KEY GAME INFORMATION
HOUSTON: HITTING: This season will mark Houston's final year in the National League. Look away, children, as the Astros launch into what is sure to be the crappiest victory lap in baseball history. Tiny 2B JOSE ALTUVE's jump from High-A to MLB starter says more about Houston's pitiful state than anything. He belongs in Triple-A. CHRIS JOHNSON won the starting 3B job as JIMMY PAREDES was optioned to Triple-A. Johnson was thought to have 25-homer power, but last year he slugged just .378. 1B CARLOS LEE is in the twilight of a very productive career. Backup 1B BRETT WALLACE seems to be in the twilight of an unproductive one. OF BRIAN BOGUSEVIC has a low ceiling. But he's one of only a few recent draft picks who will even contribute. OF J.D. MARTINEZ doesn't blame you if you haven't heard of him, but he's the team's best player who hits third in the lineup. SS JED LOWRIE was a nice little pickup for a mid-tier closer. But his platoon split is intense. C JASON CASTRO will probably play ahead of CHRIS SNYDER. OF JORDAN SCHAFER has yet to put things together; but he'll be starting in center on Opening Day. Fourth OF J.B. SHUCK is only 24, but doesn't have a whole lot of upside.
STARTING PITCHING: WANDY RODRIGUEZ has been a durable, above-average starter for five years, yet every season his real-world team limits his wins. He'll be traded at some point this year. Don't shortchange BUD NORRIS. He's an underrated source of strikeouts, and has improved his command. J.A. HAPP really needs to cut down on his walk total. JORDAN LYLES couldn't legally drink until the second-to-last week of the season. He's in the big leagues way too soon. He's yet another young Astro who isn't terrible, but won't ever set the world on fire. KYLE WEILAND came from Boston with Jed Lowrie and should earn the final spot in the rotation. Texas-bred fireballer JARRED COSART, 21, is a legitimately exciting (but risky) prospect who Houston will probably rush up to the majors at some point this year.
RELIEF PITCHING: BRETT MYERS flummoxed the Astros' front office with a stinker of a season. He's probably closer to that pitcher than to the one who posted a career-best 3.14 ERA in 2010 at age 29, but he'll move the bullpen this year to get the rare opportunities to close out a game when this awful team is actually leading. WILTON LOPEZ was good in 2011, but was much better the previous season, when he may have been the most underrated reliever in the National League. Houston will go with him in the ninth if they want Myers to return to the rotation. BRANDON LYON has seen better days. He bombed early, then was shut down for good with a bicep injury. He intimidates nobody now.
BOSTON: HITTING: OF JACOBY ELLSBURY's 2011 breakout was no fluke. He has real power to complement his elite speed. 2B DUSTIN PEDROIA bounced back from a slow start to finish with career highs in HR and RBI. He benefits from hitting behind Ellsbury. 3B KEVIN YOUKILIS is a huge injury risk. His best seasons are behind him. 1B ADRIAN GONZALEZ wasted no time winning over Boston fans last year, and should hit even more HR in 2012. DH DAVID ORTIZ has put together two straight impressive years after being left for dead in 2009. 2011 Super Bust OF CARL CRAWFORD will bounce back, just not as much as most experts think. Most of the catcher duties will go to C JARROD SALTALAMACCHIA, with C KELLY SHOPPACH getting ABs against lefties. Right field will be filled by former Giants playoff hero CODY ROSS. SS NICK PUNTO replaces Marco Scutaro, who is now in Colorado. 3B MIKE AVILES is a solid hitter with the defensive flexibility to end up with semi-regular ABs.
STARTING PITCHING: JON LESTER seems to have leveled off as a very good pitcher instead of ascending into an elite class. He lost some speed on his pitches and got hit a little harder in 2011. Coming off the best season of his up-and-down career, JOSH BECKETT's numbers are bound to regress a bit in 2012. Back problems limited CLAY BUCHHOLZ last season, and he lost some of the zip on his fastball. He'll tally a low ERA and 15+ wins if he can stay healthy. ALFREDO ACEVES was outstanding out of the bullpen last year, and will compete for a rotation spot this year. He was a starter for years in the Mexican League and the minors. Former setup man DANIEL BARD is being converted to a starter, but he may wind up back in the bullpen later on. After Tommy John surgeries, DAISUKE MATSUZAKA is due to return around July, while JOHN LACKEY won't be back until 2013.
RELIEF PITCHING: ANDREW BAILEY was a acquired from Oakland in December for a heap of prospects. He's one of the best closers in baseball, and may even be an upgrade from departed Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth. Time will tell how he'll handle the increased scrutiny of playing in Boston. Coming over in a trade for infielder Jed Lowrie, MARK MELANCON was excellent as a closer last season in Houston and should be Bailey's main set-up man in the eighth inning. BOBBY JENKS has ninth-inning experience, but he will be out at least two months coming off a pulmonary embolism.

