| | | SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.
| | ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss. A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery. Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool. Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth. ''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.'' Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training. ''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''

| | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PA SPORTSTICKER NL PREVIEW (SAN DIEGO-ARIZONA) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Padres-Diamondbacks Preview* =============================
San Diego (59-67) at Arizona (53-75), 9:40 p.m. EDT
Much has changed for the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres since they last met in June.
Odrisamer Despaigne won his second major league start for San Diego in that contest although both these teams' infields will look vastly different now.
The visiting Padres start a three-game set with Despaigne on the mound Friday night as they try to hand the Diamondbacks a season-high seventh straight loss.
Arizona (53-75) has taken six of nine from San Diego, losing 2-1 on the road June 29. Despaigne (3-4, 3.28 ERA) yielded the one run in 6 2-3 innings.
The teams that take the field Friday will look drastically from that day.
Three of the Diamondbacks infielders that started that game won't be available since first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is out with a broken hand, third baseman Martin Prado has been traded and shortstop Nick Ahmed was sent to the minors Aug. 7. Right fielder Gerardo Parra also started in that game and has since been dealt.
San Diego (59-67) started third baseman Chase Headley and shortstop Irving Falu, both of whom are no longer with the team.
One constant for the Padres is Despaigne, who went 2-1 with a 1.31 ERA in his first five outings and is 1-3 with a 5.88 in five since. The right-hander gave up five runs over four innings Sunday in a 7-6 defeat at St. Louis.
"He just couldn't finish off any hitters," manager Bud Black said. "He couldn't get any of his pitches where he needed to get them."
Arizona has totaled 11 runs while hitting .199 in its last six games, as it tries to avoid its first seven-game losing streak since July 22-29, 2010. David Peralta is 5 for 23 in this skid, Aaron Hill is 2 for 19 and Miguel Montero is 3 for 17.
The Diamondbacks capped a 2-8 trip by being swept in four games in Washington. Thursday's 1-0 loss marked their sixth defeat by one run in this stretch.
"That's a credit to our pitching," slugger Mark Trumbo told MLB's official website. "We didn't give them any kind of support. Especially in this series, we didn't get the big hits when we needed whatsoever."
The Padres are making the final stop of a difficult 10-game trip after going 2-5 against two contenders, St. Louis and the Los Angeles Dodgers. They fell 2-1 to Clayton Kershaw and Los Angeles on Thursday.
The three singles San Diego mustered Thursday aren't indicative of an offense that is averaging an NL-best 4.5 runs since the All-Star break.
Seth Smith is hitting .333 since the break and Jedd Gyorko is batting .301 with four homers and 20 RBIs in his last 22 games.
Smith, Will Venable and rookie Jake Goebbert could all be in Friday's lineup after those lefty-swinging hitters did not start against Kershaw.
Smith is 5 for 14 against Diamondbacks right-handed starter Josh Collmenter (8-7, 4.31), who is 0-2 with a 8.50 ERA in his last four outings. Collmenter won his lone 2014 start against the Padres by allowing one run over 5 1-3 innings in a 3-1 victory June 28.
