|
| | | NY ISLANDERS: LAST SEASON: 34-37-11, 79 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing eighth in Metropolitan Division and 14th in Eastern Conference.
COACH: Jack Capuano, fifth season with Islanders (118-120-39).
ADDED: G Jaroslav Halak, G Chad Johnson, C Cory Conacher, RW Jack Skille, LW Harry Zolnierczyk, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Nikolai Kulemin.
LOST: G Evgeni Nabokov, D Radek Martinek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: John Tavares. The 24-year-old star center with the C on his sweater is back after missing New York's final 22 games last season due to a knee injury sustained while playing for Canada in the Olympics. He was second on the team with 66 points - including 24 goals - despite playing in only 59 games. The Islanders have made the playoffs only once (2013) since he was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft.
OUTLOOK: This will be a year of nostalgia for the Islanders as they play their final season at the Nassau Coliseum - their home since joining the NHL in 1972 where four straight Stanley Cup champions were built from 1980-83. They will move to Brooklyn's Barclays Center next season. Since 2004, the Islanders have reached the playoffs just twice (2007 and 2013) and were eliminated in the first round both times. The task doesn't get any easier in the eight-team Metropolitan Division with perennial powerhouse Pittsburgh and the rival New York Rangers, who reached the Stanley Cup finals last season. Halak will shoulder a lot of the burden, along with Tavares, as he replaces veteran Evgeni Nabokov in goal. | | WASHINGTON: LAST SEASON: 38-30-14, 90 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Barry Trotz, 1st season with Capitals; 16th overall in NHL, 557-479-60-100.
ADDED: Trotz, GM Brian MacLellan, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen, G Justin Peters.
LOST: Coach Adam Oates, GM George McPhee, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Dustin Penner, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met. |

*Islanders-Capitals Preview* ============================
Ny Islanders At Washington, Game Seven, 7:30 p.m. EDT
There's only been one Game 7 between the Capitals and Islanders, but it's stood the test of time - lots and lots and lots of time - as one of the great games in postseason annals.
The "Easter Epic" in 1987 between Washington and New York lasted long into the night before Pat LaFontaine finally won it for the Islanders in the fourth overtime, giving his team a 3-2 victory in the game and a 4-3 win in the first-round series. New York's Kelly Hrudey made 73 saves in what is still the longest Game 7 in NHL history.
Those two teams will play another Game 7 in Washington on Monday night - the first winner-take-all contest of this year's postseason.
The Capitals and Islanders both finished the regular season with 101 points, and they've both found time to score 14 goals through the first six games of this series - when they haven't been busy trying to slam each other into the glass.
"It's been good," Washington forward Joel Ward said. "A traditional series, regardless of who you're playing, is going to be like that. You're going to get some hits, you're going to get some feistiness, you're going to get some whacks. That's what happens when you play the same (team) over and over, you're going to have a little hatred. It's coming down to one game, so we're excited."
The Islanders forced this seventh game with a 3-1 win in Game 6 on Saturday.
LaFontaine's goal was part of a glorious stretch for the Islanders during the 1980s that included four consecutive Stanley Cups earlier that decade. But they've advanced past the first round only once since then. That was in 1993, when they again eliminated Washington before edging Pittsburgh in another overtime Game 7 to reach the conference finals.
The Capitals had never played a Game 7 until that 1987 matchup with the Islanders. Now, the franchise is used to it.
Monday will be Washington's eighth Game 7 in the last eight years. Only Boston (nine) has played more in that span.
The Capitals are 3-9 in Game 7s, and only 2-7 at home. That includes that night 28 years ago when Game 7 turned into Game 8 and then Game 9.
New York's Game 6 victory not only extended this series, but the Islanders also hope it means more hockey at Nassau Coliseum. With the team set to move to Brooklyn next season, a loss Monday would mean the franchise's time at the outdated arena will have come to an end.
A victory, though, would set up a second-round meeting with the top-seeded New York Rangers and the rivals' first postseason matchup since 1994.
"I can't wait for tomorrow," Islanders center Frans Nielsen told the team's official website. "These are the kind of games you dream about when you're a kid. Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs."
New York doesn't have many players with Game 7 experience, but three of the few that do are among its most important players.
Johnny Boychuk won the Stanley Cup with Boston after a Game 7 win over Vancouver in 2011, and fellow defenseman Nick Leddy beat Detroit in Game 7 in 2013 while with Chicago. Goaltender Jaroslav Halak won two Game 7s in the 2010 playoffs with Montreal, posting a .963 save percentage in those games.
Halak has a 2.34 goals-against average in this series, holding the Capitals to two goals or fewer four times.
"(Jaro's) probably going to have to be our best player," coach Jack Capuano said. "The teams that go on and the teams that are successful, it starts in the goal. He's been there before, he knows what it takes and I'm very confident."
Washington's Braden Holtby has been even better, posting a 1.75 GAA and yielding more than two goals only once in the six games.
He's also been helped by a penalty-killing unit that has denied the Islanders on all 13 power-play opportunities.
