Projected lineup: 3B Yunel Escobar (.304, 5 HR, 39 RBI), RF Kole Calhoun (.271, 18, 75), CF Mike Trout (.315, 29, 100, 30 SB), DH Albert Pujols (.268, 31, 119), 1B C.J. Rotation: RH Garrett Richards (1-3, 2.34 in six starts), RH Matt Shoemaker (9-13, 3.88), LH Tyler Skaggs (3-4, 4.17), RH Ricky Nolasco (8-14, 4.42 with Twins and Angels), RH Jesse Chavez (2-2, 4.43 with Blue Jays and Dodgers) or RH Bud Norris (6-10, 5.10 for Braves and Dodgers)
Key relievers: RH Huston Street (3-2, 6.45, 9/12 SV), RH Cam Bedrosian (2-0, 1.12), RH Andrew Bailey (3-1, 5.36 6/7 SV for Phillies and Angels), RH J.C. Ramirez (2-1, 2.91), LH Jose Alvarez (1-3, 3.45), RH Austin Adams (0-0, 9.82 with Indians), RH Yusmeiro Petit (3-5, 4.30 with Nationals), RH Mike Morin (2-2, 4.37)
Hot spots: First base and fifth starter. Pujols started 23 games at first base last year, and will likely play fewer this year after offseason plantar fascia surgery. For now, Pujols is the primary DH, Cron is the first baseman, and Valbuena will begin the season on the DL with a strained hamstring. One problem: neither Cron (.698 OPS) nor Valbuena (.666) could hit lefties last year. The top candidates for fifth starter are similarly flawed. Chavez and Norris finished last season as relievers. Alex Meyer has six major league starts to his name. The Angels might need all of them at points in 2017.
Outlook: It's hard to be too optimistic about a team that's made one playoff appearance in seven years. Yet it's hard to be too pessimistic considering the hard-luck injuries that decimated the Angels in 2016, particularly on the pitching side. Still, 2017 figures to be a transition year. The back of the rotation is a patch job until Tommy John patients Andrew Heaney and Nick Tropeano return from rehab. The Angels will gain some financial freedom after the season, when Josh Hamilton finally comes off the books. Any positive momentum in the meantime would make Anaheim a more attractive destination for free agents. Getting back above .500 would be a realistic step in that direction; anything beyond that is a bonus | | BALTIMORE: 2016: 89-73, second place
Manager: Buck Showalter (eighth season)
Who's new? C Welington Castillo, OF Seth Smith, OF Craig Gentry, OF Michael Bourn, LHP Vidal Nuno
Who's gone? C Matt Wieters, OF Nolan Reimold, INF/OF Steve Pearce, RHP Vance Worley, RHP Odrisamer Despaigne, LHP T.J. McFarland, LHP Brian Duensing, RHP Tommy Hunter
Projected lineup: LF Hyun-Soo Kim (.302, 6 HR, 22 RBI), CF Adam Jones (.265, 29, 83), 3B Manny Machado (.294, 37, 96), 1B Chris Davis (.221, 38, 84), DH Mark Trumbo (.256, 47, 108), RF Seth Smith (.249, 16, 63 with Mariners), 2B Jonathan Schoop (.267, 25, 82), C Welington Castillo (.264, 14, 68 with Diamondbacks), SS J.J. Hardy (.269, 9, 48)
Rotation: RH Kevin Gausman (9-12, 3.61 ERA), RH Dylan Bundy (10-6, 4.02), LH Wade Miley (9-13, 5.37), RH Ubaldo Jimenez (8-12, 5.44), RH Mike Wright (3-4, 5.79) or Chris Lee (5-0, 2.98 at Double-A) or Gabriel Ynoa (1-0, 6.38 with Mets) or Tyler Wilson (4-6, 5.27) or Jayson Aquino (0-0, 0.00 in three games)
Key relievers: LH Zach Britton (2-1, 0.54, 47/47 SV), RH Brad Brach (10-4, 2.05), RH Darren O'Day (3-1, 3.77), RH Mychal Givens (8-2, 3.13), LH Donnie Hart (0-0, 0.49), LH Vidal Nuno (1-1, 3.53 with Mariners)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and bullpen. A shoulder injury in camp left 16-game winner Chris Tillman in doubt for opening day. That opened the floodgates for a pair of competitions that are somewhat intertwined, since the Orioles value long relievers more than perhaps any team. Wright and Wilson, who shuttled between the bullpen and the rotation last season, are the top candidates for the final rotation job. Aquino is a candidate to start or relieve. Logan Verrett, Richard Bleier and Zach Stewart are all potential long men. Keep an eye on Lee, a 24-year-old lefty who missed most of last season with a lat strain.
