KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON: WASHINGTON (AP) - Thanks in part to No. 1 overall draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, the 2012 Washington Nationals were considered an up-and-coming team, perhaps a year or two away from contending.
So what did they do? Went out and led the majors with 98 wins.
Thanks to that quick rise, the 2013 Nationals became a popular pick to go to the World Series. So what did they do? Stumbled at the start and missed out on the playoffs.
Now here come the 2014 Nationals, featuring largely the same roster - including Strasburg on the mound, and Harper in left field, both feeling good after offseason surgery - and with rookie manager Matt Williams replacing Davey Johnson, he of the ''World Series or bust'' proclamation.
One key difference: The club knows what it's like to experience a truly disappointing, worse-than-they-were-supposed-to-be season for the first time since moving from Montreal in 2005.
''We got ahead of ourselves a little bit. My take on it was always: Last year in spring training, we had expectations on ourselves, really, for the first time, and we thought we were better, maybe, than we were,'' reliever Tyler Clippard said. ''We came into the season expecting to win, which is a good thing. But at the same time, we might not have went out there and earned it, like we should have.''
Yes, the team that got Strasburg and Harper thanks to consecutive 100-loss seasons is trying to deal with lofty goals.
''To see the organization from basically, literally, the ground up, improve is something I kind of take pride in, because when I signed, people would be like, `Oh, you play for the Expos and the Nationals,' and they'd be like, `Uh, OK, I don't know them,''' said shortstop Ian Desmond, drafted by Montreal in 2004. ''And now, it's like there's some pride behind playing for the Washington Nationals.''
ATLANTA: ATLANTA (AP) - For the Atlanta Braves, spring training turned into a matter of survival.
No wonder they're so eager to get the season going.
The defending NL East champions lost a big chunk of their starting rotation down in Florida: projected opening day starter Kris Medlen and fellow right-hander Brandon Beachy both underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time and are out for the season. Another starter, Mike Minor, will also begin the year on the disabled list as he recovers from a sore shoulder.
But the Braves are nothing if not resourceful. They quickly signed Ervin Santana to a $14.1 million, one-year contract and have every intention of getting back to the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years.
''We still have a great team,'' closer Craig Kimbrel said. ''It's tough losing two top pitchers. But getting Santana was really big. I want to be closing out division titles and championships and World Series. I think we've still got the group to do it.''
The Braves will have a different look behind the plate after longtime catcher Brian McCann signed with the New York Yankees. But another title in a lackluster division is certainly a possibility, especially if second baseman Dan Uggla and center fielder B.J. Upton bounce back from dismal seasons in which both hit under .200. They showed signs of turning things around in spring training.
''Time will tell,'' general manager Frank Wren said, ''but we really like what we've seen so far.''

*Nationals-Braves Preview* ==========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Washington (84-63) at Atlanta (75-73), 7:10 p.m. EDT

While they aren't likely to catch the Washington Nationals atop the NL East, the slumping Atlanta Braves are still holding out hope that they can claim a wild-card spot.

Sending Ervin Santana to the mound at Turner Field may help them get back on track.

As the right-hander looks to win his eighth straight decision at home, the Braves will try to continue their success when facing hard-throwing Stephen Strasburg in Monday's opener of a three-game set.

Atlanta (75-74) fell a nearly insurmountable 10 1/2 games back of division-leading Washington (85-63) with a 10-3 loss at Texas and the Nationals' 3-0 road win over the New York Mets on Sunday.

The Braves have dropped nine of 12 in September and are on the cusp of falling back to .500 for the first time since opening 1-1. However, they're still just four games behind Pittsburgh for the NL's second wild-card spot with 13 contests remaining.

"The second week of September, games are running out and you start to worry about it," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "It's not a real good feeling."

Atlanta has averaged 2.3 runs and is hitting .215 over its last 14 contests. It's been a much different story versus Washington at home, where the club has scored 5.7 per game and batted .288 while winning five of six.

Just five days after beating Strasburg (11-11, 3.46 ERA) at Nationals Park, Atlanta will try to improve to 5-0 against the Nationals in games started by the right-hander.

Strasburg allowed three runs with eight strikeouts over six innings in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Braves, dropping him to 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA in his last eight starts with both defeats coming versus Atlanta.

The 26-year-old is winless over his last nine starts in the rivalry and is 0-3 against the Braves this year with a 7.17 ERA - his worst versus any division opponent.

Freddie Freeman has gone 4 for 8 with two home runs off Strasburg in 2014 and is hitting .440 with three homers and nine RBIs in 25 career at-bats. The All-Star is also batting .476 with four homers in 16 games against the Nationals this season.

Justin Upton is 4 for 9 with a home run and three RBIs off Strasburg this season, while Jason Heyward is batting .419 over 31 career at-bats in the matchup.

Washington's Jayson Werth and Ian Desmond had two hits and Wilson Ramos hit his 10th home run in Sunday's win that helped reduce the club's magic number for winning a second division title in three years to four.

"Be a lot better when the magic number is zero," pitcher Jordan Zimmermann said.

Werth is hitting .163 with 18 strikeouts against the Braves, while Desmond is 1 for 9 with four strikeouts versus Santana.

After going 7-1 with a 2.94 ERA over 10 starts, Santana (14-8, 3.76) allowed a season high-tying six runs - five earned - and walked four over five innings in Tuesday's 6-4 loss at Washington.

Santana has gone 1-2 with a 6.35 ERA in three meetings with the Nationals this season, but he's 7-0 with a 2.91 ERA in his last eight home starts overall. He allowed four runs over six innings a 7-6 home victory over Washington on Aug. 8.

Denard Span has gone 5 for 9 with two doubles when facing Santana, while Adam LaRoche is 3 for 8 with three RBIs.

The Nationals have dropped 10 of 16 in the season series.
