| |  | CHI WHITE SOX: CHICAGO (AP) - A decade removed from their most recent championship, the Chicago White Sox once again are eyeing a big season.
Their sights are set on an AL Central title after consecutive losing records, maybe even more. The White Sox added to their offense, boosted their rotation, overhauled their bullpen and sent expectations soaring.
''Obviously postseason first, and World Series,'' new closer David Robertson said. ''I mean that's what I look forward to every year. That's where I want to be.''
The addition of Robertson to the bullpen is among the reasons the White Sox believe they are armed and ready after going 73-89. But it's not the only one.
They added All-Star Jeff Samardzija to a rotation that already included ace Chris Sale. They added free agent Adam LaRoche to their lineup, giving AL Rookie of the Year Jose Abreu more protection, and brought in Melky Cabrera to solidify the No. 2 spot in the order behind Adam Eaton.
Is that enough to compete with Cleveland, Kansas City and Detroit in the division and make a run in the playoffs? The White Sox believe it is. Their fans are pumped, too.
With that in mind, here are some things to look for this season:
LINED UP: It would be hard for Abreu to match, let alone exceed, what he did last season. He batted .317 with 36 homers and 107 RBIs, one year after defecting from Cuba. While the White Sox tied for fourth in the AL in homers, they were just eighth in runs, ninth in batting average and 12th in on-base percentage.
LaRoche, who signed a $25 million, two-year contract, should give them power from the left side. He hit 26 homers and drove in 92 runs for Washington last season. Cabrera, a .301 hitter with Toronto, helps the top of the order.
''I think we're jelling together as a team. Hopefully that translates to wins in April,'' Eaton said.
SALE-ING ALONG: With Sale, Samardzija and Jose Quintana, the White Sox appear strong at the top of the rotation.
Sale made the AL All-Star team for the third time last season while going 12-4 with a 2.17 ERA with 208 strikeouts and 39 walks. Samardzija, acquired from Oakland, moves into the No. 2 spot. With Sale recovering from a broken foot, Samardzija - who grew up a White Sox fan - could wind up starting the opener at Kansas City after pitching the previous two for the Cubs.
CLOSING TIME: Chicago tied for seventh in the majors with 21 blown saves and had the fourth-lowest save percentage (63.2) last season. Robertson, who took over as closer after Mariano Rivera retired, saved 39 games for the New York Yankees last season. Chicago also brought in Zach Duke.
RODON WATCH: Whether he starts the season in the rotation or gets sent down to the minors, expect to see top prospect Carlos Rodon in a White Sox uniform at some point this season. The No. 3 pick in last year's amateur draft, he is on a fast track to the majors after three standout seasons at North Carolina State. Rodon, who made nine minor league appearances in 2014, could start the year in the rotation. If Rodon starts in the minors, veteran Brad Penny could make some early starts. | | BOSTON: BOSTON (AP) - A revamped lineup and change in attitude has the Boston Red Sox looking to repeat a feat they performed just two seasons ago when they went from worst to World Series champions.
Like the hip-hop song they blasted in their locker room after the 2013 division and World Series titles were clinched in Fenway Park, the Red Sox started at the bottom.
They've carried the theme over this season.
''There's a good vibe going around,'' said first baseman Mike Napoli, who rallies spirits in the clubhouse by growing beards with teammates. ''It feels a little like 2013 in here. We're just having fun.''
During this past offseason, GM Ben Cherington looked to grow a weak offense that finished 11th in the AL in scoring.
Cherington spent $88 million to sign Hanley Ramirez, who began in the organization's minor league system before stints with Miami and Los Angeles, and signed third baseman Pablo Sandoval to a five-year, $95 million deal.
It was a quick fix for a lineup that lacked pop besides another strong season by Big Papi.
''This has a chance to be a lineup that doesn't give the opposition too many breathers or take a hitter off - so to speak,'' manager John Farrell said. ''There's the ability to do some damage up and down the lineup.''
The 39-year old Ortiz posted a .263 average with 35 homers and 104 RBIs last season, his eighth time in 12 reaching 30/100 with the club.
The revised order still leaves the question of how Red Sox starting pitching will hold up.
Cherington moved quickly after left-hander Jon Lester opted not to return, signing instead with the Cubs.
The GM acquired right-hander Rick Porcello from Detroit for slugger Yoenis Cespedes, traded for lefty Wade Miley and signed free agent Justin Masterson, who was coming off an injury-plagued season. The trio is expected to join Clay Buchholz and Joe Kelly.
Some have questioned whether they have a top-of-the-rotation type. Buchholz thinks they'll feed off the doubters and strive.
''I think we're going to fly under the radar for the most part, which I think is a good thing,'' he said. ''At some point they're going to say, `They've got their stuff in order and they've got a pretty good staff.'''
They aren't hiding from how bad last season ended after going 71-91 and finishing 25 games out in the AL East.
''Our record says what we were, and that wasn't good,'' Farrell said.

