KEY GAME INFORMATION
BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 42-31-9, 93 points. Fourth in Atlantic Division. Failed to qualify for Stanley Cup Playoffs.
COACH: Claude Julien (10th season, 14th NHL season)
ADDED: F David Backes, F Riley Nash, F Dominic Moore, G Anton Khudobin.
LOST: F Loui Eriksson, G Jonas Gustavsson, D Dennis Seidenberg.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Brad Marchand. If the 37 goals Marchand scored for the Bruins last season wasn't enough to catch the attention of the entire NHL, he definitely alerted everyone to his status as an elite talent during the recent World Cup of Hockey. Playing for victorious Team Canada, Marchand led the tournament with five goals in six games. He also scored the game-winning short-handed goal in the third period of the decisive second game of the best-of-three finals against Team Europe. During the tournament, the Bruins made sure Marchand wouldn't be leaving as an unrestricted free agent next summer by signing him to an eight-year, $49 million contract. Marchand has matured at both ends of the ice and there's no telling how much more he could improve in the next few seasons.
OUTLOOK: The Bruins seem to be caught between rebuilding and contending as they come off two straight seasons without qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs by a combined three points. With Backes their only major addition during the offseason, the Bruins are banking on the continued improvement or some of their younger players and the emergence of a couple prospects to turn their fortunes around. Boston again looks like a bubble team that will be playing for its life right down to the final weekend of the season.
DETROIT: LAST SEASON: 34-40-8, 76 points. Last in the Metropolitan Division, missed the playoffs.
COACH: John Tortorella, second year, 34-32-8
ADDED: C Sam Gagner, D Scott Harrington, LW Pierre-Luc Dubois.
LOST: RW Rene Bourque, RW Jared Boll, D Fedor Tyutin, D Justin Falk, LW Kerby Rychel.
PLAYER TO WATCH: LW Brandon Saad. Acquired in a trade with Chicago before last season, the 23-year-old Saad scored 31 goals and added 22 assists for 53 points, all career highs. He and center Boone Jenner were among the few bright spots in the team's dismal season last year. That pair, along with right wing Cam Atkinson will make a potent first line.
OUTLOOK: Columbus made no blockbuster deals in the off-season, meaning it is starting the season with the same group of players that made it one of the NHL's sad sacks last year. But team president John Davidson believes his players will perform up to their potential under Tortorella, who replaced Todd Richards after seven games last season. He's also ready to tap into the talented pool of players that helped the Lake Erie Monsters win the AHL's Calder Cup. A fully healthy Sergei Bobrovsky in the net will be a huge boost. Still, everything will have to click just right to get the Blue Jackets to the playoffs.

Coreau, Red Wings look to remain hot vs. Bruins

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings are looking for their first three-game winning streak since October, while the Boston Bruins are searching for answers.

Detroit (19-19-6) hosts Boston (23-18-5) at Joe Louis Arena for an 8 p.m. game on Wednesday.

The Red Wings are coming off a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday and a 1-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens two days later.

Rookie goalie Jared Coreau made 18 saves against Montreal for his second career shutout and Thomas Vanek scored the game's only goal. It was Vanek's team-leading 12th tally of the season.

"There's no question that we know where those teams are in the standings," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill told www.mlive.com. "So when you're able to beat those teams -- and I think in a lot of ways outplay them -- you walk out and say, 'When we play the right way, we can be a pretty good hockey team.'

"Now, I think we know that but it certainly helps when you have results."

Captain Henrik Zetterberg said now Detroit has to keep it going against the Bruins.

"Boston comes in next game, so another tough opponent," he said. "We just got to keep doing these things and play well out there and then we have a chance of winning games."

The Bruins canceled practice to "regroup" after a 4-0 loss to the New York Islanders at home on Monday.

"We can look at our players and maybe it's not as good as it was," Boston coach Claude Julien told CBS Boston. "But it's still not as big a reason to lose games like you do at home -- it's unacceptable. Our teams are prepared the same way on the road as they are at home, so there's got to be something that's got to be better and we're certainly working on trying to make our team better at home. Because somehow, the preparation is the same but the results aren't the same."

Boston had just come off a 3-1-1 road trip.

"I still believe in this group. I never have not believed in this group," Julien said. "Having said that, I think they also understand there's work to be done and there are challenges ahead."

Boston snapped Detroit's six-game winning on Oct. 29, with a 1-0 win at Joe Louis Arena.

Vanek has a six-game point streak, in which he has five goals and four assists.

"He creates a lot out of nothing," Zetterberg said about Vanek.

Vanek has 30 points, which is second to Zetterberg's 31 for the team lead.

Coreau, who was also in goal in the win over Pittsburgh, is 5-1-1 with a 2.70 goals-against average and .911 save percentage.
