Projected lineup: 2B Devon Travis (.300, 11 HR, 50 RBI), 3B Josh Donaldson (.284, 37, 99), RF Jose Bautista (.234, 22, 69), DH Kendrys Morales (.263, 30, 93 with Royals), SS Troy Tulowitzki (.254, 24, 79), C Russell Martin (.231, 20, 74), 1B Justin Smoak (.217, 14, 34), CF Kevin Pillar (.266, 7, 53, 14 SB), LF Ezequiel Carrera (.248, 6, 23)
Rotation: RH Marco Estrada (9-9, 3.48 ERA), LH J.A. Happ (20-4, 3.18), RH Marcus Stroman (9-10, 4.37), RH Aaron Sanchez (15-2, 3.00), LH Francisco Liriano (8-13, 4.69 with Pirates and Blue Jays)
Key relievers: RH Roberto Osuna (4-3, 2.68, 36/42 SV), RH Jason Grilli (6-4, 3.64), RH Joe Biagini (4-3, 3.06), LH J.P. Howell (1-1, 4.09 with Dodgers), RH Joe Smith (1-4, 3.82 with Angels), LH Aaron Loup (0-0, 5.02)
Hot spots: bullpen. The Blue Jays signed only a couple high-profile free agents (retaining Bautista, adding Morales) and brought in many lower-profile veterans mostly to compete for bullpen jobs. Howell and Smith, signed to low-risk deals, are all but guaranteed jobs. But what of Dominic Leone, Mat Latos, Mike Bolsinger, Lucas Harrell and Leonel Campos? Toronto seems to be crowd-sourcing its middle innings with low-risk, right-handed options. Up to a half-dozen pitchers could be competing for one or two jobs.
Outlook: The Blue Jays' roster is enviably balanced, albeit among the older ones in the league. Toronto led the AL in ERA last year. Their entire starting rotation returns, and their veteran bullpen is set up well to support second-year closer Osuna. Ironically, the youngest player in the Jays' starting lineup, 26-year-old Travis, has the biggest health concern of the bunch. He didn't appear in a spring training game until recently because of offseason knee surgery. Encarnacion, who was good for .270/30/100 every year, will be missed. The question now is whether Morales (33), Bautista (36), Tulowitzki (32) and Martin (34) are still close enough to their primes to power another playoff run.
BALTIMORE: 2016: 89-73, second place
Manager: Buck Showalter (eighth season)
Who's new? C Welington Castillo, OF Seth Smith, OF Craig Gentry, OF Michael Bourn, LHP Vidal Nuno
Who's gone? C Matt Wieters, OF Nolan Reimold, INF/OF Steve Pearce, RHP Vance Worley, RHP Odrisamer Despaigne, LHP T.J. McFarland, LHP Brian Duensing, RHP Tommy Hunter
Projected lineup: LF Hyun-Soo Kim (.302, 6 HR, 22 RBI), CF Adam Jones (.265, 29, 83), 3B Manny Machado (.294, 37, 96), 1B Chris Davis (.221, 38, 84), DH Mark Trumbo (.256, 47, 108), RF Seth Smith (.249, 16, 63 with Mariners), 2B Jonathan Schoop (.267, 25, 82), C Welington Castillo (.264, 14, 68 with Diamondbacks), SS J.J. Hardy (.269, 9, 48)
Rotation: RH Kevin Gausman (9-12, 3.61 ERA), RH Dylan Bundy (10-6, 4.02), LH Wade Miley (9-13, 5.37), RH Ubaldo Jimenez (8-12, 5.44), RH Mike Wright (3-4, 5.79) or Chris Lee (5-0, 2.98 at Double-A) or Gabriel Ynoa (1-0, 6.38 with Mets) or Tyler Wilson (4-6, 5.27) or Jayson Aquino (0-0, 0.00 in three games)
Key relievers: LH Zach Britton (2-1, 0.54, 47/47 SV), RH Brad Brach (10-4, 2.05), RH Darren O'Day (3-1, 3.77), RH Mychal Givens (8-2, 3.13), LH Donnie Hart (0-0, 0.49), LH Vidal Nuno (1-1, 3.53 with Mariners)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and bullpen. A shoulder injury in camp left 16-game winner Chris Tillman in doubt for opening day. That opened the floodgates for a pair of competitions that are somewhat intertwined, since the Orioles value long relievers more than perhaps any team. Wright and Wilson, who shuttled between the bullpen and the rotation last season, are the top candidates for the final rotation job. Aquino is a candidate to start or relieve. Logan Verrett, Richard Bleier and Zach Stewart are all potential long men. Keep an eye on Lee, a 24-year-old lefty who missed most of last season with a lat strain.
Outlook: Boston landed the biggest trade chip of the winter and Baltimore couldn't (or didn't try to) acquire the number-one starter it badly needed. When the dust settled, the Orioles look like another 80-something win team that will lean on its organizational depth to overachieve. Machado is already one of the five best players in the game, and at 24 his prime years might still lie ahead. Only three teams in history have had three 40-home run hitters, but Machado, Davis and Trumbo are capable of making it four. Expect some high-scoring games: the Orioles' outfield earned low marks on defense last year, while their starting rotation is iffy at best. Bridging the gap to closer Britton will be key.
Orioles need innings from Tillman vs. Blue Jays

