHP Kirby Yates, RHP Anthony Swarzak, RHP Nick Goody, RHP Blake Parker
Projected lineup: LF Brett Gardner (.261, 7 HR, 41 RBI, 16 SB), CF Jacoby Ellsbury (.263, 9, 56, 20), C Gary Sanchez (.299, 20, 42 in 53 games), DH Matt Holliday (.246, 20, 62 with Cardinals), 1B Greg Bird (did not play in 2016), 2B Starlin Castro (.270, 21, 70), 3B Chase Headley (.253, 14, 51), RH Aaron Judge (.179, 4, 10 in 27 games) or Aaron Hicks (.217, 8, 31), SS Tyler Wade (.259, 5, 27 at Double-A) or Ronald Torreyes (.258, 1, 12)
Rotation: RH Masahiro Tanaka (14-4, 3.07), LH C.C. Sabathia (9-12, 3.91), RH Michael Pineda (6-12, 4.82), RH Luis Severino (3-8, 5.83), RH Chad Green (2-4, 4.73) or RH Adam Warren (4-2, 3.26) or RH Luis Cessa (4-4, 4.35) or RH Bryan Mitchell (1-2, 3.24 in five games)
Key relievers: LH Aroldis Chapman (4-1, 1.55, 36/39 SV), RH Dellin Betances (3-6, 3.08), RH Tyler Clippard (3-6, 3.57), LH Tommy Layne (2-0, 3.38), LH Chasen Shreve (2-1, 5.18)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and right field. The starter's competition is not urgent ' the Yankees have five off-days in the first month of the season ' but it's interesting nonetheless. Green, Cessa, Warren and Mitchell combined to make 22 major league starts last season. None had an outstanding spring training, so the Yankees might choose to divide the load again. Some will go to Triple-A, others to the bullpen. Someone named Aaron (Judge or Hicks) will be the Yankees' right fielder this season. If either falters, Tyler Austin or Rob Refsnyder could seize their at-bats.
Outlook: The Yankees will employ fewer past-their-prime position players in 2017 than any season this decade. Is their next generation of homegrown talent ready to take over? Sanchez is the most advanced prospect ' the catcher hit 20 home runs in 53 games as a rookie ' but beyond him lies several question marks. Greg Bird, Clint Frazier, Gleyber Torres, Judge and Austin (who was stalled in camp by a foot injury) will get a chance once they're ready. The pitching staff is led by Tanaka and the ferocious bullpen combo of Chapman, Betances and Clippard. But depth is a real question mark, and there are no blue-chip prospects at Triple-A waiting for their moment.
BOSTON: 2016: 93-69, first place
Manager: John Farrell (fifth season)
Who's new? LHP Chris Sale, RHP Tyler Thornburg, 1B Mitch Moreland, OF Steve Selsky
Who's gone? DH David Ortiz, 3B Travis Shaw, 3B Yoan Moncada, 2B Aaron Hill, C Ryan Hanigan, RHP Clay Buchholz, RHP Junichi Tazawa, RHP Koji Uehara, RHP Brad Ziegler
Projected lineup: 2B Dustin Pedroia (.318, 15 HR, 74 RBI), LF Andrew Benintendi (.295, 2, 14 in 34 games), SS Xander Bogaerts (.294, 21, 89, 13 SB), RH Mookie Betts (.318, 31, 113), DH Hanley Ramirez (.286, 30, 111) CF Jackie Bradley Jr. (.267, 26, 87), 3B Pablo Sandoval (.000, 0, 0 in three games), 1B Mitch Moreland (.233, 22, 60 with Rangers), C Sandy Leon (.310, 7, 35) or Christian Vazquez (.224, 1, 12)
Rotation: LH Chris Sale (17-10, 3.34 ERA), RH Rick Porcello (22-4, 3.15), RH Steven Wright (13-6, 3.33), LH Drew Pomeranz (3-5, 4.59), LH Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7, 4.71)
Key relievers: RH Craig Kimbrel (2-6, 3.40, 31/33 SV), RH Tyler Thornburg (8-5, 2.15 with Brewers), RH Joe Kelly (4-0, 5.18), LH Robbie Ross (3-2, 3.25), RH Matt Barnes (4-3, 4.05), LH Fernando Abad (1-6, 3.66 with Twins and Red Sox), RH Heath Hembree (4-1, 2.65)
Hot spots: Third base. Is this the year Sandoval is known more for his ability to play baseball than his physique? Sandoval, who missed all but three games last year because of a shoulder injury, showed up to spring training looking slimmer than years past. His production at the plate and agility on the field followed suit in the Grapefruit League. The Red Sox have shown they aren't afraid to take playing time away from the Panda if he doesn't deserve it. Josh Rutledge, a competent fielder and perhaps a better hitter against left-handers, is around just in case.
Outlook: Boston scored more runs than any team in baseball last year, and this year's club has the pitching to avoid another early playoff exit. Newcomer Sale is the best left-hander in the AL, an ace in his prime. Porcello is the reigning Cy Young Award winner. David Price, when he returns from an elbow injury, gives the Red Sox arguably the best 1-2-3 punch in the league. Ortiz retired, but he'll leave a bigger hole in the hearts of fans than in the lineup. Benintendi is a candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year award, while Betts played like an MVP at age 23. A bounceback season from Sandoval would give opposing pitchers no chance to breathe. Triple-A depth shouldn't be enough of an issue to prevent the Sox from challenging the Indians for the pennant.
PREVIEW
Sabathia-Sale duel spices up Yankees-Red Sox clash

