KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.
ATLANTA: ATLANTA (AP) - For the Atlanta Braves, spring training turned into a matter of survival.
No wonder they're so eager to get the season going.
The defending NL East champions lost a big chunk of their starting rotation down in Florida: projected opening day starter Kris Medlen and fellow right-hander Brandon Beachy both underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time and are out for the season. Another starter, Mike Minor, will also begin the year on the disabled list as he recovers from a sore shoulder.
But the Braves are nothing if not resourceful. They quickly signed Ervin Santana to a $14.1 million, one-year contract and have every intention of getting back to the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years.
''We still have a great team,'' closer Craig Kimbrel said. ''It's tough losing two top pitchers. But getting Santana was really big. I want to be closing out division titles and championships and World Series. I think we've still got the group to do it.''
The Braves will have a different look behind the plate after longtime catcher Brian McCann signed with the New York Yankees. But another title in a lackluster division is certainly a possibility, especially if second baseman Dan Uggla and center fielder B.J. Upton bounce back from dismal seasons in which both hit under .200. They showed signs of turning things around in spring training.
''Time will tell,'' general manager Frank Wren said, ''but we really like what we've seen so far.''

*Padres-Braves Preview* =======================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

San Diego (45-56) at Atlanta (55-47), 7:10 p.m. EDT

While Julio Teheran could use a little help from the rest of the Atlanta Braves, Odrisamer Despaigne needed no such backing from the San Diego Padres his last time out.

Teheran may need to overcome a sputtering offense to continue his dominance at Turner Field on Saturday night against the Padres, who turn to Despaigne for the first time since his near no-hitter.

Teheran (9-6, 2.64 ERA) leads Atlanta (55-48) in ERA and strikeouts (127), and the right-hander's win total ties Ervin Santana and Aaron Harang for the most on the staff.

The 23-year-old, however, has lost out on a few victories since he's been backed by two runs or fewer in 11 of his 21 starts. He's gone 1-5 with a 2.82 ERA in those outings.

Run support was a problem again Monday for Teheran, who tied a career high with 11 strikeouts and allowed one run over seven innings while the offense managed just six hits in a 3-1 loss in 10 against Miami.

"He's been so good," third baseman Chris Johnson said. "That's kind of what we expect. That's why it stinks as an offense. We know with a couple runs for him, we're good to go."

Teheran has been backed by one run in his two career starts against the Padres, but giving up nine runs and four homers in 12 2-3 innings was much more of an issue.

He may not need much at home, where he's 3-1 with a 1.23 ERA in 10 starts, including 3-0 with a 0.80 mark over the last six.

The offense remains a worry, though, after producing a .196 average with 16 runs during a 1-4 stretch, including four hits in Friday's 5-2 loss to San Diego (46-56) in the opener of this four-game wraparound series.

The Braves may find trouble at the plate again in their first meeting with Despaigne (2-1, 1.31), who is looking to build on his brush with history.

The 27-year-old rookie right-hander fell four outs shy of becoming the first Padre to toss a no-hitter, leaving after giving up two hits and one run while not getting a decision in a 3-1 win over the New York Mets on Sunday.

"I thought he was throwing well enough to think, 'Hey, it could happen,'" manager Bud Black told MLB's official website. "He had all four pitches working from different angles. His stuff was good enough to keep them off-balance."

The heavy workload - he tossed a season-high 123 pitches - was why Black opted to push Despaigne's scheduled start back one day.

"We decided 'Let's give him an extra day's rest,'" the manager said.

Despaigne, a Cuban defector, has yielded one run or none in four of his five starts since having his contract purchased from Triple-A El Paso.

Unlike Atlanta, the Padres are finding some success with the bats, hitting .318 with 26 runs during a three-game winning streak. Still, they're batting .218 in 2014 - the lowest by any team at this point in a season since the 1968 New York Yankees hit .213.

Rookie first baseman Tommy Medica and journeyman catcher Rene Rivera are among the reasons for San Diego's surprising production.

Medica is 7 for 10 with three RBIs in his last two games after going 1 for 21 over his previous 10. The first baseman pounded out a career-high four hits while driving in one run in his return to the lineup Friday.

Rivera has five hits, including a homer, and four RBIs in two games to raise his season average 20 points to .235.