Outlook: Boston landed the biggest trade chip of the winter and Baltimore couldn't (or didn't try to) acquire the number-one starter it badly needed. When the dust settled, the Orioles look like another 80-something win team that will lean on its organizational depth to overachieve. Machado is already one of the five best players in the game, and at 24 his prime years might still lie ahead. Only three teams in history have had three 40-home run hitters, but Machado, Davis and Trumbo are capable of making it four. Expect some high-scoring games: the Orioles' outfield earned low marks on defense last year, while their starting rotation is iffy at best. Bridging the gap to closer Britton will be key. |
| | Orioles host Angels in key AL wild-card series
BALTIMORE -- If the Baltimore Orioles are hoping to make a big move in the American League wild card race, they could have a chance to do so starting Friday against the Los Angeles Angels. That is the opener of a three-game series at Camden Yards as the Orioles (59-62) play 16 of their next 19 games at home, where the team has found much more success than away from Baltimore. The Orioles are 35-23 at home and 24-39 on the road. Baltimore is coming off a 4-6 West Coast trip against the Angels, Oakland and Seattle, and the Orioles are glad to be returning to Camden Yards only three games out of the second wild-card spot. "We're headed back to Baltimore," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday after a 7-6 loss in Seattle. "It's been a long trip, and we have a chance to roll the dice the last six weeks, and that's what we hope to do -- compete with a chance to play in October. We're still engaged in it." The wild-card race is extremely tight in the American League. The New York Yankees and Angels hold the two wild-card spots, with seven teams within three games of the Angels (62-59) for the last spot. "You can put as much importance on (the Baltimore series) as you want," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Wednesday after a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals. "We need to win. We need to play our game every night." The Angels took two of three from the Orioles when the teams met in Anaheim last week. Jeremy Hellickson (7-7, 4.70 ERA) will start for the Orioles on Friday, and Andrew Heaney, who had Tommy John surgery in July 2016, will make his season debut for the Angels. Hellickson has eaten up some innings and been effective at times since the Orioles acquired him from the Philadelphia Phillies last month, but he is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts with Baltimore. He has a 3-4 record with a 3.02 ERA in eight games (seven starts) vs. the Angels. Heaney pitched in only one game last year before the injury. On his rehab work in 2017, Heaney went 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA in three starts with Triple-A Salt Lake. Scioscia is very pleased to see 26-year-old left-hander returning. "It is a remarkable recovery he went through with his rehab," Scioscia said. "It was so seamless; he feels terrific. You pay close attention to how he is feeling and how he is throwing. We are excited to give him the ball." In his only appearance vs. Baltimore, in 2015, Heaney allowed four runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Angels will need to make a move on their 25-man roster to open a spot for Heaney. Baltimore made a few roster moves Thursday. They reinstated outfielder Anthony Santander (a Rule 5 pick) from the 60-day disabled list. He had been on the DL all season with a right forearm strain. The Orioles also reinstated utility infielder Ryan Flaherty (right shoulder strain) from the 60-day DL. To open spots for those two, the Orioles optioned outfielder Joey Rickard to Triple-A Norfolk, and infielder Ruben Tejada cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Norfolk. |
