KEY GAME INFORMATION
TAMPA BAY: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - A year after being a trendy preseason pick to contend for the World Series, the Tampa Bay Rays are back in a familiar role as underdogs.
''That's good. ... We like that,'' three-time All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria said, noting the team has a history of flourishing most when little is expected from outside the organization.
''I just think it's going to be a really good year,'' the club's career home run and RBIs leader said. ''We've got a young team, a bunch of guys eager to learn and get out there and win games. I'm really looking forward to that.''
Former manager Joe Maddon - and his often unconventional way of doing things - is gone.
So is Andrew Friedman, the young executive who was architect of the teams that made the playoffs four of the past seven seasons.
The roster has a much different look, too, with 10 key players from a year ago either traded or released this winter.
''The end result is a club that we have optimism about, a club that we're excited about, that we think can compete for a playoff spot. And, that's what we want,'' team president of baseball operations Matt Silverman said.
''Every year, we want to come into camp believing our team can play meaningful games in September and have a chance to go to the playoffs, and even beyond,'' Silverman added. ''We have that - and at the same time, we've reloaded our minor league system, added some players who impact us this year, might impact us in the future, and we're better off because of that.''
Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, catcher Rene Rivera, outfielder Steven Souza Jr., and pitchers Kevin Jepsen, Ernesto Frieri and Burch Smith are offseason acquisitions who could figure in the team's success - or failure.
Smith and two other young starters - Matt Andriese and Nathan Karns - figure to begin the season in the rotation because of injuries to Alex Cobb, Drew Smyly, and Matt Moore.
The hope is the rest of the projected rotation, Chris Archer and Jake Odorizzi, can help the Rays stay afloat until they can get back to full strength.
''If you've got starting pitching, you've got a leg up on going into the season,'' rookie manager Kevin Cash said. ''We're very fortunate with the pitchers we have - starters and relievers.''
Cobb, sidelined by a forearm strain during spring training, believes the team will thrive as underdogs.
''We're not going to get bullied. A lot of people are picking us at the bottom, and we're going to embrace that and have each other's backs,'' the right-hander said.
''Any time anybody calls you out in your profession and makes you feel like you're not as good as you know you are, there's always something to prove,'' Cobb said. ''I don't feel like we need to have extra motivation. It's just going to be that much sweeter when we go out there and perform well.''
A look at the keys to the Rays' season:
WHO WILL LEAD?: Pitching and defense were staples during six consecutive winning seasons that produced four playoff berths and one trip to the World Series. The Rays slipped to 77-85 a year ago, their first losing record since 2007. They're banking on Cash, who has no previous managerial experience, being the right fit to restore winning ways. At 37, he's the youngest current manager or head coach in the four major professional sports.
BETTER LONGO: Longoria played in every game in 2014 for the first time in his career, however he hit a disappointing .253 with 22 homers and 91 RBIs. He's moving into the cleanup spot after batting third most of his career, and knows he has to be more consistent if the Rays - last in the AL in runs scored a year ago - are going to have a chance to be better offensively.
BEHIND THE PLATE: Catcher Ryan Hanigan was traded and backup Jose Molina was released this winter. The three-team deal that sent Wil Myers to San Diego and brought Souza to Tampa Bay from Washington, also landed Rivera from the Padres.
The Rays believe he's an upgrade defensively, as well as offensively.
Rivera posted career highs with a .252 batting average, 11 homers and 44 RBI's in 103 games last season. Still, the 31-year-old catcher stresses his job is to provide solid direction behind the plate.
''I want to help my pitching staff first. I think that's what the game is all about. If you pitch well, you're going to win some games,'' Rivera said. ''If I get a hit here, a hit there and help us win some games, that's even better.''
BOSTON: BOSTON (AP) - A revamped lineup and change in attitude has the Boston Red Sox looking to repeat a feat they performed just two seasons ago when they went from worst to World Series champions.
Like the hip-hop song they blasted in their locker room after the 2013 division and World Series titles were clinched in Fenway Park, the Red Sox started at the bottom.
They've carried the theme over this season.
''There's a good vibe going around,'' said first baseman Mike Napoli, who rallies spirits in the clubhouse by growing beards with teammates. ''It feels a little like 2013 in here. We're just having fun.''
During this past offseason, GM Ben Cherington looked to grow a weak offense that finished 11th in the AL in scoring.
Cherington spent $88 million to sign Hanley Ramirez, who began in the organization's minor league system before stints with Miami and Los Angeles, and signed third baseman Pablo Sandoval to a five-year, $95 million deal.
It was a quick fix for a lineup that lacked pop besides another strong season by Big Papi.
''This has a chance to be a lineup that doesn't give the opposition too many breathers or take a hitter off - so to speak,'' manager John Farrell said. ''There's the ability to do some damage up and down the lineup.''
The 39-year old Ortiz posted a .263 average with 35 homers and 104 RBIs last season, his eighth time in 12 reaching 30/100 with the club.
The revised order still leaves the question of how Red Sox starting pitching will hold up.
Cherington moved quickly after left-hander Jon Lester opted not to return, signing instead with the Cubs.
