| | | TEXAS: HITTING: 2B IAN KINSLER will lead off again. A few less at-'em balls and he's an MVP candidate. SS ELVIS ANDRUS is coming along offensively, but his poor SB% could lead to fewer attempts. Injuries are the only thing that will keep OF JOSH HAMILTON out of the MVP discussion. He'll likely start declining at age 35, but DH MICHAEL YOUNG can't help but put up numbers batting cleanup in this lineup. 3B ADRIAN BELTRE was unstoppable in Arlington. Like Hamilton, he's an MVP candidate if healthy. Injuries are piling up for OF NELSON CRUZ, who still has monster power but doesn't run as much anymore. C MIKE NAPOLI is MLB's best offensive catcher and will play some 1B on 'off' days. Because their lineup is stacked, Texas can play defensive-minded/offensively limited 1B MITCH MORELAND. And because Ron Washington would prefer to play Hamilton in left, speedy CF CRAIG GENTRY looks to have the edge over DAVID MURPHY for the starting job in center. Cuban import LEONYS MARTIN will start the season in Triple-A, but JULIO BORBON could earn a significant OF role. STARTING PITCHING: COLBY LEWIS can overpower when he's on, but as a flyball pitcher in cozy Arlington he's going to have a handful of ugly days. The much-ballyhooed YU DARVISH brings a deep arsenal of pitches and a durable frame from Japan. He's probably the best Japanese arm to ever cross the Pacific. Lefty MATT HARRISON solidified his rotation spot. He has topped out as a respectable No. 3-type starter. DEREK HOLLAND has top-of-the-rotation upside. Consistency has been an issue, but hopefully another year and some big postseason moments helped to cure that. The big story is NEFTALI FELIZ moving to the rotation. He was considered a future ace in the minors, but the transition might not be easy. His K/BB ratio plummeted last year and his flyball tendencies could spell disaster in Arlington. Keep in mind the Rangers made a successful closer-to-ace switch with C.J. Wilson. Top prospect MARTIN PEREZ could be an option in the second half. RELIEF PITCHING: Veteran JOE NATHAN was brought in and handed the closer's job. He struggled in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, but most pitchers who've had the procedure don't come all the way back until their second full season. If Nathan falters, MIKE ADAMS could be next in line. He had no trouble transitioning from pitcher-friendly San Diego in the National League to hitter-friendly Arlington and the A.L.'s superior bats. KOJI UEHARA would also be in the closer discussion if Nathan falters, but he was unhappy about being traded from Baltimore and faltered for the Rangers late last year. ALEXI OGANDO got a huge boost from his defense and his bullpen before a late-season collapse. He threw by far a career-high in innings; better stamina would allow him to take the next step and possibly rejoin the rotation. | | ARIZONA: HITTING: Arizona's offense placed ninth in the majors in runs (4.5 per game), homers (172) and OPS (.736), thanks in big part to its young outfield trio. OF JUSTIN UPTON, 24, had a career year and led his team with a .289 BA, 31 HR, 88 RBI, 105 runs and a .369 OBP. OF GERARDO PARRA may have won a Gold Glove, but OF JASON KUBEL is the new leftfielder. Kubel's power numbers will improve in the desert. OF CHRIS YOUNG's .236 BA was poor, but his .331 OBP allowed him to score 89 times and swipe a team-high 22 SB. 1B PAUL GOLDSCHMIDT, 24, belted 30 homers in 103 Double-A games and continued his power in the majors with eight bombs in 156 at-bats. 3B RYAN ROBERTS (19 HR, 86 runs) and C MIGUEL MONTERO (18 HR, 86 RBI) also had career-best seasons. 2B AARON HILL was a great midseason acquisition from Toronto, tallying an .878 OPS in 33 games with Arizona. SS STEPHEN DREW batted only .252 with 5 HR in half a season before fracturing his ankle. He'll probably return in early May, and speedy WILLIE BLOOMQUIST will replace him in the starting lineup. STARTING PITCHING: D-backs starters won 71 games, sixth-most in baseball. IAN KENNEDY won 21 of those contests and led the team with a 2.88 ERA and 198 strikeouts. He also held batters to a .210 BA at hitter-friendly Chase Field. DANIEL HUDSON was strong in all facets as well, notching 16 wins, 169 K and a 3.49 ERA. He pitches like a seasoned veteran, but he's only 25. Newcomer TREVOR CAHILL was 6-1 with a 1.79 ERA in his first 10 starts before finishing 6-13 with a 5.25 ERA. Don't expect a huge comeback going from a pitcher's park to a hitter's park. The Diamondbacks brought back innings eater JOE SAUNDERS, which closed the door for stud prospect WADE MILEY to begin 2012 in Arizona's starting rotation. Once the first-round draft pick from 2008 cuts down on his walks, everything else should fall into place, and he should be