A FUN TRIO
Just a few days into spring training, Ortiz dubbed himself, Ramirez and Sandoval as ''The Three Amigos.'' The three are expected to bring both pop and some interesting times in the clubhouse.
''This will be a lively group and, I think, a fun one to be part of,'' Farrell said. ''I think the biggest thing is, they love to play the game. You can see the joy come out of them when they do well, and there's no question they'll draw from one another - the confidence they'll draw from one another.''

NO STICKER SHOCK HERE
The Red Sox pledged more than $180 million to bring in Ramirez and Sandoval.
''The proven power hitter obviously has a hefty price tag attached to it,'' Farrell said.
Ramirez hit 13 homers with 71 RBIs. Sandoval had 16 with 73 and won a World Series with San Francisco.

KEEP QUIET AND PLAY
Shane Victorino, who had his 2014 season cut short by back surgery, isn't about to try to analyze what went wrong last season. He feels like it's time to move on and make up for it.
''You try to be the best team you can be,'' he said. ''Don't want to sit here and talk about this and talk about that. You've got to go out there and do it. There's no other way of looking at it.''

KEEP AN EYE ON THIS
Ortiz didn't want to listen to any new rules about speeding up the game by having batters keep one foot in the box in between pitches. He even joked that he'll run out of money if he's fined.
''This game has been going on for over 100 years,'' he said. ''It's the nature of the game. I don't care who you are, you're not going to change. The pitch comes through, you come out of the box, you come back in.'' |

The Chicago White Sox didn't provide Chris Sale with much support throughout most of June, but he's received plenty of help this month and got enough runs to win his last start before throwing a pitch.
The White Sox's lineup has produced at such a torrid clip that the franchise seems ready to alter its plans at the trading deadline and make a playoff push.
Chicago will try to take its next small step by climbing back to .500 and completing an 8-0 road trip with its first four-game sweep of the Red Sox at Fenway Park in 88 years.
Sale (9-5, 2.85 ERA) got a combined seven runs to work with in his final five starts in June and went 1-2 despite logging a 2.17 ERA. He's gone 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA in four games this month while backed with 17 runs.
Sale was spotted a five-run lead before taking the mound Saturday in Cleveland and gave up two runs in seven innings in a 10-3 victory.
Chicago (49-50) has batted .332 and scored 54 runs on its trip, and its seven-game win streak is the longest since a nine-game run May 23-June 1, 2012, and longest on the road since an eight-gamer that same season.
Melky Cabrera went 3 for 6 for his career-best seventh straight multihit game and has an RBI in nine straight contests, also a personal best.
Cabrera, batting .545 (18 for 33) with a 1.589 OPS in his last seven games, has also appeared to help push the White Sox out of selling mode before Friday's deadline. Chicago is rumored to have taken starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija off the market after climbing within 2 1/2 games of Minnesota for the AL's second wild-card spot.
The White Sox, winners in 11 of 12 on the road, still have two teams between them and the Twins. They're also tied with Tampa Bay but have passed three clubs since July 22.
"It seems like the team was left for dead a week ago and now it's got some life and is playing good baseball," manager Robin Ventura said. "You never know what's going to happen."
Chicago will try register its first four-game sweep at Fenway Park since June 2-6, 1927, and reach .500 for the first time since it was 18-18 on May 19. The only time the White Sox went unbeaten on a road trip of at least eight games came on an 11-game trek in 1951.
Sale looks to help deliver all three in his third career start against Boston. He had no record and a 1.23 ERA in his other two, both last season, and is 5-2 with a 2.02 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 58 innings in his last eight on the road.
It's unclear if he'll face Pablo Sandoval in this start after the third baseman left Wednesday's game due to dehydration.
"That's something that Pablo's dealt with his entire career," manager John Farrell said. "It continues to be addressed. ... There are ongoing efforts to support that, to try to get him in the best shape possible."
Steven Wright (3-4, 4.78) will make his first appearance against Chicago and try to avoid a third consecutive defeat since returning to the rotation. The knuckleballer has a 7.71 ERA in his two outings and gave up four runs in 4 1-3 innings Saturday in a 5-1 loss to Detroit.
Wright will try to lead Boston to just its third win in 15 games and help it avoid a season high-tying fourth consecutive home loss.
