KEY GAME INFORMATION
DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - When Justin Verlander takes the mound for Detroit on opening day, maybe then the Tigers will be able to enjoy a much-needed sense of normalcy.
As an offseason of drama gave way to spring training injuries, it was easy to forget the Tigers still have one of the most talented rosters in baseball. Sure, there have been some early problems for new manager Brad Ausmus to address, Detroit still figures to be the favorite to win its fourth consecutive AL Central title.
''We have a new look this year,'' outfielder Torii Hunter said. ''Little bit more speed and we'll miss the big man, but we'll score some runs.''
The ''big man'' is Prince Fielder, whom the Tigers traded to Texas in a blockbuster deal that brought second baseman Ian Kinsler to Detroit. That move gave the Tigers more financial flexibility, although they weren't all that aggressive in pursuing free agents. Detroit did sign Joe Nathan to replace departed closer Joaquin Benoit.
The Tigers also traded right-hander Doug Fister to Washington.
Lately, the focus has been on right-hander Max Scherzer, who enters his final season before free agency after winning the Cy Young Award in 2013. Negotiations with the Tigers on a long-term deal have stalled.
''They respect where I'm at. I respect where they're at, and we'll revisit this after the season,'' Scherzer said. ''I still want to be in Detroit. I love this clubhouse and everything about it. There's been a history of this team signing free agents so hopefully I'll be a part of that history as well.''
But right now Scherzer's future is uncertain, and with Hunter and Victor Martinez in the final season of their contracts, it's hard to say what Detroit's 2015 roster will look like.
So the Tigers may never have a better chance to win a World Series with this group than right now.
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''

*Tigers-Diamondbacks Preview* =============================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Detroit (55-41) at Arizona (43-57), 3:40 p.m. EDT

While in the midst of a rough season overall, the Arizona Diamondbacks continue to be rewarded for their recent resiliency.

Coming off another comeback victory, the Diamondbacks can win their third straight home series Wednesday against the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers.

Miguel Montero hit a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth inning Tuesday as Arizona (44-57) erased three one-run deficits to even the set with a 5-4 victory.

"It was a great win," Montero said. "We battled."

Despite trailing in every contest, the Diamondbacks are 4-1 on this six-game homestand. They fell behind 3-0 on Monday, but tied the game before losing 4-3 to Detroit (55-42), which has dropped five of seven since winning five in a row.

Rookie David Peralta, batting .397 in his last 16 contests, tied an Arizona record with two triples and second baseman Aaron Hill homered for one of his three RBIs. Hill also made a diving stop on the last out of the game to send the Diamondbacks to their eighth win in 12 contests.

Hill is batting .407 with two home runs in the last seven games. The ex-Blue Jay is hitting .333 in his last nine against the Tigers.

"He's played great," manager Kirk Gibson said. "He's been working hard out there and I've said you get validation for your hard work."

Trevor Cahill (1-6, 5.63 ERA) will make his second appearance since being called up from the minors July 14. He allowed two of his three runs on a homer in five innings while not factoring in the decision of a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday in his first start since April 13.

"(Friday) was a good starting point," Gibson told MLB's official website.

The right-hander was dropped from the rotation after starting 0-4 with a 9.17 ERA, and was designated for assignment June 9 before spending more than a month in the minors.

"Still kind of a work in progress," Cahill said. "Felt good out of the windup, but the stretch doesn't feel as comfortable - still making improvements."

He hasn't faced the Tigers since 2011, but went 2-2 with a 4.15 ERA in five starts against them with Oakland.

Miguel Cabrera is 2 for 11 against him but has gone 4 for 8 in this series with two RBIs.

Detroit's Anibal Sanchez (6-4, 3.22) went 4-2 with a 2.33 ERA in his first 12 starts, but he has a 5.23 ERA in the last five. After allowing a run in seven innings of a 2-1 victory at Kansas City in his final outing before the All-Star break, Sanchez returned Friday to give up four runs in six innings of a 9-3 loss to Cleveland.

The right-hander has a 2.15 ERA in six interleague starts since the Tigers acquired him from Miami at the 2012 trade deadline.

Sanchez has not faced the Diamondbacks since 2012 but is 3-1 with a 3.51 ERA in six starts against them.

Arizona's Martin Prado and Gerardo Parra are batting a combined .428 (18 for 42) versus Sanchez.
