| | | BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 42-31-9, 93 points. Fourth in Atlantic Division. Failed to qualify for Stanley Cup Playoffs.
COACH: Claude Julien (10th season, 14th NHL season)
ADDED: F David Backes, F Riley Nash, F Dominic Moore, G Anton Khudobin.
LOST: F Loui Eriksson, G Jonas Gustavsson, D Dennis Seidenberg.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Brad Marchand. If the 37 goals Marchand scored for the Bruins last season wasn't enough to catch the attention of the entire NHL, he definitely alerted everyone to his status as an elite talent during the recent World Cup of Hockey. Playing for victorious Team Canada, Marchand led the tournament with five goals in six games. He also scored the game-winning short-handed goal in the third period of the decisive second game of the best-of-three finals against Team Europe. During the tournament, the Bruins made sure Marchand wouldn't be leaving as an unrestricted free agent next summer by signing him to an eight-year, $49 million contract. Marchand has matured at both ends of the ice and there's no telling how much more he could improve in the next few seasons.
OUTLOOK: The Bruins seem to be caught between rebuilding and contending as they come off two straight seasons without qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs by a combined three points. With Backes their only major addition during the offseason, the Bruins are banking on the continued improvement or some of their younger players and the emergence of a couple prospects to turn their fortunes around. Boston again looks like a bubble team that will be playing for its life right down to the final weekend of the season. | | BUFFALO: LAST SEASON: 35-36-11, 81 points. Finished 23rd in NHL after two consecutive last-place finishes, and missed playoffs for fifth consecutive season.
COACH: Dan Bylsma (second season, eighth NHL season)
ADDED: F Kyle Okposo, D Dmitry Kulikov, G Anders Nilsson.
LOST: F David Legwand, D Mark Pysyk, G Chad Johnson.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jack Eichel. Selected with the No. 2 pick in the 2015 draft behind Edmonton's Connor McDavid, Eichel finished second among NHL rookies with 56 points (24 goals, 32 assists). The 19-year-old displayed breakaway speed and a powerful shot. Eichel is being counted upon to become more consistent now that he has a full season behind him. Eichel went through an 11-game slump spanning November and December, during which he combined for a goal and three assists.
OUTLOOK: The expectations are higher for a Sabres team that made the jump from rock bottom to being relevant by finishing 23rd last season following two consecutive last place finishes. Though missed playoffs for fifth consecutive year, Buffalo showed signs of jelling by closing last year with a 16-10-7 run. Additions of Okposo and Kulikov adds experienced top-line depth to young core. Big question mark is whether G Robin Lehner can establish himself as trusted starter after two injury-shortened seasons. |
| | Eichel leads energized Sabres vs. Bruins
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Jack Eichel has returned for the Buffalo Sabres, and as a result so has their scoring. The league's lowest scoring team has been playing at an entirely different level since the superstar sophomore returned on Tuesday. Eichel missed the first 21 games of the season with a high ankle sprain and has reignited Buffalo's offensive attack. Eichel had a goal and an assist in his first game of the season, helping to lead the Sabres to a 5-4 road win over the Ottawa Senators. He was even better in Buffalo's 4-3 win over the New York Rangers on Thursday night. Eichel had two late goals in the third period to lift the Sabres over the top team in the Metropolitan Division. The Sabres (9-9-5) will look for more of the same in a matinee matchup against the Boston Bruins (13-10-1) at 1 p.m. on Saturday. "He's a difference-maker. He can open up a game at any time," Sabres captain Brian Gionta said of Eichel. "He's feared out there. He's a threat every time he's on the ice. You have to be aware of him. Other teams have to be aware of him, and it gets them back on their heels. Eichel has added a much-needed dose of speed along with a pure scoring touch that has been lacking for the Sabres for much of this season. "It just kind of shows what kind of player he can be, what kind of player he is," Sabres head coach Dan Bylsma said. "He's a dynamic player and he brings so much to our team with speed and attack. And everyone feeds off it." The Sabres may be without one of their top defensemen against the Bruins. Veteran Josh Gorges was injured blocking a shot in the win over the Rangers. "He got an X-ray after the game, he's going to get some more testing on it," Bylsma said, according to the team's website. "We're just kind of waiting to see the results of the next test." Robin Lehner will return between the pipes for Buffalo after suffering a hip injury on Tuesday against the Senators. Lehner has a record of 5-7-0 this season to go along with a save percentage of .921 and a goals against average of 2.40. The Bruins are coming off a 2-1 shootout win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday. Ryan Spooner and David Pastrnak scored in the shootout for Boston, and Anton Khudobin was terrific in net after missing time this season with an upper-body injury. Torey Krug tied the game for Boston with 31.5 seconds remaining in regulation. "It wasn't our prettiest game, it wasn't necessarily a good game by our standards. But those are goals throughout the season you feel like you earned and you deserved," Krug said. "So we worked and we worked, and it didn't matter how long it took in the third. Ultimately, it would pay off, and it did." Brad Marchand leads the Bruins in scoring with 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists) in 24 games. |