BOSTON -- CC Sabathia returns from his latest trip to the disabled list Saturday night.

But he almost didn't make it back to pitch for the New York Yankees against Red Sox ace Chris Sale.

Sabathia told the media before Friday night's game that he actually thought of retiring when his right knee took him out of a game in Toronto Aug. 8.

"Because it hurt," he said. "It's just not worth it."

Sabathia added, "I could go out there and I could throw four innings and hurt and pitch -- like I keep saying, I've pitched for a long time now. I'm not doing this for the money or anything like that. I'm doing this for fun and to try to win a championship and if I can't have fun and help this team win, then there's no reason for me to be out there."

But he's back -- and now he has to go against Boston's best, a night after the Yankees blew another game to their rivals.

Sabathina (9-5, 4.05 ERA) hasn't won since improving to 9-3 on July 21 and is 0-2 in his last three starts, allowing four earned runs in each and working a total of just 13 1/3 innings.

However, he has pitched twice against the Red Sox this season -- and hasn't allowed a run in 14 innings while winning both.

On July 16, at Fenway, Sabathia danced in and out of trouble but made it through six shutout innings despite a season-high five walks.

Sale got his first look at the New York part of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry when he pitched for Boston last Sunday night in the Bronx.

He noticed the difference from the days he pitched for the Chicago White Sox.

"You can feel it," Sale told WEEI earlier this week. "People in New York have never been really nice to me, but they hate me now. I heard some pretty interesting things out in the bullpen last time warming up. ... I don't go to New York to make friends."

Sale faces the Yankees for the fourth time this season -- the third at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox planned ahead when they had Sale on target to pitch in all three series between the teams in a 23-day span -- with good reason.

He is 4-2 with a ridiculous 1.18 ERA in 13 career outings -- 10 starts -- against the Yankees. He is 0-1 with a no-decision this year against New York with a 1.19 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings.

Sale, the Cy Young front-runner who is also being mentioned in the MVP talk, enters this game 14-4 with a 2.51 ERA -- and the Red Sox have scored five runs in his four losses.

Mookie Betts is Boston's leading hitter against Sabathia, who is 15-13 with a 4.22 lifetime against Boston, 6-5 with a 4.95 at Fenway Park. Betts is 7-for-16 (.353) but Hanley Ramirez is just 2-for-16 (.125, with a homer), Xander Bogaerts 4-for-24 (.167), Jackie Bradley Jr. 6-for-25 (.192) with 11 strikeouts and Chris Young 3-for-14 (.214).

The current Yankees have some ugly numbers against Sale. Aaron Judge is 0-for-7 with six strikeouts, Brett Gardner 2-for-16 (.125) and Gary Sanchez and Ronald Torreyes both 2-for-11 (.182). Aaron Hicks is 7-for-19 (.368) and Chase Headley 7-for-23 (.304) with two homers.

Friday night's comeback win was the Red Sox's second straight over the Yankees and moved them five games ahead of New York atop the American League East.
