Manager: Bud Black (first season)
Who's new? 1B Ian Desmond, IF Alexi Amarista, RHP Greg Holland, LHP Mike Dunn
Who's gone? Manager Walt Weiss, LHP Jorge De La Rosa, RHP Eddie Butler, LHP Boone Logan, C Nick Hundley, IF Daniel Descalso, OF Ryan Raburn
Projected lineup: CF Charlie Blackmon (.324, 29 HR, 82 RBI, 17 SB), 2B D.J. LeMahieu (.348, 11, 66, 11), 3B Nolan Arenado (.294, 41, 133), RF Carlos Gonzalez (.298, 25, 100), 1B Mark Reynolds (.282, 14, 53), LF David Dahl (.315, 7, 24) or Gerardo Parra (.253, 7, 39), SS Trevor Story (.272, 27, 72), C Tony Wolters (.259, 3, 30)
Rotation: RH Jon Gray (10-10, 4.61 ERA), RH Tyler Chatwood (12-9, 3.87), LH Tyler Anderson (5-6, 3.54), LH Kyle Freeland (6-3, 3.91 at Triple-A), RH German Marquez (1-1, 5.23)
Key relievers: Greg Holland (did not pitch in 2016), Adam Ottavino (1-3, 2.67, 7/12 SV), Mike Dunn (6-1, 3.40, 4/8 SV with Marlins), Jake McGee (2-3, 4.73, 15/19 SV), Jordan Lyles (4-5, 5.83), Chad Qualls (2-0, 5.23), Chris Rusin (3-5, 3.74), Carlos Estevez (3-7, 5.24, 11/18 SV)
Hot spots: Catcher and closer. Wolters was 23 years old and hadn't played a game above Double-A last year when the Rockies claimed him off waivers from Cleveland. Now he's the most experienced catcher on the Rockies' 40-man roster, having played 71 major league games. A pitch-framing specialist with rare agility behind the plate, Wolters must coax pitchers through Coors Field and its occasional malefactions. While Colorado's rotation is the best it's looked in years, the ninth inning could be an adventure. Seven pitchers recorded a save for the Rockies in 2016. Now, a man who hasn't thrown a competitive pitch since 2015 might be their best option. Holland, 31, saved 125 games for the Royals from 2013-15 before elbow surgery paused his career. Ottavino will close if Holland can't.
Outlook: The Rockies probably won't catch the Dodgers or Giants this season, but a .500 record or better would be a big boost for their rebuilding movement. Black skippered the Padres from 2007-15, then spent last year in the Angels' front office. His first task: keeping morale steady after a spate of injuries and illness struck the clubhouse. The Rockies' biggest offseason acquisition was veteran Desmond, but he'll miss the beginning of the season with a fractured hand. Pitcher Chad Bettis, who led the Rockies with 32 starts last year, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. Backup catcher Tom Murphy (hairline fracture in forearm) and outfielder Dahl (ribs) could also start the season on the DL. If they can get past these early hurdles, the Rockies will be competitive at worst and dangerous at best. | | ARIZONA: 2016: 69-93, fourth place
Manager: Torey Lovullo (first season)
Who's new? C Chris Iannetta, C Jeff Mathis, IF/OF Daniel Descalso, RHP Taijuan Walker, RHP Fernando Rodney, RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, RHP Kevin Jepsen, RHP Tyler Jones
Who's gone? Manager Chip Hale, SS Jean Segura, IF/OF Phil Gosselin, OF Peter O'Brien, C Welington Castillo, C Tuffy Gosewich, OF Rickie Weeks Jr., RHP Daniel Hudson, LHP Edwin Escobar
Projected lineup: CF A.J. Pollock (.244, 2 HR, 4 RBI in 12 games), 3B Jake Lamb (.249, 9, 29), 1B Paul Goldschmidt (.297, 24, 95, 32 SB), RF David Peralta (.251, .4, 15), LF Yasmany Tomas (.272, 31, 83), 2B Brandon Drury (.282, 16, 53), SS Chris Owings (.277, 5, 49, 21 SB), C Chris Iannetta (.210, 7, 24 with Mariners) or Jeff Mathis (.238, 2, 15 with Marlins)
Rotation: RH Zack Greinke (13-7, 4.37 ERA), RH Taijuan Walker (8-11, 4.22), LH Robbie Ray (8-15, 4.90), LH Patrick Corbin (5-13, 5.15), RH Shelby Miller (3-12, 6.15)
Key relievers: RH Fernando Rodney (2-4, 3.44, 25/28 SV with Padres and Marlins), RH Jake Barrett (1-2, 3.49), RH Randall Delgado (5-2, 4.44), LH Andrew Chafin (0-1, 6.75), RH Kevin Jepsen (2-6, 5.98, 7/11 SV with Twins and Rays), RH Tom Wilhelmsen (2-4, 6.80 with Rangers and Mariners)
Hot spots: Rotation and catcher. The Diamondbacks' rotation was atrocious in 2016, ranking 29th in MLB in ERA. But hey, maybe it wasn't all their fault. In his first year as general manager, Mike Hazen installed a 'pitching strategist' (Dan Haren) and three new catchers (former Angels Iannetta, Mathis and Hank Conger). Meanwhile, nine of the 10 pitchers who started a game for the Diamondbacks last year remain in the organization. It's a bold experiment in how to fix a pitching staff. Iannetta and Mathis can frame all the borderline pitches they want. At some point, the onus will fall on Greinke, Ray, Miller, Corbin and newcomer Walker to perform to their potential.
