Rotation: RH Julio Teheran (7-10, 3.21), RH Bartolo Colon (15-8, 3.43 with Mets), LH Jaime Garcia (10-13, 4.67 with Cardinals), RH R.A. Dickey (10-15, 4.46 with Blue Jays), RH Mike Foltynewicz (9-5, 4.31)

Hot spots: Second base and rotation. Phillips, acquired from the Reds in February, is a placeholder for prospect Ozzie Albies at second base. Albies, 20, won the Double-A Southern League batting title in 2016 and is a potential September call-up at least. The rotation is in a similar state of transition, but it's more complicated. Veterans Teheran, Colon, Dickey and Garcia have jobs for now. Youngsters Foltynewicz, Aaron Blair, Matt Wisler, Lucas Sims and Sean Newcomb are pushing to seize long-term spots.
Outlook: In the inaugural season at SunTrust Park, the Braves will try to crack .500 for the first time since 2013. Their rebuilding work isn't finished, but the front office added about $30 million in salary over the winter. That ought to be enough to make the Braves watchable again. Now, the veterans trying to extend their careers in Atlanta (Colon, Dickey, Phillips, Kemp) are almost as intriguing as the prospects. The sight of 23-year-old shortstop Swanson backing up 40-something pitchers Colon and Dickey could be something special.
ARIZONA: 2016: 69-93, fourth place
Manager: Torey Lovullo (first season)
Who's new? C Chris Iannetta, C Jeff Mathis, IF/OF Daniel Descalso, RHP Taijuan Walker, RHP Fernando Rodney, RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, RHP Kevin Jepsen, RHP Tyler Jones
Who's gone? Manager Chip Hale, SS Jean Segura, IF/OF Phil Gosselin, OF Peter O'Brien, C Welington Castillo, C Tuffy Gosewich, OF Rickie Weeks Jr., RHP Daniel Hudson, LHP Edwin Escobar
Projected lineup: CF A.J. Pollock (.244, 2 HR, 4 RBI in 12 games), 3B Jake Lamb (.249, 9, 29), 1B Paul Goldschmidt (.297, 24, 95, 32 SB), RF David Peralta (.251, .4, 15), LF Yasmany Tomas (.272, 31, 83), 2B Brandon Drury (.282, 16, 53), SS Chris Owings (.277, 5, 49, 21 SB), C Chris Iannetta (.210, 7, 24 with Mariners) or Jeff Mathis (.238, 2, 15 with Marlins)
Rotation: RH Zack Greinke (13-7, 4.37 ERA), RH Taijuan Walker (8-11, 4.22), LH Robbie Ray (8-15, 4.90), LH Patrick Corbin (5-13, 5.15), RH Shelby Miller (3-12, 6.15)
Key relievers: RH Fernando Rodney (2-4, 3.44, 25/28 SV with Padres and Marlins), RH Jake Barrett (1-2, 3.49), RH Randall Delgado (5-2, 4.44), LH Andrew Chafin (0-1, 6.75), RH Kevin Jepsen (2-6, 5.98, 7/11 SV with Twins and Rays), RH Tom Wilhelmsen (2-4, 6.80 with Rangers and Mariners)
Hot spots: Rotation and catcher. The Diamondbacks' rotation was atrocious in 2016, ranking 29th in MLB in ERA. But hey, maybe it wasn't all their fault. In his first year as general manager, Mike Hazen installed a 'pitching strategist' (Dan Haren) and three new catchers (former Angels Iannetta, Mathis and Hank Conger). Meanwhile, nine of the 10 pitchers who started a game for the Diamondbacks last year remain in the organization. It's a bold experiment in how to fix a pitching staff. Iannetta and Mathis can frame all the borderline pitches they want. At some point, the onus will fall on Greinke, Ray, Miller, Corbin and newcomer Walker to perform to their potential.
Outlook: It wasn't long ago that Arizona spent $206 million to coax Greinke to defect from the Dodgers. Now the Diamondbacks feel like a team on the brink of a complete rebuild. Even without Jean Segura, who led the National League in hits, the lineup will score enough to keep Arizona competitive. But what to make of the pitching staff? The rotation beyond Greinke could be anywhere from awesome to abysmal. The ninth inning belongs to 39-year-old Rodney and, if he fails, a who's-who list of failed former closers: Wilhelmsen, Jepsen or J.J. Hoover. The farm system is in poor shape. If things get worse before they get better, Greinke could be the first player traded.
PREVIEW
Braves' Blair faces D-backs in Chase Field debut

