Manager: A.J. Hinch (third season)
Who's new? RF Josh Reddick, CF Carlos Beltran, LF Nori Aoki, C Brian McCann, RHP Charlie Morton
Who's gone? C Jason Castro, INF Luis Valbuena, OF Colby Rasmus, RHP Doug Fister
Projected lineup: CF George Springer (.261, 29 HR, 82 RBI), 2B Jose Altuve (.338, 24, 96, 30 SB), SS Carlos Correa (.274, 20, 96, 13 SB), DH Carlos Beltran (.295, 29, 93 with Yankees and Rangers), C Brian McCann (.242, 20, 58 with Yankees) or Evan Gattis (.251, 32, 72), 3B Alex Bregman (.264, 8, 34 in 49 games), RF Josh Reddick (.281, 10, 37 with A's and Dodgers), 1B Yulieski Gurriel (.262, 3, 15), LF Nori Aoki (.283, 4, 28 with Mariners)
Rotation: LH Dallas Keuchel (9-12, 4.55 ERA), RH Collin McHugh (13-10, 4.34), RH Mike Fiers (11-8, 4.48), RH Lance McCullers (6-5, 3.22), RH Charlie Morton (1-1, 4.15 in four games with Phillies)
Key relievers: RH Ken Giles (2-5, 4.11, 15/20 SV), RH Luke Gregerson (4-3, 3.28, 15/21 SV), RH Will Harris (1-2, 2.25, 12/15 SV), RH Chris Devenski (4-4, 2.16), LH Tony Sipp (1-2, 4.95), RH Michael Feliz (8-1, 4.43)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and catcher. Hamstring issues limited 33-year-old Morton to four starts with the Phillies last season. That didn't stop the Astros from signing him to a two-year contract worth at least $14 million. Now, veteran Fiers and 24-year-old Joe Musgrove are on the bubble for the fifth starter's job. McCann and Gattis give the Astros a pair of veteran catchers with slugging potential. McCann has fewer weaknesses behind the plate; Gattis is the better all-around hitter. With Beltran aboard as the primary designated hitter, McCann and Gattis won't both be in the lineup on most nights.
Outlook: After slipping to third place in the AL West last year, the Astros' front office decided to double down on dingers rather than upgrade a rotation that lacks a true ace. The result: A lineup with eight potential 20-home run hitters, including possible MVP candidates in Altuve and Correa. Everyone returns from an impressive young bullpen with high strikeout potential. If the Astros are in contention by the trade deadline, the front office should have the financial flexibility to add a front-line starter. Then again, if Dallas Keuchel looks like the pitcher who won a Cy Young Award in 2015, Houston might not have a problem. | | BALTIMORE: 2016: 89-73, second place
Manager: Buck Showalter (eighth season)
Who's new? C Welington Castillo, OF Seth Smith, OF Craig Gentry, OF Michael Bourn, LHP Vidal Nuno
Who's gone? C Matt Wieters, OF Nolan Reimold, INF/OF Steve Pearce, RHP Vance Worley, RHP Odrisamer Despaigne, LHP T.J. McFarland, LHP Brian Duensing, RHP Tommy Hunter
Projected lineup: LF Hyun-Soo Kim (.302, 6 HR, 22 RBI), CF Adam Jones (.265, 29, 83), 3B Manny Machado (.294, 37, 96), 1B Chris Davis (.221, 38, 84), DH Mark Trumbo (.256, 47, 108), RF Seth Smith (.249, 16, 63 with Mariners), 2B Jonathan Schoop (.267, 25, 82), C Welington Castillo (.264, 14, 68 with Diamondbacks), SS J.J. Hardy (.269, 9, 48)
Rotation: RH Kevin Gausman (9-12, 3.61 ERA), RH Dylan Bundy (10-6, 4.02), LH Wade Miley (9-13, 5.37), RH Ubaldo Jimenez (8-12, 5.44), RH Mike Wright (3-4, 5.79) or Chris Lee (5-0, 2.98 at Double-A) or Gabriel Ynoa (1-0, 6.38 with Mets) or Tyler Wilson (4-6, 5.27) or Jayson Aquino (0-0, 0.00 in three games)
Key relievers: LH Zach Britton (2-1, 0.54, 47/47 SV), RH Brad Brach (10-4, 2.05), RH Darren O'Day (3-1, 3.77), RH Mychal Givens (8-2, 3.13), LH Donnie Hart (0-0, 0.49), LH Vidal Nuno (1-1, 3.53 with Mariners)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and bullpen. A shoulder injury in camp left 16-game winner Chris Tillman in doubt for opening day. That opened the floodgates for a pair of competitions that are somewhat intertwined, since the Orioles value long relievers more than perhaps any team. Wright and Wilson, who shuttled between the bullpen and the rotation last season, are the top candidates for the final rotation job. Aquino is a candidate to start or relieve. Logan Verrett, Richard Bleier and Zach Stewart are all potential long men. Keep an eye on Lee, a 24-year-old lefty who missed most of last season with a lat strain.
