| |  | MINNESOTA: HITTING: OF BEN REVERE's slap-and-run style fits well in spacious Target Field. He will compete with lefty Chris Parmelee for the starting RF job. OF DENARD SPAN should be over his concussion problems. He works the count well as a steady presence near the top of the order. C JOE MAUER will see more time at first in an attempt to keep him healthy. Offensively, he'll be limited by a pitcher-friendly home park and no support in the lineup. RYAN DOUMIT has a chance to play regularly and stay healthy as a full-time DH and/or backing up Mauer behind the dish. 1B JUSTIN MORNEAU's concussion symptoms came back late last year. It's a bad omen. OF JOSH WILLINGHAM is being relied on to produce runs, but he's going from one pitcher-friendly home park (Oakland) to another. 3B DANNY VALENCIA showed enough power in 2011 to secure an everyday job heading into 2012. Newly signed SS JAMEY CARROLL has done a nice job off the bench, but hasn't been tested in an everyday role. If hamstring problems are still holding him back, 2B ALEXI CASILLA has won the second-base job ahead of disappointing import TSUYOSHI NISHIOKA, who will start the year in the minors.
STARTING PITCHING: Who would have thought CARL PAVANO would emerge as the picture of consistency and durability? While he's far from a star, the veteran continues to be a rock for Minnesota, throwing strikes and eating innings. SCOTT BAKER got hurt again last year. If he could ever stay healthy, he's the prototype for success at Target Field'lots of strikeouts, few walks, lots of flyouts. The FRANCISCO LIRIANO rollercoaster nosedived again last year. The Twins have gotten so desperate to keep him healthy that they actually let him pitch more over the offseason. He's obviously a huge risk again. BRIAN DUENSING, NICK BLACKBURN and JASON MARQUIS are all the definition of fifth starter. They serve it up, give up a lot of hard-hit balls, and hope they get hit right at their defenders. If Duensing and Blackburn falter, ANTHONY SWARZAK probably pitched well enough last year to get a shot in the rotation. LIAM HENDRICKS, one of the organization's better prospects, would be a slightly more exciting option.
RELIEF PITCHING: Despite his underwhelming performance last year, MATT CAPPS will pitch the ninth inning again because of his 'closer's experience.' He figures to be on an undeservedly long leash. GLEN PERKINS certainly proved he deserves to close. He was Minnesota's best reliever in his first full season in the 'pen. His velocity was up as a short reliever, and the lefty was truly overpowering. If things go sour for the Twins again this season (and it seems likely they will), perhaps they'll get serious about Perkins later this year. | | ATLANTA: HITTING: The Braves were 27th in the majors in steals last year, but that number should rise with a full season of speedster OF MICHAEL BOURN, who was acquired from Houston last July. OFs MARTIN PRADO and JASON HEYWARD comprise the corner outfield spots, and are both are looking to bounce back after disappointing, injury-riddled 2011 campaigns. 2B DAN UGGLA smacked a career-best 36 HR in his first year with Atlanta, his fifth straight 30-homer season. Steady veterans C BRIAN McCANN and 3B CHIPPER JONES comprise a solid middle of the lineup. McCann has four straight 20-HR, 70-RBI seasons, while Jones, who turns 40 in April, has a career .402 on-base percentage. 1B FREDDIE FREEMAN was the N.L.'s best offensive rookie last year, batting .282 with 21 HR and 76 RBI. The starting shortstop will be one of two highly-touted, 22-year-old prospects, TYLER PASTORNICKY or ANDRELTON SIMMONS.
