KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA: MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The number is staggering. In the past three years, the Minnesota Twins have lost 291 games. Ninety-nine in 2011. Ninety-six each of the last two seasons.
A team that was once viewed as a model for succeeding and competing with modest financial resources has been an afterthought for too long now. They have finished last in the AL Central twice and were fourth last season.
So the Twins shed their frugal ways in the offseason, shelling out $73 million to bring in Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes to bolster a lagging rotation. They also brought back manager Ron Gardenhire on a two-year deal and moved Joe Mauer from catcher to first base in an effort to protect their franchise player from injury.
''They made a statement: `We don't want to see this again. We don't want to go through this again this summer,''' Gardenhire said.
The Twins said goodbye to longtime first baseman Justin Morneau late last season when general manager Terry Ryan traded him to the Pirates in a stretch-run deal. There weren't many other changes to an offense that has struggled to score runs, but the upgrades to the rotation have given the holdovers some peace of mind that they won't have to score seven runs a game to have a chance to win.
''It's night and day to be honest with you. Terry went out and spent some money on some good arms in Nolasco and Hughes,'' second baseman Brian Dozier said. ''Hughes had a bad year last year but is an All-Star pitcher and I think moving to this park will help him a lot. I think just getting out of New York to be honest with you. ... So we needed to address our pitching staff and Terry did that, and I'm happy about it.''
BALTIMORE: BALTIMORE (AP) - The transformation of the Baltimore Orioles clubhouse under manager Buck Showalter is complete.
No longer do the Orioles hope to win. They expect it.
When Showalter took over in July 2010, he inherited a team with the worst record in the majors. Having gone without a winning season since 1997, Baltimore could only hope Showalter's knack for orchestrating quick turnarounds would take hold in a town that had switched its allegiance from baseball to football.
By 2012, the Orioles were back. Baltimore won 93 games, beat Texas in the wild-card matchup and took the New York Yankees to the limit before falling in the AL division series.
After missing the postseason last year, the Orioles are poised for a return. They maintained the nucleus of a team that went 85-77 and was in contention to the final week, then added right-handed starter Ubaldo Jimenez and slugger Nelson Cruz to an already potent lineup that led the majors in home runs in 2013.
''When you have talent, you have confidence,'' right fielder Nick Markakis said. ''Put them together and good things usually happen. We've got that right now. We know we have a good team and we're going to roll with it.''
Although Jimenez and Cruz didn't come aboard until after the start of spring training, Showalter never wavered in his belief that the Orioles would challenge the defending champion Boston Red Sox and retooled Yankees in the AL East.
''I felt that way whether or not we added Nelson and Jimenez,'' he said. ''That's a poor reflection on me and my staff if we thought we needed more to win.''

*Twins-Orioles Preview* =======================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Minnesota (59-74) at Baltimore (76-56), 7:05 p.m. EDT

With Chris Davis' help, the Baltimore Orioles continue to have few problems winning at home lately. They've had even fewer during recent starts from Chris Tillman.

The right-hander will seek to finish the month 5-0 by earning his first win in five career starts against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night.

Baltimore (77-56) didn't sweat too much in its 19th victory in 25 home games and the fourth in its last five overall, beating Minnesota 9-1 in Friday's series opener. Chris Davis broke open the game in the fourth inning with his fourth career grand slam and third home run in the last five contests.

Seven of Davis' 14 hits this month have gone over the fence, and he's hit five homers in his last 10 home games. The .189 hitter is 10 for 31 (.323) with four homers and 17 RBIs in his last eight contests against Minnesota.

The Orioles would seem to have a good chance to keep things rolling with Tillman (11-5, 3.41 ERA) going to the mound. He's registered a 1.26 ERA in his five starts this month and allowed a combined two runs, six hits and three walks in 15 innings in his last two outings

Baltimore has won the last six times Tillman has pitched by a 39-13 margin, the latest a 9-1 rout of visiting Tampa Bay on Monday. The right-hander gave up an unearned run, three hits and two walks in seven innings.

"I think, mechanically, I'm pretty sound," Tillman said. "I'm able to repeat my delivery, so I think that translates into being able to throw all your pitches for strikes. That's important."

Tillman hasn't fared nearly as well in his previous four starts against Minnesota (59-74), going 0-3 with a 6.06 ERA. The most recent was a 6-5 defeat at Camden Yards on April 6, 2013.

Minnesota, loser in nine of 13, will send out struggling Kyle Gibson (11-10, 4.31). The right-hander is 1-2 with a 6.35 ERA in his last four starts and has permitted 10 runs in 10 innings in his past two.

He allowed five runs, eight hits and four walks in 4 2-3 innings Sunday in a 13-4 drubbing by Detroit. He opened with two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the third.

"I think early on I felt like, 'Hey, it was going to be a start that would get me back on track,'" Gibson said. "Then the third inning, left a couple pitches up and got myself hurt in that inning."

Gibson is 5-1 with a 2.43 ERA in his last six road starts but has never pitched against the Orioles.

It's unknown if Steve Pearce will play in this game. The first baseman left after the third inning Friday with a strained right abdominal and he had a career-best, 11-game hit streak snapped.

Slated to be a utility player coming into this season, Pearce is batting .289 with career highs of 16 homers and 37 RBIs. His status for the near future could hinge on his MRI on Saturday morning.

"I'm just hoping it's a day or two thing," Pearce said. "I'm not feeling any pain or anything, just discomfort."