Outlook: It wasn't long ago that Arizona spent $206 million to coax Greinke to defect from the Dodgers. Now the Diamondbacks feel like a team on the brink of a complete rebuild. Even without Jean Segura, who led the National League in hits, the lineup will score enough to keep Arizona competitive. But what to make of the pitching staff? The rotation beyond Greinke could be anywhere from awesome to abysmal. The ninth inning belongs to 39-year-old Rodney and, if he fails, a who's-who list of failed former closers: Wilhelmsen, Jepsen or J.J. Hoover. The farm system is in poor shape. If things get worse before they get better, Greinke could be the first player traded. |
| | Rockies-Diamondbacks features matchup between young, old pitchers
PHOENIX -- A wily veteran goes against a youngster in Saturday's second game of the three-game series between National League West leaders Arizona and Colorado. Zach Greinke (2-2, 2.93 ERA) will take the mound for the Diamondbacks vs. the Rockies' Tyler Anderson (1-3, 7.11) Greinke is 7-4 all time vs. the Rockies with a 4.09 ERA in 19 starts. Anderson had two no-decisions in two starts vs. the Diamondbacks in 2016, his rookie season, both losses. He pitched 10 innings against them with a 6.30 ERA. Anderson had a no-decision in the Rockies' 8-4 comeback win Monday vs. Washington. He allowed six hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings. Anderson, manager Bud Black said, has had fine stretches "where he's really strung pitches together and really strung innings together." But he has also been roughed up in "that odd inning or two" that has turned games against him, Black said. "We got to break through that big inning. There's been just a little bit of variable performance inning to inning, not so much game to game. All the games have been sort of the same." Black said he is impressed with the Diamondbacks, "especially offensively. They're swinging the bats. They're scoring early, late." The Rockies will have to continue to be mindful of the Diamondbacks' potent running game. "The best way to combat that is to keep their base-stealers off base," Black said. The Rockies' attention to the Diamondbcks' running game showed up on Friday night when A.J. Pollock reached base on an infield hit in the third inning. Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland made a host of throws to first to tie up Pollock. But in so doing, he ended up walking Chris Owings on four pitches. Then Paul Goldschmidt singled to center to drive in Pollock. In the seventh, Pollock drew a walk from Adam Ottavino, then Ottavino threw the ball away on a throw to first, allowing Pollock to advance to second base. Pollock proceeded to steal third. Ottavino got out of the jam by getting Goldschmidt to ground out to third baseman Nolan Arenado. Earlier, Pollock and Owings executed a double steal in the fifth, but pitcher Kyle Freeland got out of the inning without allowing a run. The Rockies are hoping that outfielder Carlos Gonzalez' slow start is coming to a close. He went 2-for-4 in Friday night's 3-1 win to raise his average to .225. "We're seeing good takes and good swings," Black said of Gonzalez. "I think it's getting closer on Cargo, I really do." The Diamondbacks are hoping to keep their streak alive of winning every home series. They've won their first four home series for the third time in club history (they won the first five in 1999 and 2008). They've been helped by pitching staff that's striking out lots of batters, including a franchise record 51 Ks during the four-game series with the Padres. The Giants also struck out 12 Rockies batters Friday night, making it five straight games they've struck out 11-plus hitters, a first for the franchise. |
