KEY GAME INFORMATION
COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''

*Rockies-Diamondbacks Preview* ==============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Colorado (53-81) at Arizona (56-78), 8:10 p.m. EDT

With their comeback win in the opener, the Arizona Diamondbacks guaranteed that the Colorado Rockies would remain alone in the NL West cellar throughout this weekend's series.

Vidal Nuno will try to give the Diamondbacks more cushion with another solid outing Saturday night while Colorado's Tyler Matzek seeks to build on his first career road victory.

Arizona (56-78) moved three games in front of Colorado with a 5-2 win Friday as Jake Lamb provided the go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning for his second home run in 16 career games.

The victory was the Diamondbacks' eighth in 25 games this month but seventh in the last eight matchups with the Rockies (53-81), who are tied with Texas for MLB's worst record.

Nuno (0-3, 3.54 ERA) is looking to earn his first win since June 27, when he was with the Yankees. The left-hander has received 18 runs of support in nine starts since being acquired July 6.

He's posted a 2.70 ERA in his last three outings, yielding two runs and two hits in a career-high 7 1-3 innings last Saturday as Arizona beat San Diego 5-2 after losing each of his first eight starts.

"I just try to go deep in the games," Nuno said. "The outcome has been unlucky, but just keep on fighting and I'll get it."

Nuno will make his first start against Colorado, which has lost four straight and 27 of 31 on the road. The Rockies have totaled five runs and 16 hits in those four consecutive defeats.

Matzek (3-9, 5.14) will pitch in Arizona for the second time this month after the rookie left-hander gave up three runs, four hits and walked a career-high five in five innings of a 5-3 loss Aug. 8.

He snapped a five-start losing streak Monday with a 3-2 win in San Francisco, allowing two runs and striking out seven in seven innings. Matzek had an 8.06 ERA in his previous five appearances and was 0-5 with a 6.23 ERA in his prior seven on the road.

"It's good to go out there and help the team win," he said.

Matzek has thrown a career-high 150 2-3 innings for the Rockies and Triple-A Colorado Springs, but there are no plans to limit him the rest of the season, manager Walt Weiss told MLB's official website.

"Arm feels fine," Matzek said. "I had a good offseason this past offseason and built my body up to feel strong, so I'm feeling pretty good right now."

Miguel Montero hit a three-run homer off Matzek earlier this month, one of his three in his last 50 games. He's 4 for 23 in his last seven contests.