STARTING PITCHING: Even with significant injuries to three starters, the Braves rotation still ranked ninth in the majors in ERA (3.73), thanks to TIM HUDSON posting a 3.22 ERA in 215 innings. The right-hander was lights-out at Turner Field again, going 10-4 with a 2.31 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. But he'll be out at least a month because of back problems. JAIR JURRJENS was outstanding through the end of July (12-3, 2.38 ERA), but a knee strain bothered him in August and shut him down for September. Although many teams inquired about Jurrjens in the offseason, it doesn't look like the Braves want to deal him just yet. TOMMY HANSON is another young star (25) that had to be shut down in early August due to a partially torn rotator cuff. His ERA was a career-worst 3.60, but he notched a career-best 9.8 K/9 rate. BRANDON BEACHY, also 25, posted a whopping 10.7 K/9 ratio with a respectable ERA (3.68) and WHIP (1.21). Atlanta is loaded with young pitchers, but expect MIKE MINOR (5-3, 4.14 ERA) and RANDALL DELGADO to start in the majors, with JULIO TEHERAN, who has the most upside of the trio, to begin 2012 in Triple-A.
RELIEF PITCHING: CRAIG KIMBREL exceeded all expectations last year, establishing himself as one of the best closers in the game. He struck out an eye-popping 14.8 batters per nine (127 K in 77 IP), and converted 46-of-54 (85%) save chances. Even though Kimbrel's job as a closer is probably locked down for the next decade, the Braves have two other great relievers, both lefties. JONNY VENTERS posted a 1.84 WHIP and .176 opponents' BA in 88 innings, and is next in line for saves (five in 2011) should Kimbrel suffer an injury. Fellow southpaw ERIC O'FLAHERTY had a 0.98 ERA (8 ER in 73.2 IP) and 32 holds, just three fewer than Venters. |

The Atlanta Braves finally played a game in which they didn't have to rally to win. If Tim Hudson can't put an end to his recent struggles, they may find themselves needing to overcome a deficit yet again.
Hudson will try to avoid losing three consecutive starts for the first time in three seasons as the Braves go for a fifth straight victory Tuesday night against the slumping Minnesota Twins.
Losers of four in a row to AL teams heading into this three-game series, the Braves (26-18) defeated the Twins 5-1 on Monday in the clubs' first meeting in Atlanta since the 1991 World Series.
Sparked by Dan Uggla's three-run homer, the Braves scored four times in the first inning to snap a string of 11 consecutive games in which they allowed the first run.
Atlanta will now try to extend its season-best five-game home winning streak with Hudson (4-3, 5.12 ERA) trying to win his fourth consecutive start at Turner Field. The right-hander, though, has lost his last two outings, yielding 11 runs in 8 2-3 innings.
He gave up five runs in five innings of a 5-3 defeat to Arizona on Wednesday.
"I feel like the results weren't like how I felt out there," Hudson said.
He last dropped three consecutive starts from Sept. 2-12, 2010.
That was also the last season Hudson faced Minnesota (18-23), and he's posted a 6-3 record and 2.13 ERA in 14 career starts versus the Twins.
He'll face a Minnesota team that's scored 15 times during a six-game skid. The Twins, who last dropped seven in a row during an 11-game losing streak Sept. 9-21, 2011, will give the ball to Mike Pelfrey (3-4, 6.57) on Tuesday.
Minnesota hopes to get a lengthy start from the right-hander as four of its last five starters have failed to get out of the fifth inning. Pelfrey, though, is struggling to find consistency after missing most of last season with the New York Mets due to Tommy John surgery.
The right-hander gave up five runs in four-plus innings of a 9-4 loss to Chicago White Sox on Wednesday after lasting six innings in each of his previous two outings.
"It's an ongoing process," manager Ron Gardenhire told the Twins' official website. "Sometimes he gets on top and the ball is sinking good, and other times the ball is kind of flat across the zone. And when that happened, they end up making him pay for it. So we'll just keep running him out there and see if he can get better as we go along here."
Pelfrey has lost his last three starts in Atlanta with a 6.75 ERA.
Braves catcher Brian McCann, 18 for 39 with two homers and eight doubles off Pelfrey, should be back behind the plate after Gerald Laird got the start Monday.
Uggla has gone 13 for 32 (.406) against Pelfrey.
Joe Mauer, 0 for 4 in each of the last two games following a 15-game hitting streak, is 1 for 7 off Hudson. Justin Morneau is 2 for 20 in that matchup, while Josh Willingham, who snapped a 17-game home run drought in the ninth inning Monday, has one hit in 20 at-bats off Hudson.
