KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY METS: 2016: 87-75, second place
Manager: Terry Collins (seventh season)
Who's new? No one of note
Who's gone? 1B James Loney, IF/OF Kelly Johnson, OF Alejandro De Aza, RHP Bartolo Colon, LHP Jonathon Niese
Projected lineup: CF Curtis Granderson (.237, 30 HR, 59 RBI), 3B David Wright (.226, 7, 14 in 37 games), LF Yoenis Cespedes (.280, 31, 86), RF Jay Bruce (.250, 33, 99 with Reds and Mets), 2B Neil Walker (.282, 23, 55), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (.280, 23, 62), 1B Lucas Duda (.229, 7, 23 in 47 games), C Travis d'Arnaud (.247, 4, 15)
Rotation: RH Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 ERA), RH Jacob deGrom (7-8, 3.04), RH Matt Harvey (4-10, 4.86), LH Steven Matz (9-8, 3.40), RH Zack Wheeler or RH Robert Gsellman (4-2, 2.42) or RH Seth Lugo (5-2, 2.67)
Key relievers: RH Jeurys Familia (3-4, 2.55, 51/56 SV), RH Addison Reed (4-2, 1.97), RH Hansel Robles (6-4, 3.48), LH Jerry Blevins (4-2, 2.79), RH Fernando Salas (3-7, 3.91)
Hot spots: First base and third base. Duda missed 115 games last season because of a stress fracture in his lower back. When healthy, the veteran first baseman slugged a career-low .714. Former first-round draft pick Dominic Smith, 21, could be in position to battle for the starting spot soon. He'll likely begin the season at Triple-A. Franchise third baseman Wright doesn't have a hot prospect pushing him out the door, but how much game does he have left? The perennial All-Star only began throwing a baseball in February after an eight-month recovery from neck surgery. Wright had a degenerative back and has only played 75 games the last two years. Getting a full season from him at age 34 would be a shock.
Outlook: The Mets' championship window opened with a surprise World Series run in 2015, and their front office seems convinced it's still open. The club invested four years and $110 million to keep Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield. The Mets also exercised club options on Jay Bruce and Jose Reyes, and brought Neil Walker back on a qualifying offer. The result? Almost everyone returns from a club that lost a wild-card game to the Giants last October. The franchise is oozing young pitching ' Syndergaard might be the best right-hander on the planet ' but another World Series appearance might be too much to expect from a team that ranked 25th in runs per game last season.
ATLANTA: 2016: 68-93, fifth place
Manager: Brian Snitker (second season)
Who's new? 2B Brandon Phillips, 2B Micah Johnson, C Kurt Suzuki, IF/OF Sean Rodriguez, SP Bartolo Colon, SP R.A. Dickey, SP Jaime Garcia
Who's gone? OF Mallex Smith, C A.J. Pierzynski, RHP Chris Withrow, RHP Ryan Weber
Projected lineup: CF Ender Inciarte (.291, 3 HR, 29 RBI, 16 SB), SS Dansby Swanson (.302, 3, 17), 1B Freddie Freeman (.302, 34, 91), LF Matt Kemp (.280, 12, 39 with Padres and Braves), RF Nick Markakis (.269, 13, 89), 2B Brandon Phillips (.291, 11, 64, 14 SB), 3B Adonis Garcia (.273, 14, 65), C Tyler Flowers (.270, 8, 41)
Rotation: RH Julio Teheran (7-10, 3.21), RH Bartolo Colon (15-8, 3.43 with Mets), LH Jaime Garcia (10-13, 4.67 with Cardinals), RH R.A. Dickey (10-15, 4.46 with Blue Jays), RH Mike Foltynewicz (9-5, 4.31)
Key relievers: RH Jim Johnson (2-6, 3.06 ERA, 20/23 SV), RH Arodys Vizcaino (1-4, 4.42, 10/14 SV), RH Mauricio Cabrera (5-1, 2.82), LH Ian Krol (2-0, 3.18), RH Jose Ramirez (2-2, 3.58), RH Josh Collmenter (1-0, 4.84 with Diamondbacks)
Hot spots: Second base and rotation. Phillips, acquired from the Reds in February, is a placeholder for prospect Ozzie Albies at second base. Albies, 20, won the Double-A Southern League batting title in 2016 and is a potential September call-up at least. The rotation is in a similar state of transition, but it's more complicated. Veterans Teheran, Colon, Dickey and Garcia have jobs for now. Youngsters Foltynewicz, Aaron Blair, Matt Wisler, Lucas Sims and Sean Newcomb are pushing to seize long-term spots.
Outlook: In the inaugural season at SunTrust Park, the Braves will try to crack .500 for the first time since 2013. Their rebuilding work isn't finished, but the front office added about $30 million in salary over the winter. That ought to be enough to make the Braves watchable again. Now, the veterans trying to extend their careers in Atlanta (Colon, Dickey, Phillips, Kemp) are almost as intriguing as the prospects. The sight of 23-year-old shortstop Swanson backing up 40-something pitchers Colon and Dickey could be something special.
PREVIEW
Mets, Braves meet for third series in young season

ATLANTA -- It is only the first day of May, but the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets are about to start their third series against each other. And keeping with the theme of familiarity, two starting pitchers who squared off last week will meet again Monday in the opener of the four-game series.

Atlanta right-hander Julio Teheran (2-1, 3.38 ERA) will have a rematch with New York right-hander Robert Gsellman (0-2, 8.23) in the first game.

The Braves just completed a 4-4 road trip and have won four of the last five games. The Mets won two of three at Washington over the weekend but have lost 11 of their past 14 and were beaten 23-5 by the Nationals on Sunday.

The Braves swept a two-game series in New York last week.

Teheran pitched 6 1/3 strong innings in an 8-2 win over the Mets on Wednesday. He got some run support early, and he allowed two runs and four walks while striking out four.

Gsellman lasted only four innings and gave up six runs (five earned), 10 hits and three walks.

Teheran has produced four quality starts in five appearances this season. The only blip was a seven-run, four-inning stint against Washington, a team that has hit him hard throughout his career.

Teheran has fared well in his career against the Mets. He is 8-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) vs. New York, including 4-0 with an 0.72 ERA in his seven most recent starts against the Mets.

"Whenever you have a lineup you do well against and you see them coming upon the schedule, you're happy," Teheran said. "Now I face them again at home."

Gsellman made one relief appearance to start the season (one shutout inning against Atlanta) before jumping into the rotation. In four starts, Gsellman has pitched more than five innings only once -- a seven-inning stint against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Gsellman made two starts against the Braves in 2016, going 0-1 with a 5.23 ERA. He allowed six runs and 12 hits with 12 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings.

"He fell behind in counts," Mets manager Terry Collins said of Gsellman's last start. "When you fall behind in counts in the big leagues, you're going to get in trouble."

The Braves are eager to get home after an eight-game road trip that took them to Philadelphia, New York and Milwaukee. Atlanta played only seven games in new Sun Trust Park in April and will make up for it with 16 home dates in May.

Atlanta's offense is clicking, scoring 39 runs in the past five games. Nick Markakis has a six-game hitting streak and has reached base in 20 of his past 22 games.

New York will await news about ace Noah Syndergaard, who had to leave the Sunday game after 1 1/3 innings with a possible lat strain. Syndergaard missed a start due to biceps tendinitis and refused to get an MRI.

The right-hander allowed five runs in the first inning and departed in pain after throwing one pitch to Bryce Harper in the second.
