Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017. | | ARIZONA: 2016: 69-93, fourth place
Manager: Torey Lovullo (first season)
Who's new? C Chris Iannetta, C Jeff Mathis, IF/OF Daniel Descalso, RHP Taijuan Walker, RHP Fernando Rodney, RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, RHP Kevin Jepsen, RHP Tyler Jones
Who's gone? Manager Chip Hale, SS Jean Segura, IF/OF Phil Gosselin, OF Peter O'Brien, C Welington Castillo, C Tuffy Gosewich, OF Rickie Weeks Jr., RHP Daniel Hudson, LHP Edwin Escobar
Projected lineup: CF A.J. Pollock (.244, 2 HR, 4 RBI in 12 games), 3B Jake Lamb (.249, 9, 29), 1B Paul Goldschmidt (.297, 24, 95, 32 SB), RF David Peralta (.251, .4, 15), LF Yasmany Tomas (.272, 31, 83), 2B Brandon Drury (.282, 16, 53), SS Chris Owings (.277, 5, 49, 21 SB), C Chris Iannetta (.210, 7, 24 with Mariners) or Jeff Mathis (.238, 2, 15 with Marlins)
Rotation: RH Zack Greinke (13-7, 4.37 ERA), RH Taijuan Walker (8-11, 4.22), LH Robbie Ray (8-15, 4.90), LH Patrick Corbin (5-13, 5.15), RH Shelby Miller (3-12, 6.15)
Key relievers: RH Fernando Rodney (2-4, 3.44, 25/28 SV with Padres and Marlins), RH Jake Barrett (1-2, 3.49), RH Randall Delgado (5-2, 4.44), LH Andrew Chafin (0-1, 6.75), RH Kevin Jepsen (2-6, 5.98, 7/11 SV with Twins and Rays), RH Tom Wilhelmsen (2-4, 6.80 with Rangers and Mariners)
Hot spots: Rotation and catcher. The Diamondbacks' rotation was atrocious in 2016, ranking 29th in MLB in ERA. But hey, maybe it wasn't all their fault. In his first year as general manager, Mike Hazen installed a 'pitching strategist' (Dan Haren) and three new catchers (former Angels Iannetta, Mathis and Hank Conger). Meanwhile, nine of the 10 pitchers who started a game for the Diamondbacks last year remain in the organization. It's a bold experiment in how to fix a pitching staff. Iannetta and Mathis can frame all the borderline pitches they want. At some point, the onus will fall on Greinke, Ray, Miller, Corbin and newcomer Walker to perform to their potential.
Outlook: It wasn't long ago that Arizona spent $206 million to coax Greinke to defect from the Dodgers. Now the Diamondbacks feel like a team on the brink of a complete rebuild. Even without Jean Segura, who led the National League in hits, the lineup will score enough to keep Arizona competitive. But what to make of the pitching staff? The rotation beyond Greinke could be anywhere from awesome to abysmal. The ninth inning belongs to 39-year-old Rodney and, if he fails, a who's-who list of failed former closers: Wilhelmsen, Jepsen or J.J. Hoover. The farm system is in poor shape. If things get worse before they get better, Greinke could be the first player traded. |
| | Aces face off as D-backs host Pirates
PHOENIX -- After a little bit of a downturn, the Arizona Diamondbacks found their bats Wednesday. The Pirates are still looking for theirs as the teams prepare for the opener of a four-game series on Thursday at Chase Field in a matchup featuring each team's No. 1 starter -- Arizona's Zack Greinke and Pittsburgh's Gerrit Cole. Arizona (19-16) got homers from Nick Ahmed, Yasmany Tomas and Brandon Drury in a 7-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, ending a streak in which the Diamondbacks scored just 29 runs while losing seven of 10. "The bats have been a little quieter than usual lately," said Ahmed, who also doubled, was intentional walked and scored twice Wednesday. "It's good to kind of get the bats going again and get some guys early feeling good at the plate. "We talk about linking our at-bats together and having team at-bats up and down the lineup and not having one guy try to do it all. When we are going good, it is everybody contributing up and down the lineup." Pittsburgh's lineup was silent Wednesday until Francisco Cervelli hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to break up Los Angeles right-hander Kenta Maeda's shutout bid in Dodger Stadium. The Pirates fell 5-2, their fourth consecutive defeat. Cervelli has reached base in 23 of his 25 starts and is hitting .402 (9-for-22) in his past six games. However, he is still batting .250 with three homers and 15 RBIs. "Cervelli has swung the bat pretty well," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "Doesn't have much to show for it." Pittsburgh has lost six of eight but has found success on recent visits in Arizona. The Pirates are 9-4 in the desert since 2013 and have won five of their past six in Chase Field. Greinke is 3-2 with a 3.09 ERA in seven starts this season. He has given up more than two earned runs in a game twice and more than three only once while posting five quality starts, second in the NL. He has made four straight quality starts, giving up seven earned runs in 27 innings for a 2.33 ERA. He has 33 strikeouts and three walks in his past four starts. He is 6-3 with a 5.04 ERA in 10 starts against the Pirates but has faced them only twice in the last three years. Greinke is 13-7 with a 3.94 ERA at Chase Field, and after getting off to a slow start in his first season in Arizona last year, he is 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in four home starts this season. Cole is 1-3 with a 3.14 ERA in seven starts, a deceptive record inasmuch as he has made six straight quality starts since giving up five runs in the season opener at Boston. He is 0-2 with two no-decisions in his last four starts despite a 1.73 ERA in 26 innings. He has given up 15 hits and five walks while striking out 31 in that stretch. The 26-year-old has received one or fewer runs of support in four of his starts. He gave up one run in seven innings in a no-decision in his last start against Milwaukee on Saturday, a game the Pirates won in 10 innings. Cole, a West Coast native who attended UCLA, has feasted on the NL West in his short career. He is 13-4 with a 2.81 ERA in 20 career starts against teams in that division. He is 2-1 with a 2.49 ERA in four starts against Arizona, and he won his only starts at Chase Field, giving up one run in 7 1/3 innings on April 24, 2015. |
