Key relievers: RH Brandon Kintzler (0-2, 3.15, 17/20 saves), RH Matt Belisle (0-0, 1.76 in 40 games for Nationals), RH Ryan Pressly (6-7, 3.70, 1 save in 72 games), LH Taylor Rogers (3-1, 3.96, 64 Ks in 57 games), LH Craig Breslow (0-2, 4.50 in 15 games for Marlins). Hot Spot: Starting Rotation. The resuscitation of a team with the worst record in the majors last season must begin with starting pitching that ranked 30th out of 30 in wins (37), ERA (5.39) and strikeouts (655). Hughes, Santiago, Gibson and Berrios will all be counted on to make 2016 the aberration and not the standard. Adding Castro, who has a strong reputation for game calling and pitch framing, probably can't hurt. There's enough depth in the group at least to give the Twins a chance to return to respectability as new baseball chief Derek Falvey continues to try to revamp organizational philosophy and process for the long term. The bullpen appears more vulnerable than the rotation, despite being bolstered by the addition of the veteran Belisle. Three-time All-Star closer Glen Perkins is still working his way back from surgery last year to repair a torn labrum and will likely land on the disabled list to start the season. Kintzler fared well in his place, but doesn't have a track record.
Outlook: The Twins ranked a respectable sixth in the American League in total bases and eighth in OPS despite their abysmal record last year. Buxton's sparkling September, following a second straight frustrating summer, restored his and the club's confidence in the 2012 second overall draft pick. Dozier probably hit his power ceiling in 2016, but if Buxton and Sano can strike out less and get on base more there's the potential in place for a productive offense. Vargas hit his way back into contention for the DH spot with a decent finish to 2016, but the pressure is on him to prove he's worth a spot in the lineup with a strong performance this spring by Park, who struggled badly to adjust to major league pitching in his arrival from South Korea last year.
BALTIMORE: 2016: 89-73, second place
Manager: Buck Showalter (eighth season)
Who's new? C Welington Castillo, OF Seth Smith, OF Craig Gentry, OF Michael Bourn, LHP Vidal Nuno
Who's gone? C Matt Wieters, OF Nolan Reimold, INF/OF Steve Pearce, RHP Vance Worley, RHP Odrisamer Despaigne, LHP T.J. McFarland, LHP Brian Duensing, RHP Tommy Hunter
Projected lineup: LF Hyun-Soo Kim (.302, 6 HR, 22 RBI), CF Adam Jones (.265, 29, 83), 3B Manny Machado (.294, 37, 96), 1B Chris Davis (.221, 38, 84), DH Mark Trumbo (.256, 47, 108), RF Seth Smith (.249, 16, 63 with Mariners), 2B Jonathan Schoop (.267, 25, 82), C Welington Castillo (.264, 14, 68 with Diamondbacks), SS J.J. Hardy (.269, 9, 48)
Rotation: RH Kevin Gausman (9-12, 3.61 ERA), RH Dylan Bundy (10-6, 4.02), LH Wade Miley (9-13, 5.37), RH Ubaldo Jimenez (8-12, 5.44), RH Mike Wright (3-4, 5.79) or Chris Lee (5-0, 2.98 at Double-A) or Gabriel Ynoa (1-0, 6.38 with Mets) or Tyler Wilson (4-6, 5.27) or Jayson Aquino (0-0, 0.00 in three games)
Key relievers: LH Zach Britton (2-1, 0.54, 47/47 SV), RH Brad Brach (10-4, 2.05), RH Darren O'Day (3-1, 3.77), RH Mychal Givens (8-2, 3.13), LH Donnie Hart (0-0, 0.49), LH Vidal Nuno (1-1, 3.53 with Mariners)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and bullpen. A shoulder injury in camp left 16-game winner Chris Tillman in doubt for opening day. That opened the floodgates for a pair of competitions that are somewhat intertwined, since the Orioles value long relievers more than perhaps any team. Wright and Wilson, who shuttled between the bullpen and the rotation last season, are the top candidates for the final rotation job. Aquino is a candidate to start or relieve. Logan Verrett, Richard Bleier and Zach Stewart are all potential long men. Keep an eye on Lee, a 24-year-old lefty who missed most of last season with a lat strain.
Outlook: Boston landed the biggest trade chip of the winter and Baltimore couldn't (or didn't try to) acquire the number-one starter it badly needed. When the dust settled, the Orioles look like another 80-something win team that will lean on its organizational depth to overachieve. Machado is already one of the five best players in the game, and at 24 his prime years might still lie ahead. Only three teams in history have had three 40-home run hitters, but Machado, Davis and Trumbo are capable of making it four. Expect some high-scoring games: the Orioles' outfield earned low marks on defense last year, while their starting rotation is iffy at best. Bridging the gap to closer Britton will be key.
PREVIEW
Orioles look to rebound from series-opening loss to Twins

BALTIMORE -- Dylan Bundy will try to rebound on Tuesday after his first non-quality start of the season. It will not be an easy task for the Baltimore Orioles right-hander.

Bundy (5-2, 2.97 ERA) will face Minnesota Twins ace Ervin Santana (6-2, 2.07) in the middle game of a three-game series at Camden Yards. Bundy has lasted at least six innings of each of his nine starts, but he did not give up more than three runs until his last outing.

The Detroit Tigers touched him up for six runs in six innings on Thursday in a 6-5 victory over the Orioles. Still, he made it through the sixth, which gave a tired Baltimore bullpen a break.

Bundy has pitched just once against Minnesota, throwing a scoreless inning last year. The Orioles will need his help after the Twins scored 12 consecutive runs and rallied from an early five-run deficit to post a 14-7 victory in the series opener Monday.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter wants his team to shake off the loss.

"If you're tough mentally. I don't think guys dwell on it," Showalter said. "But as long as they feel like there's a silver lining there, something that's coming that's going to get better, (that's good)."

Santana also is trying to rebound from a defeat. He gave up five runs on six hits in seven innings on Thursday, taking the loss against the Colorado Rockies.

Still, that was the fifth time in nine starts that Santana went at least seven innings. The 34-year old right-hander certainly has earned the respect of manager Paul Molitor.

"He's a poised pitcher who's not intimidated," Molitor said. "Since he's been here, he's pitched good baseball for Minnesota. In a very bleak season (last year), he was one of our lone bright spots. He's a guy who attacks with his fastball."

Santana, who is 4-5 with a 4.87 career ERA against the Orioles, ranks first in the majors in lowest opponents' batting average this year (.144).

The Orioles still are battling a number of injury issues. Manager Buck Showalter said before the game Monday that Ryan Flaherty, on the disabled list due to a strained shoulder, was getting a plasma-rich platelet injection before going out to do rehab work in Florida.

Manny Machado played on Monday after X-rays on his left hand were fine, and he went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI double. He was hit in the hand by a pitch on Sunday, and Showalter said the hand still was not perfect a day later.

The Orioles also recalled right-hander Tyler Wilson for some bullpen help on Monday after optioning right-hander Miguel Castro back to Double-A Bowie following the Sunday game. Wilson allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits in 1 1/3 innings Monday and took the loss.

Baltimore also reinstated right-hander Gabriel Ynoa (right hamstring strain) from the disabled list Monday and immediately optioned him back to Triple-A Norfolk.

The Twins, meanwhile, recalled right-hander Kyle Gibson (1-4) to start the series opener, and he allowed six runs in five innings but still got the win. He snapped a nine-start winless streak.

Thanks to a four-run fifth inning and six-run sixth, Minnesota improved its road record to 12-5.