PHOENIX -- Welcome to Chase Field, Aaron Blair.

Finally.

The Atlanta Braves right-hander was paid a $1,435,000 signing bonus as the No. 36 overall pick by the Diamondbacks in the 2013 draft. However, he never pitched a major league game for Arizona. He was dealt to Atlanta in late 2015, along with outfielder Ender Inciarte and shortstop Dansby Swanson, for currently injured right-hander Shelby Miller.

On Wednesday, Blair finally gets the chance to pitch in the Diamondbacks' home ballpark as he makes his first start of the season for Atlanta. He will be the replacement for left-hander Jaime Garcia, who was traded to the Minnesota Twins on Monday.

Blair had an uneven debut season with Atlanta in 2016, going 2-7 with a 7.59 ERA. However, his last start Oct. 1 against the Detroit Tigers was arguably his best as he gave up two runs, struck out 10 and walked only one in six innings during a 5-3 Braves victory.

No doubt manager Brian Snitker would like to see a repeat performance after Atlanta's 8-3 victory at Arizona on Tuesday night. The Braves can take two out of three in the series by winning Wednesday, which would be an accomplishment for a team that last won a series in Arizona in 2012.

Blair joined the Braves in Los Angeles last weekend in case Garcia was sent to Minnesota and a spot starter was needed. However, the trade didn't go through immediately and Blair returned to Triple-A Gwinnett, where he is 6-5 with a 4.86 ERA this season.

While Blair has faced Arizona only once in his career -- a 7-2 loss on May 6, 2016, in which he gave up three runs (two earned) over five innings -- his Wednesday mound opponent, Patrick Corbin, has a history with the Braves. A very good one, too.

Corbin (7-9, 4.43 ERA) is 3-0 with an 0.59 ERA against Atlanta, yielding only two earned runs in 30 2/3 innings over six games (four starts). Those two runs came July 15 during a five-inning start in Atlanta, when he didn't figure in the decision as the Braves won 8-5.

Corbin's last start might have been his best this season. Moved up in the rotation because Taijuan Walker went on paternity leave for the birth of his son, the left-hander limited Cincinnati to one run over 7 1/3 innings of a 12-2 Arizona victory on Thursday.

"Sometimes you're not thinking about it as much," Corbin said of pitching on short notice. "You just go out there and make your pitches."

Corbin is pitching effectively at Chase Field, where he is 5-3 with a 3.15 ERA. Over his past three starts there, he has a 2.41 ERA.

While manager Torey Lovullo has fielded a number of different lineups this season, the top of the Diamondbacks' order appears to be settling in following last week's trade that brought over right fielder J.D. Martinez from Detroit.

"That's a really good team over there -- you can see why they're where they're at," Snitker said of the NL wild-card leaders.

Martinez was struck in the left hand by a pitch during his first game with Arizona on July 19 and didn't start the next four games. He went back into the lineup Monday, and the past two games, he batted fifth behind left fielder David Peralta, center fielder A.J. Pollock, third baseman Jake Lamb and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. All but Peralta are former or current All-Stars.

It is a lineup that Lovullo probably won't have to tinker with much, except to give a player an occasional day off or to make an adjustment here or there based on the opposing starting pitcher.

"At times I'm very tempted to change some things (as a manager)," Lovullo said. "I'm human like everybody else. I want everything, all at once, right now. But sometimes I have to sit back and say what's the best for the player, what's the best for this team -- and I always remember those moments."