Outlook: Boston landed the biggest trade chip of the winter and Baltimore couldn't (or didn't try to) acquire the number-one starter it badly needed. When the dust settled, the Orioles look like another 80-something win team that will lean on its organizational depth to overachieve. Machado is already one of the five best players in the game, and at 24 his prime years might still lie ahead. Only three teams in history have had three 40-home run hitters, but Machado, Davis and Trumbo are capable of making it four. Expect some high-scoring games: the Orioles' outfield earned low marks on defense last year, while their starting rotation is iffy at best. Bridging the gap to closer Britton will be key. |
| | McHugh to make first start of season as Astros face Orioles
BALTIMORE -- Elbow issues have sidelined Houston right-hander Collin McHugh all season, but he will make his first start and appearance of 2017 on Saturday when the Astros take on the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. McHugh has been out the entire season because of an impingement in his right elbow. He is 1-0 with a 6.18 ERA against the Orioles and has pitched in five games against them, all starts. Last season, McHugh went 13-10 with a 4.34 ERA after winning 19 games the year before. He will go against Baltimore right-hander Chris Tillman (1-5, 7.20), coming off his best effort of the season in a no-decision against the Rangers this past Monday. "Honest, (I'm happy) just being able to get out and do what I do," McHugh said. "It's what I'm here to do, and it's what I do as a career. I mean, you're sitting and you're watching for so long and rehabbing and trying everything you can to get back and just to be able to come out and do your job feels good." The team is sending down pitcher Reymin Gudyan to Triple-A Fresno to open a roster spot for McHugh. The Astros (64-32) will be trying to win a second straight game. They edged the Orioles 8-7 on Friday night in the series opener, ending a four-game winning streak for Baltimore (46-50). Tillman missed the first month of the season with shoulder bursitis and has never become the pitcher he has been for the Orioles throughout his career. He did, however, show signs of his old self when holding Texas to one run and two hits in six innings in that last start. Tillman has a 2-3 record and a 3.89 career ERA against the Astros. Astros manager A.J. Hinch said Dallas Keuchel will pitch in Lowell (Mass.) for Houston's Tri-City team (Class A short-season New York-Penn) on a rehab assignment in the next few days. "It's a little rare for guys to rehab at that level but given we were going to be in the Northeast here in Baltimore and go to Philly after that, it was certainly the most convenient," Hinch said. "I would expect, closer to, what can simulate a five-inning game." Hinch said the left-hander feels good and "is itching" to return. The manager added that it's possible Keuchel could pitch on this road trip if all goes well. Keuchel is 9-0 with a 1.67 ERA this season but last pitched on June 2 and went on the disabled list on June 8. Hinch also said Brad Peacock (Monday), Charlie Morton (Tuesday) and Mike Fiers (Wednesday, the winner of the series opener with the Orioles) will be the starters in the three-game interleague series in Philadelphia after Houston leaves Baltimore. Also, bench coach Alex Cora left the team as he became the father of twins. Hinch said Cora should return during the Philadelphia series. The Astros banged out 16 hits in the first game and has a major league-best .290 team batting average. This team can hit, and the Orioles know it. "They're the best team in the American League right now," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "They're very similar to the Cubs, very athletic. It's a good club. You have to pitch well." Showalter also said utility man Ryan Flaherty, now on the 60-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain, could go out on rehab later next week if he keeps progressing well. The Orioles also can use Flaherty as an emergency catcher as Showalter enjoys having him on the bench because he can play so many roles. |
