KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''

*Giants-Diamondbacks Preview* =============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

San Francisco (82-66) at Arizona (60-88), 9:40 p.m. EDT

After missing their chance to tighten up the NL West race, the San Francisco Giants will have to find a way to close their deficit on the road.

Facing a team they've recently dominated could move them in the right direction.

The Giants seek their eighth win in nine games against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Monday night's opener to a nine-game trip.

San Francisco (82-67) got within one game of Los Angeles in the division with Friday's 9-0 win over the Dodgers but dropped the final two in that set, including a 17-0 drubbing Saturday. The Dodgers closed the series with a 4-2 win behind ace Clayton Kershaw.

"You hate to lose the series, but there's a lot of baseball left," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We'll try to regroup and get going again."

San Francisco will try to trim its three-game deficit with help from NL MVP candidate Buster Posey, who has 26 of his team-best 85 RBIs in the last 22 games and is batting .461 with a 1.288 OPS.

Posey is hitting .375 with 17 RBIs in his last 18 against Arizona after going 4 for 13 with three RBIs in last week's three-game home sweep of the Diamondbacks.

The Giants are 11-5 versus their NL West rivals and have won 16 of 21 at Chase Field.

Ryan Vogelsong (8-10, 3.90 ERA) will make his second straight start against the Diamondbacks after pitching 6 2-3 scoreless innings Wednesday. He gave up two hits and didn't let a season-high five walks hurt him too much while finishing one out shy of earning his second win in three games.

Vogelsong was tagged for a season-worst eight runs and 10 hits in five innings of a 9-2 loss at Colorado on Sept. 3.

The right-hander has a 1.38 ERA in his last two starts against the Diamondbacks, but has gotten zero runs of support in both games. He took the loss in a 2-0 defeat July 12.

Vogelsong is 1-1 with an 8.16 ERA in his last three starts in Arizona, though he earned a win in his only game there this season, a 6-4 victory June 21.

The Diamondbacks (61-88) batted .301 and scored 23 runs in this weekend's series against San Diego and won the final two games after losing seven in a row - their longest skid in four seasons.

Wade Miley (7-11, 4.28) is 0-4 in his previous seven starts but has a 2.86 ERA in his last six. He has received a combined six runs of support in those outings and was pulled after just two innings in a 5-1 loss in San Francisco on Tuesday.

The left-hander got into a shouting match with manager Kirk Gibson after giving up three runs, five hits and four walks, saying afterward that he was simply aggravated with his performance.

"I just wanted to stay in the game and correct it. That was what I was most frustrated about," Miley said.

Gibson took Trevor Cahill out after four innings Sunday, and the Diamondbacks' bullpen allowed two runs in the final five in an 8-6 victory. Zeke Spruill earned the win by pitching three scoreless innings and helped the bullpen finish with four runs allowed in 13 innings in the series.

Posey is 9 for 22 (.409) in his career against Miley, but is 1 for 7 this season.

Arizona's Aaron Hill, batting .321 in his last eight games, is 13 for 28 (.464) all-time against Vogelsong.
