PREVIEW
Struggling O's ready for visit from White Sox

The Baltimore Orioles will welcome visiting Chicago on Monday, taking on a White Sox team that's in a similar place right now -- struggling.

Baltimore was swept at home by the Twins over the weekend, while the White Sox have lost three of their last four. Both teams are in rebuilding mode, and the past few days have not been kind to either club.

The Orioles lost both games in Saturday's doubleheader before a late rally fell short in a 4-3 loss on Sunday. Baltimore loaded the bases with two outs, and pinch-hitter Pedro Severino hit a fly ball to right that Jake Cave briefly lost in the sun. But Cave then found it and made the catch to complete the Twins' sweep.

The loss dropped the Orioles to 1-9 at home -- they're 7-6 on the road -- but manager Brandon Hyde told the media after Sunday's game that he likes the way his young team keeps battling.

"I'm proud of how we play," he said. "I think that we are getting everything we have out of our guys, and we're going to continue to try to get better every single day."

The bad news from Sunday is the Orioles may have lost outfielder Dwight Smith Jr., one of their early-season surprises. He drove in two runs Sunday and is batting .289 this season, but left after the sixth with right quadriceps tightness. His status is not yet known.

"I've been dealing with it the last week, week-and-a-half," Smith told the Baltimore Sun after the game. "I've been playing through it."

The White Sox are coming in after dropping two of three at Detroit. Saturday's game was rained out.

In Sunday's game, Chicago's Tim Anderson came back after sitting out one game due to a suspension for an incident against the Royals on Wednesday. Anderson went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

He's still leading the American League with a .418 batting average and, of course, has been a big plus for the young Chicago team on offense.

Anderson shrugged off the suspension when speaking to the media in Detroit on Friday.

"It is what it is; I'll serve my suspension," Anderson said. "Be a good day to get some rest, so I'm going to go back to the hotel, watch these guys ball out, and I'll be ready."

The Tigers edged the White Sox 4-3 on Sunday. That wasted a strong start from Chicago's Reynaldo Lopez, who gave up three runs (two earned) in six innings and struck out eight.

David Hess (1-3, 5.57) will start for Baltimore versus Manny Banuelos (1-0, 3.48) on Monday. Hess has struggled lately, giving up seven homers in 21 innings already this season.

He allowed six runs (including three homers) in two-plus innings on April 17 against the Rays. In his only career start against the White Sox, Hess allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Banuelos will be making his first start of the season after pitching four times in relief. His longest stint has been 3 1/3 innings, and it will be his first career appearance versus the Orioles.

In fact, this will be Banuelos' first start in the majors since Sept. 6, 2015 when pitching with the Braves. He took the loss after lasting just two innings versus Washington. That was his last game in the majors until this year.

The Orioles made a few roster moves before Sunday's series finale with Minnesota, designating right-hander Mike Wright for assignment while selecting the contract of right-hander Gabriel Ynoa from Triple-A Norfolk.