The GM acquired right-hander Rick Porcello from Detroit for slugger Yoenis Cespedes, traded for lefty Wade Miley and signed free agent Justin Masterson, who was coming off an injury-plagued season. The trio is expected to join Clay Buchholz and Joe Kelly.
Some have questioned whether they have a top-of-the-rotation type. Buchholz thinks they'll feed off the doubters and strive.
''I think we're going to fly under the radar for the most part, which I think is a good thing,'' he said. ''At some point they're going to say, `They've got their stuff in order and they've got a pretty good staff.'''
They aren't hiding from how bad last season ended after going 71-91 and finishing 25 games out in the AL East.
''Our record says what we were, and that wasn't good,'' Farrell said.
---
A FUN TRIO
Just a few days into spring training, Ortiz dubbed himself, Ramirez and Sandoval as ''The Three Amigos.'' The three are expected to bring both pop and some interesting times in the clubhouse.
''This will be a lively group and, I think, a fun one to be part of,'' Farrell said. ''I think the biggest thing is, they love to play the game. You can see the joy come out of them when they do well, and there's no question they'll draw from one another - the confidence they'll draw from one another.''
---
NO STICKER SHOCK HERE
The Red Sox pledged more than $180 million to bring in Ramirez and Sandoval.
''The proven power hitter obviously has a hefty price tag attached to it,'' Farrell said.
Ramirez hit 13 homers with 71 RBIs. Sandoval had 16 with 73 and won a World Series with San Francisco.
---
KEEP QUIET AND PLAY
Shane Victorino, who had his 2014 season cut short by back surgery, isn't about to try to analyze what went wrong last season. He feels like it's time to move on and make up for it.
''You try to be the best team you can be,'' he said. ''Don't want to sit here and talk about this and talk about that. You've got to go out there and do it. There's no other way of looking at it.''
---
KEEP AN EYE ON THIS
Ortiz didn't want to listen to any new rules about speeding up the game by having batters keep one foot in the box in between pitches. He even joked that he'll run out of money if he's fined.
''This game has been going on for over 100 years,'' he said. ''It's the nature of the game. I don't care who you are, you're not going to change. The pitch comes through, you come out of the box, you come back in.''

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PA SPORTSTICKER AL PREVIEW (TAMPA BAY-BOSTON) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Rays-Red Sox Preview* ======================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Tampa Bay (51-52) at Boston (45-58), 1:35 p.m. EDT
Letting the trade deadline slip by without making any major deals, the Tampa Bay Rays think they already have enough to reach the postseason.
They could have a hard time getting there if they keep wasting opportunities against last-place teams, however.
They'll try to avoid a third straight loss Saturday against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
The Rays (51-53) were content to largely stay put at the deadline, only dealing reliever Kevin Jepsen to Minnesota for a pair of minor league pitching prospects. They're three games behind the Twins for the AL's second wild-card spot, and any improvements are likely going to have to come from in-house.
"The way we see it, three games out of the wild card today, if we play to our potential, we're going to be in it in September and have a chance at the postseason," president of baseball operations Matt Silverman told MLB's official website.
Tampa Bay, though, needs to ditch its recent habit of underachieving against lesser competition. The Rays dropped two of three at major league-worst Philadelphia from July 20-22, were swept in four games by cellar-dwelling Cleveland at home June 29-July 2, and lost two of three at home to Boston from June 26-28.
The season series with the Red Sox, who own the AL's second-worst record, is 5-5 after Boston won for just the fourth time in 16 games with a 7-5 victory Friday.
The Red Sox (46-58) also made little noise during deadline week, only acquiring reliever Ryan Cook from Oakland.
Facing Tampa Bay's Matt Moore (1-2, 7.61 ERA) doesn't appear intimidating after five uninspiring starts since returning from Tommy John surgery. He's failed to complete more than five innings and given up at least four runs four times.
Luck hasn't been on the left-hander's side, either, with opponents hitting .375 on balls in play.
"I feel fine ... I feel good out there," said Moore, who is surrendering a .441 on-base percentage with runners in scoring position. "It's just a matter of making a couple pitches in situations where you have runners on."
He won his last two starts against Boston, most recently a two-hitter in a 3-0 road victory July 22, 2013.
The Red Sox have been middling against lefties, hitting .245. David Ortiz is having his worst season ever against left-handers, batting .185, but he's fared well against Moore, going 6 for 13 with a home run and two doubles.
Joe Kelly (2-6, 5.94) has been one of many disappointments for Boston, especially after predicting before the season he'd win the Cy Young.
Kelly has been anything but fit for an award and is 0-2 with a 7.33 ERA in two starts since rejoining the team from Triple-A Pawtucket. He threw 3 1-3 innings Monday against the Chicago White Sox - his second-shortest effort of the season - giving up four earned runs and seven hits.
"You don't really predict that, but it is what it is right now," Kelly said of his struggles. "Something that I just have to keep fighting. I'm not going to give up out there. Just going to keep pitching."
Kelly gave up five runs over five-plus innings of Boston's 7-5 loss to the Rays on April 22. Steven Souza Jr. hit a solo shot off the right-hander.
Evan Longoria is 15 for 36 during a nine-game hitting streak against the Red Sox after a 3-for-4 night Friday.
