KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN DIEGO: HITTING: This was by far the worst lineup in the National League in runs (3.66 per game), HR (91), and OPS (.653). 1B JESUS GUZMAN had 44 RBI in just 247 at-bats thanks to a 1.094 OPS with RISP. 1B YONDER ALONSO, the key piece of the Mat Latos trade, will play first every day, moving Guzman to a back-up role. OF CAMERON MAYBIN used his speed to steal 40 bases and score 82 runs. OF CARLOS QUENTIN was acquired from the White Sox and will provide much-needed power in the middle of the batting order when he returns to the field sometime in late April/early May after having knee surgery. Slugger KYLE BLANKS will fill the void. In 420 career at-bats, he has 20 homers, but also has a .219 BA and 152 strikeouts. SS JASON BARTLETT had a disappointing first season in San Diego, hitting only two home runs in 554 at-bats and posting a pathetic .615 OPS as the team's No. 2 hitter in the lineup. Mediocre OF WILL VENABLE (.705 OPS) would not start for any other team in the majors. 3B CHASE HEADLEY batted .289 with a .374 OBP, but failed to provide any power from the three-hole. Oft-injured C NICK HUNDLEY had an .824 OPS and 9 HR in half a season. SS ORLANDO HUDSON batted just .246 with 92 strikeouts and just 31 walks.
STARTING PITCHING: This young staff finished sixth in the majors with a 3.62 ERA. TIM STAUFFER struggled to pitch outside of spacious Petco Park, posting a 4.95 ERA and 1.39 WHIP on the road (2.57 ERA, 1.13 WHIP at home). Two starters both underwent surgery on their throwing shoulders last summer, but are expected to be ready for the start of the season. Lefty CLAYTON RICHARD had just 53 K and 38 BB in 99.2 innings, but he posted a strong 2.30 ERA and 1.11 WHIP at home last year. The 2011 campaign was the year to judge whether EDINSON VOLQUEZ was all the way back from major arm surgery. Well, the jury's in and the verdict isn't kind. The move to San Diego can only cure so much. Right-hander DUSTIN MOSELEY enjoyed his first season in the NL, posting career-best marks in ERA (3.30) and WHIP (1.28). But like Richard, his 64 K and 36 BB in 120 innings were unimpressive. CORY LUEBKE began 2011 in the bullpen, but was moved the rotation, which is where he'll stay in 2012. In 17 starts last year, he shined with a 3.31 ERA and 111 K in 100.2 IP.
RELIEF PITCHING: For the first time since 2008, somebody other than Heath Bell will close games for the Padres. HUSTON STREET will certainly benefit from the move to hitter haven Coors Field to pitcher-friendly Petco Park. Street had a 4.20 home ERA in three seasons in Colorado, while posting a stellar 2.59 ERA on the road. If Street gets hurt, the two leading candidates for the closer role are LUKE GREGERSON and ERNESTO FRIERI. Gregerson is the more consistent pitcher of the two, but Frieri throws harder than Gregerson and has a stellar 11.1 strikeout rate in his three-year career.
BOSTON: HITTING: OF JACOBY ELLSBURY's 2011 breakout was no fluke. He has real power to complement his elite speed. 2B DUSTIN PEDROIA bounced back from a slow start to finish with career highs in HR and RBI. He benefits from hitting behind Ellsbury. 3B KEVIN YOUKILIS is a huge injury risk. His best seasons are behind him. 1B ADRIAN GONZALEZ wasted no time winning over Boston fans last year, and should hit even more HR in 2012. DH DAVID ORTIZ has put together two straight impressive years after being left for dead in 2009. 2011 Super Bust OF CARL CRAWFORD will bounce back, just not as much as most experts think. Most of the catcher duties will go to C JARROD SALTALAMACCHIA, with C KELLY SHOPPACH getting ABs against lefties. Right field will be filled by former Giants playoff hero CODY ROSS. SS NICK PUNTO replaces Marco Scutaro, who is now in Colorado. 3B MIKE AVILES is a solid hitter with the defensive flexibility to end up with semi-regular ABs.
STARTING PITCHING: JON LESTER seems to have leveled off as a very good pitcher instead of ascending into an elite class. He lost some speed on his pitches and got hit a little harder in 2011. Coming off the best season of his up-and-down career, JOSH BECKETT's numbers are bound to regress a bit in 2012. Back problems limited CLAY BUCHHOLZ last season, and he lost some of the zip on his fastball. He'll tally a low ERA and 15+ wins if he can stay healthy. ALFREDO ACEVES was outstanding out of the bullpen last year, and will compete for a rotation spot this year. He was a starter for years in the Mexican League and the minors. Former setup man DANIEL BARD is being converted to a starter, but he may wind up back in the bullpen later on. After Tommy John surgeries, DAISUKE MATSUZAKA is due to return around July, while JOHN LACKEY won't be back until 2013.
RELIEF PITCHING: ANDREW BAILEY was a acquired from Oakland in December for a heap of prospects. He's one of the best closers in baseball, and may even be an upgrade from departed Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth. Time will tell how he'll handle the increased scrutiny of playing in Boston. Coming over in a trade for infielder Jed Lowrie, MARK MELANCON was excellent as a closer last season in Houston and should be Bailey's main set-up man in the eighth inning. BOBBY JENKS has ninth-inning experience, but he will be out at least two months coming off a pulmonary embolism.