*Astros-Red Sox Preview* ========================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer

Houston (6-14) at Boston (13-7), 6:35 p.m. EDT

The Boston Red Sox's starting rotation has one of the best ERAs in the AL, thanks in large part to Clay Buchholz's stellar performances.

Buchholz looks to win five straight starts for the second time in his career as Boston opens a four-game series against the visiting Houston Astros on Thursday night.

The Red Sox's starting staff has a solid 3.14 ERA after Jon Lester helped Boston (14-7) earn a 6-5 win over Oakland on Wednesday. The team had dropped three of its previous five to open a 10-game homestand.

David Ortiz went 2 for 4 with an RBI and is 8 for 16 since returning to the lineup Saturday for the first time since last August. He missed 71 of the final 72 games last season and all of spring training's with an Achilles tendon injury.

"Right now I'm not where I want to be, so I'm not trying to juice some balls," Ortiz said. "I'm trying to stay with what they give me."

Buchholz (4-0, 0.90 ERA) hopes to add another outstanding performance to his list in his first career start against Houston. He had a 22-inning scoreless streak before giving up a run in the fifth inning of Saturday's 4-3 win over Kansas City, and ended up allowing two runs while striking out six in eight innings.

The only time he won five consecutive starts came from May 14-June 4, 2010.

"Obviously when the numbers are good that makes you feel a little bit better," said Buchholz, who has 29 strikeouts in 30 innings. "I feel like I've done the work in between my starts and everything is going really good right now."

Houston starter Philip Humber, meanwhile, is coming off one of the worst performances of his career.

Humber (0-4, 6.63) gave up eight runs and eight hits in just one-third of an inning of a 19-6 loss to Cleveland on Saturday. He had a 2.89 ERA over his first three outings but received one total run of support and suffered the loss in each.

"It's not fun," Humber told the team's official website. "It's not what you planned on and not what you worked for. It's just one of those nights. I'll get them next time."

The right-hander has gone 4-9 with a 7.26 ERA in 18 starts since throwing a perfect game for the Chicago White Sox against Seattle on April 21, 2012 - a stretch that began when he gave up a career-worst nine runs in a loss to Boston on April 26.

Humber is 2-2 with a 7.33 ERA in four career starts versus the Red Sox, though he allowed two runs in six innings in a 7-5 victory July 17 in his most recent outing against them.

The Astros (7-14) hope their offense is beginning to come around after beating Seattle 10-3 on Wednesday at home, as Chris Carter, Ronny Cedeno and Brandon Laird homered. They're averaging 6.3 runs while going 4-2 versus the Mariners but just 3.3 in going 3-12 against everyone else.

Robbie Grossman had two doubles in his major league debut replacing Justin Maxwell, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left hand sustained after being hit by a pitch Tuesday.

"He adds a dynamic to our club, some more speed at the top of the lineup and a guy that gets on base," manager Bo Porter said.

Boston has won seven of the nine all-time meetings with Houston, including a three-game sweep June 13-15, 2003, in the only matchups at Fenway Park.