pitching for the big club come September. JOSH COLLMENTER burst on the scene with his crazy delivery and was unhittable in his first six starts (1.05 ERA, 0.76 WHIP). He predictably tailed off, but still led the rotation with a 1.07 WHIP, walking just 28 batters in 154.1 innings. RELIEF PITCHING: Arizona led the majors with 58 saves, as J.J. PUTZ tallied 45 of those. He didn't allow a run in his final 18 appearances, finishing with a 2.17 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 9.5 K per 9 IP. He was unhittable on the road, giving up just one run on nine hits in 24.1 innings (.113 opp. BA). Putz does have a history of being injured, and if he gets hurt again, DAVID HERNANDEZ proved a worthy replacement, saving 11 games last year and posting a strong 10.0 K per 9 IP rate. He held opponents to a meager .193 BA. BRAD ZIEGLER was even better after Arizona acquired him at the deadline. In 23 appearances with the D-backs, the side-arming Ziegler notched a 1.74 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. |

*Rangers-Diamondbacks Preview* ==============================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Texas (32-17) at Arizona (27-22), 9:40 p.m. EDT
The Texas Rangers have ace Yu Darvish lined up to pitch the second game of a doubleheader, and they'll look to continue their hot hitting on the road as they take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in that twinbill Monday.
Darvish will be looking to tie for the major league lead with his eighth win when he opposes Trevor Cahill in the evening. The Diamondbacks were supposed to start another high-profile pitcher in Ian Kennedy in one game of the doubleheader, but a freak accident will leave the first contest in the hands of a pair of spot starters.
The AL-best Rangers (32-18) have won eight of 10 on the road, though they had a four-game winning streak snapped with a 4-3, 13-inning loss at Seattle on Sunday.
Before that defeat, Texas had scored 55 runs in its previous nine contests away from home. The Rangers have hit 20 homers in their last 10 road games.
Darvish (7-2, 2.84 ERA) leads the major leagues with 8.24 runs of support per game, but he didn't get any help in his last start Tuesday. The right-hander gave up one run in six innings but lost 1-0 to Oakland, snapping his six-game winning streak.
"I've been really pampered with all the run support I've been getting," said Darvish, who leads the majors with 91 strikeouts in 66 2-3 innings.
The Rangers need Darvish and first-game starter Martin Perez to give them some length with relievers Neal Cotts, Joe Nathan and Tanner Scheppers likely unavailable following Sunday's extra-inning contest.
Nathan had converted 36 straight save opportunities on the road dating to 2011 before blowing a one-run lead in the 11th inning against the Mariners.
"Hopefully (Martin) Perez and (Yu) Darvish can give us nine innings in each game and everything works out good," manager Ron Washington said.
Arizona, tied with San Francisco for the NL West lead, seeks its fifth win in six home games after beating San Diego 6-5 on Sunday.
Cahill (3-5, 2.81) has given Texas a tough time throughout his career, going 9-4 with a 2.78 ERA in 15 starts. He's tied with Kansas City's James Shields for the lowest ERA against the Rangers among active pitchers with at least 10 starts.
The right-hander has also allowed four or fewer earned runs in 28 straight starts, the longest active streak in baseball.
Cahill kept that run going Wednesday, but he wasn't at his best as he gave up four runs over six innings of a 4-1 loss to Colorado. He had gone 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA in his previous five outings.
Texas' Adrian Beltre is 9 for 26 with two homers versus Cahill, while Nelson Cruz is 4 for 23 against him.
Former 21-game winner Kennedy was scheduled to start one of the games Monday, but he was scratched after cutting his right index finger while doing the dishes. Tyler Skaggs will instead make his season debut in the opener.
After a slow start at Triple-A Reno this season, the left-hander has posted a 2.66 ERA and 22 strikeouts over his last 20 1/3 innings. He went 1-3 with a 5.83 ERA in six starts for Arizona as a rookie last year.
"He's throwing the ball better," manager Kirk Gibson told the team's official website. "I can't tell you exactly what the deciding factor was for picking him, but we made the decision as an organization."
Perez also makes his season debut after going 1-4 with a 5.88 ERA in six starts in 2012. The left-hander pitched seven shutout innings in his last outing with Triple-A Round Rock, but he's posted a 6.05 ERA in four minor league starts this season.
The Rangers have won 17 of 25 overall meetings with the Diamondbacks.
