| |  | SEATTLE: HITTING: C/DH JESUS MONTERO was brought over from the Yankees to hit in the heart of the order. At age 22, his offensive potential is scary. OF ICHIRO SUZUKI is entering the twilight of his career, but he might still have another .300 season left. 2B DUSTIN ACKLEY is the kind of line-drive hitter who fits well in Safeco, but he needs to catch up to MLB pitching. 1B JUSTIN SMOAK has disappointed, but he's making strides and has 30-HR upside. OF CASPER WELLS could play everyday. He won't hit for average, but has the power Seattle needs. MIKE CARP figures to at least grab early at-bats against righties. He'll strike out, but has lots of power. OF FRANKLIN GUTIERREZ is out for at least a month with a pectoral injury, but will reclaim his starting gig based on his defense. Seattle would love to see OF MICHAEL SAUNDERS step up to replace Gutierrez, but he's shown no signs of being able to handle MLB pitching. C MIGUEL OLIVO still has solid power, but he's an all-or-nothing hitter. 3B CHONE FIGGINS isn't quite done, but he's close. He'll have to battle line-drive hitting KYLE SEAGER for a job. SS BRENDAN RYAN will stick around for defense, but his bat is barely good enough for a regular gig.
STARTING PITCHING: FELIX HERNANDEZ had a touch of bad luck last year, but he's one of the few pitchers in baseball who's a lock for 200 strikeouts. JASON VARGAS just keeps throwing strikes and letting his defense make plays. He'll get by fine again in spacious Safeco. BLAKE BEAVAN doesn't have a strikeout pitch, but he'll make few mistakes and get some outs thanks to a strong defense. HECTOR NOESI, who also came over from New York with Montero, isn't a big strikeout pitcher, but has good control and is savvy enough to get his shot in Seattle's rotation this year. 37-year-old journeyman KEVIN MILLWOOD will fill out the fifth spot in the rotation after a solid spring. Top prospect DANNY HULTZEN could break into the bigs in 2012. The lefty has the polish of a big leaguer right now, though his ceiling is more good-not-great.
RELIEF PITCHING: Like many rebuilding teams, the Mariners will continue to shop their closer. BRANDON LEAGUE will pick up saves in Seattle, but he's more of a groundball pitcher than a strikeout artist. He'd likely be ticketed for a set-up role elsewhere. If League is traded, the closer role is wide open. SHAWN KELLEY came back from Tommy John surgery late last year and looked as good as ever. If he picks up where he left off last year, he'd be an obvious choice for ninth inning duties. CHANCE RUFFIN, part of the Doug Fister trade, has a strong minor-league track record. He could carve out a big role in this bullpen if he can improve his command. | | BOSTON: HITTING: OF JACOBY ELLSBURY's 2011 breakout was no fluke. He has real power to complement his elite speed. 2B DUSTIN PEDROIA bounced back from a slow start to finish with career highs in HR and RBI. He benefits from hitting behind Ellsbury. 3B KEVIN YOUKILIS is a huge injury risk. His best seasons are behind him. 1B ADRIAN GONZALEZ wasted no time winning over Boston fans last year, and should hit even more HR in 2012. DH DAVID ORTIZ has put together two straight impressive years after being left for dead in 2009. 2011 Super Bust OF CARL CRAWFORD will bounce back, just not as much as most experts think. Most of the catcher duties will go to C JARROD SALTALAMACCHIA, with C KELLY SHOPPACH getting ABs against lefties. Right field will be filled by former Giants playoff hero CODY ROSS. SS NICK PUNTO replaces Marco Scutaro, who is now in Colorado. 3B MIKE AVILES is a solid hitter with the defensive flexibility to end up with semi-regular ABs.