*Padres-Red Sox Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

San Diego (40-43) at Boston (50-34), 7:10 p.m. EDT

Just when Jon Lester had seemingly put an end to his struggles, he ran into an injury scare in the middle of a strong outing. Fortunately for both he and the Boston Red Sox, the ailment wasn't serious and won't keep him from the mound Wednesday night.

The left-hander hopes to sustain the improvement from his last start as he takes on the San Diego Padres at Fenway Park.

Lester (8-4, 4.61 ERA) started off 6-0 through his first nine outings, then fell into a seven-start slump that saw him go 1-4 with a 7.30 ERA, lasting more than six innings only twice.

He appeared to right himself Thursday against Toronto, yielding two runs and three hits in the first seven innings and retiring the first 10 batters he faced. But he gave up back-to-back singles to begin the eighth and then was caught in a 3-0 count in the next at-bat, prompting manager John Farrell to remove him from the game after Lester aggravated his hip.

The two-time All-Star has since been evaluated and appears to be good to go for Wednesday. One could understand Farrell's caution, considering the club has already been without Clay Buchholz since June 8.

"Based on all the maintenance work he (Lester) currently does, and the strength exams that he goes through, the range of motion is good," Farrell told the team's official website. "There's nothing that is glaring."

Home runs were an issue for Lester during his run of bad starts, as he yielded nine in 40 2-3 innings after allowing four through his first 59 2-3 innings. He held the Blue Jays homerless.

The Padres have batted .220 during a 2-8 stretch and will try to avoid matching a season-high five-game skid.

Boston (51-34) has just one homer during its 6-1 run, but has found a way to produce in other ways, such as Brandon Snyder's bases-clearing double in the fourth inning of a 4-1 win over San Diego (40-44) in Tuesday's opener.

The Red Sox are averaging 5.9 runs and 11.7 hits over their last seven contests.

Jacoby Ellsbury was 2 for 4 Tuesday to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. He's 21 for 51 (.412) during the run and has also hit safely in all seven of his interleague contests this season, going 15 for 31 (.484) with five doubles.

Looking to slow down Boston's offense will be Edinson Volquez (6-6, 5.50). Volquez has had his share of struggles but is 2-1 with a 3.04 ERA over his last four outings, striking out 30 in 23 2-3 innings while allowing 21 hits. He struck out eight and gave up two runs over six innings in a 9-2 win at Miami on Friday.

"I felt great. Everything was working tonight," said Volquez, who walked one after matching a career high with seven in his previous start. "I just want to be aggressive in the strike zone, not walk too many hitters and stay in the game six or seven innings."

He left without a decision in his only start against Boston, giving up three runs - two earned - over seven innings for Cincinnati on June 14, 2008.

Wednesday marks Lester's first interleague start this season. He's 11-5 with a 3.13 ERA in 21 career starts versus NL teams.