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles return home Friday night to start a weekend series with the Toronto Blue Jays, and Baltimore hopes starter Chris Tillman can give its embattled bullpen some rest.

The Orioles stumbled to a 1-6 record on the road trip that ended with a 6-5 loss in Detroit on Thursday. Baltimore (23-16) begins the series in second place in the American League East, 1 1/2 games behind the Yankees.

Problems with starters and the bullpen haunted the Orioles throughout the trip.

Tillman (1-0, 2.89 ERA) has not lasted longer than five innings in either of his first two starts after returning from the disabled list (shoulder bursitis). The Orioles need him to go longer.

Still, manager Buck Showalter likes what he has seen so far from the team's No. 1 starter. What he wants the most is for Tillman to go deeper into the game to take some kind of pressure off a bullpen that has been asked to do way too much in recent days.

The bullpen already is without All-Star closer Zach Britton for several weeks (left forearm strain) and needs some rest.

"His numbers are probably a little better than his starts," Showalter said of Tillman. "Command has been a challenge for him, as it has been for a lot of our guys. Hopefully, we get on a run where we can get more than four- or five-inning starts. That's what has been the biggest challenge for our bullpen."

Tillman is just 5-10 with a 5.44 ERA in 24 career starts vs. the Jays.

Baltimore also hopes to have third baseman Manny Machado back in the starting lineup. He missed the Thursday matinee in Detroit (sore finger).

Also, Seth Smith had a foul ball bounce up and hit near his left eye Thursday, and the situation worsened as time went on. His status for this game is unknown.

The Orioles now are 10-13 on the road but 13-3 at home.

Aaron Sanchez (0-1, 2.95) makes his fifth start of the season for Toronto and his second after coming off the disabled list, his second time there this year due to blister and nail problems on his finger.

He has a 5-3 record (with a 4.31 ERA) in 14 appearances, including nine starts, versus the Orioles in his career.

Injuries have crushed Toronto (18-24) so far this season, as it has six players on the 10-day disabled list already.

Darrell Ceciliani was injured during a 9-0 victory on Thursday at Atlanta, apparently hurting his left shoulder when hitting a home run in the third. He came out right away.

Three Toronto players hit their first homers of the season, including winning pitcher Marcus Stroman, in that game.

The Jays also will be without center fielder Kevin Pillar, serving the second game of a two-game suspension for using a "homophobic slur" during the game on Wednesday.

"There's no place for this type of language on a baseball field, at home, in the clubhouse, with your friends, in the privacy of your home," Pillar told the media in an apology. "I regret saying it wholeheartedly."
