| | | KANSAS CITY: KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - James Shields thinks back to last year, thoughtfully piecing together what was missing from the Kansas City Royals as they made a late push for the postseason.
The pitching was strong. The offense was coming around. The defense was sublime.
He finally settled on experience.
''These guys that didn't realize or have never been to September, when you're fighting for a playoff spot, now you have that experience,'' Shields said. ''And I think that was one of the things we were lacking last season, the experience. You tend to put too much on your shoulders. And I think the second half we definitely relaxed and put all that aside and had fun and played the game the way we know how to play, and it showed.
''I think with the experience factor now,'' Shields concluded, ''we're ready to go.''
After finishing 86-76 a year ago, and contending into September for the first time in a decade, the Royals have their sets sight squarely on their first playoff appearance since 1985 this year.
Anything less would be a disappointment. Anything less would be a failure.
''Last year was a blast. When the end of the season came in Chicago, nobody wanted to leave,'' first baseman Eric Hosmer said. ''They knew how close we were. We were right there. And it left a good taste in everyone's mouth going into the offseason, knowing how good everyone can be.''
Indeed, the Royals return most of their key players from a year ago, signing left-hander Jason Vargas to replace their only significant loss, starting pitcher Ervin Santana. They also upgraded at their weakest spots, trading for Norichika Aoki to play right field and bat leadoff and signing Omar Infante to settle a second base position that has been a black hole for years.
All of which left the notoriously frugal franchise with a record-setting payroll.
Royals manager Ned Yost hopes all those moves will pay off for a rotation that was among the league's best last year, and an offense that was among the league's worst.
''It's going to be a lineup that has offensive sequence from one to nine. You're not going to have any dead spots,'' Yost said. ''You're not going to get something going and then bam, run into a wall and have to get going again. At least, I hope not. I don't think so.''
So with more experience and an upgraded lineup, Kansas City enters its season opener Sunday at Detroit with boundless enthusiasm. | | ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss. A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery. Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool. Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth. ''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.'' Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training. ''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''

*Royals-Diamondbacks Preview* =============================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Kansas City (57-53) at Arizona (49-63), 9:40 p.m. EDT
With their injured star done for the season, the Arizona Diamondbacks face an even tougher task against a surging Kansas City Royals club that's pitching well off late.
The Diamondbacks continue on minus first baseman Paul Goldschmidt on Tuesday night against the visiting Royals.
Arizona manager Kirk Gibson announced Sunday that Goldschmidt would miss the rest of the season after he suffered a broken left hand from a pitch thrown by Pittsburgh's Ernesto Frieri two nights earlier. With the Diamondbacks (49-63) near the bottom of the NL, the club is thinking about Goldschmidt's long-term health.
"Realistically it's eight weeks," Gibson told MLB's official website. "So he's done.
"If you rush it, then you end up injuring it and you displace the fracture. I think you're looking at worse things."
The 2013 NL MVP runner-up, Goldschmidt hit .300 and also led the team in most offensive categories, including homers (19), RBIs (69), walks (64) and on-base percentage (.396).
Gibson plans to rotate players at first base.
"A little bit of a trial and error to see how it works," he said. "It's going to be hard to replace Goldy over there with what he brought us with his consistency."
Jordan Pacheco seems to be one option after playing there Friday and Saturday, and Mark Trumbo got the start at first during Sunday's 3-2, 10-inning victory. He went 5 for 15 versus Pittsburgh to raise his dismal average to .204.
Getting an offense that's missing its biggest piece going could be difficult against the Royals (57-53), whose pitchers have a 2.81 ERA while winning nine of 12. Kansas City was outscored 10-8 at Oakland over the weekend, but still took two of three from baseball's best team.
"As far as I'm concerned, we can match up with anyone, any team, any starting rotation," James Shields told MLB's official website after he allowed two homers in eight innings of a 4-2 victory Sunday.
"I don't care who it is. I believe in our guys. We're going to compete with anybody."
Kansas City's Danny Duffy (5-10, 2.42 ERA) is 2-5 with a 1.74 ERA in his last nine starts, and received just eight runs of support in the last eight. Three of those came while he went 0-3 with a 2.01 ERA in five July outings, but none in the last two.
He allowed a homer, three other hits and overcame a career-high six walks over 5 2-3 innings of a 3-2 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday.
"I'm just very, very grateful to be a part of this team," the left-hander said.
The Diamondbacks counter with Wade Miley (7-7, 4.14), who gave up seven hits over 6 2-3 scoreless innings of a 5-4 win at Cincinnati on Wednesday to finish 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA in six July starts.
"As a starter, you've got to find a way to keep `em at bay," Miley said.
The left-hander was just as strong while giving up six hits in seven innings of a 2-0 win in his only appearance against the Royals in 2012.
Leadoff hitter Nori Aoki is 5 for 14 with a double and triple versus Miley, and batting .326 in his last 11 games.