STARTING PITCHING: JON LESTER seems to have leveled off as a very good pitcher instead of ascending into an elite class. He lost some speed on his pitches and got hit a little harder in 2011. Coming off the best season of his up-and-down career, JOSH BECKETT's numbers are bound to regress a bit in 2012. Back problems limited CLAY BUCHHOLZ last season, and he lost some of the zip on his fastball. He'll tally a low ERA and 15+ wins if he can stay healthy. ALFREDO ACEVES was outstanding out of the bullpen last year, and will compete for a rotation spot this year. He was a starter for years in the Mexican League and the minors. Former setup man DANIEL BARD is being converted to a starter, but he may wind up back in the bullpen later on. After Tommy John surgeries, DAISUKE MATSUZAKA is due to return around July, while JOHN LACKEY won't be back until 2013.
RELIEF PITCHING: ANDREW BAILEY was a acquired from Oakland in December for a heap of prospects. He's one of the best closers in baseball, and may even be an upgrade from departed Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth. Time will tell how he'll handle the increased scrutiny of playing in Boston. Coming over in a trade for infielder Jed Lowrie, MARK MELANCON was excellent as a closer last season in Houston and should be Bailey's main set-up man in the eighth inning. BOBBY JENKS has ninth-inning experience, but he will be out at least two months coming off a pulmonary embolism. |

The Boston Red Sox once again find themselves out of first place after completing a mediocre stretch against the other three AL East contenders.
A visit from the Seattle Mariners could be what they need to get back on track.
Boston seeks a seventh straight home victory over Seattle in the opener of a three-game series Tuesday night.
The Red Sox (63-44) went 5-5 against the Yankees, Baltimore and Tampa Bay over the last 11 days, falling to the now first-place Rays for the third time in that stretch Monday.
Brandon Snyder's homer in the sixth inning accounted for Boston's only run in the 2-1 defeat, which was a makeup for Thursday's rainout. Manager John Farrell was ejected in the eighth inning after arguing Daniel Nava being called out at home plate. Replays showed Nava was safe.
"He had every right to be upset," outfielder Shane Victorino said when asked about Farrell's ejection. "The human error is part of the game and that stuff happens."
The Red Sox have dropped four of their last six at home, but they've won six straight over Seattle at Fenway Park and took the final three of a four-game series from the Mariners at Safeco Field from July 8-11.
Brandon Workman made his major league debut in that set, and he hopes this outing turns out better.
Workman (0-1, 4.40 ERA) gave up a homer to Brendan Ryan - the first batter he faced - and allowed three runs in two innings of relief in Boston's 11-4 victory July 10.
"That's not the way I saw it going in my head," Workman told the team's official website after his debut.
The right-hander will be making his third career start Tuesday after giving up two runs in six innings of a 3-0 loss to Tampa Bay on July 22. He'll be opposed by Joe Saunders, who is looking to bounce back from a loss of his own.
Saunders (9-9, 4.48) had won his previous four starts while posting a 1.73 ERA before allowing six runs - five earned - in 4 2-3 innings of Wednesday's 10-1 loss to Cleveland.
"Just one of those days," Saunders said.
The left-hander went 0-4 with an 11.25 ERA in his first five road starts this season, but he's gone 4-1 with a 1.76 ERA in his last six outings outside of Seattle. His last start against Boston also went well as he allowed three runs in 7 1-3 innings of a 6-3 win Sept. 30 while pitching for Baltimore.
Saunders will be looking to help the Mariners (50-55) win their fifth straight road game after they completed a 4-3 homestand with Sunday's 6-4 win over Minnesota.
Shortstop Brad Miller and second baseman Nick Franklin, both rookies, had solid efforts. Miller, batting leadoff, went 2 for 3 with a walk, and Franklin, the No. 2 hitter, went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer in the fourth and a solo shot in the seventh.
"They spark us at the top of the order," said acting manager Robby Thompson, who has guided the team the last seven games while Eric Wedge recovers from a mild stroke. "It's not often you see a couple guys come up from Triple-A and hit 1-2 in the order in a short period of time."
Seattle activated Michael Morse from his month-plus stay on the disabled list Monday while also designating veteran outfielder Jason Bay for assignment. Morse, who was battling a strained right quad, could be in the lineup Tuesday.
