| | | MONTREAL: LAST SEASON: 46-28-8, 100 points; lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference final.
COACH: Michel Therrien, seventh season with Canadiens, 287-224-23-58.
ADDED: D Tom Gilbert, C Manny Malhotra, RW P.A. Parenteau, RW Jiri Sekac.
LOST: C Daniel Briere, RW Brian Gionta, D Josh Gorges, LW Thomas Vanek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: P.K. Subban: The 43rd overall pick in the 2007 draft solidified his status as a top-five defenseman in the NHL following a 2013-14 regular season in which he recorded 53 points (10 goals, 43 assists) in 82 games, and added another 11 (five goals and six assists) in 17 playoff games. And he isn't going anywhere. The Canadiens and Subban agreed to an eight-year, $72 million contract in the offseason.
OUTLOOK: The Canadiens earned the ire of playoff foes Boston and New York for on-ice antics and their off-ice loquaciousness. But teams don't dislike opponents who aren't good. The Canadiens are just that, and should find themselves in the playoffs come April. | | WINNIPEG: LAST SEASON: 37-35-10, 84 points; finished 11th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Paul Maurice, second season with the Jets, 478-469-99-73 overall.
ADDED: C Mathieu Perreault.
LOST: C Olli Jokinen, G Al Montoya.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Evander Kane: The 23-year old is entering his sixth NHL season, all with the Thrashers/Jets franchise. But the question surrounding Kane isn't where he'll start the season. Rather it's where he'll finish. Kane's name has been linked in trade rumors, leading the left winger to tell a Vancouver radio station in July he will operate under the assumption he is ''a Winnipeg Jet.''
OUTLOOK: The Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise has not qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs since the 2006-07 season. That probably won't change in 2014-15. |

*Canadiens-Jets Preview* ========================
Montreal (46-20-8) at Winnipeg (38-24-12), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The Montreal Canadiens are the first team to reach 100 points, though finishing on top of the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference are still far from certain.
The Winnipeg Jets are just trying to hang onto the West's final wild-card spot.
The Canadiens have taken 10 of the last 12 meetings and will clinch a playoff spot with another victory Thursday night in Winnipeg.
Montreal (46-20-8) lost 3-2 in overtime at Nashville on Tuesday to reach 100 points for the second straight season. The Canadiens, who haven't had more points since gaining 104 in 2007-08, lead Tampa Bay by one in the division race and the Metropolitan Division-leading Rangers by one, though New York has two games in hand on those clubs.
Brendan Gallagher scored for the third straight game and David Desharnais had the other one as Montreal's three-game win streak ended.
"We like the game and the effort we gave against Nashville, but not the result," star winger Max Pacioretty told the Canadiens' official website. "We're just going to worry about Winnipeg now."
The Jets (38-24-12) start a difficult four-game homestand after splitting two on the road, winning 4-1 over Edmonton on Monday and losing 5-2 to Vancouver the next night. Fatigue played a factor against the Canucks, as Winnipeg led by two goals midway through the contest before collapsing.
"We were as good we were physically able to be in that game," coach Paul Maurice said.
Winnipeg has a two-point lead over Los Angeles for the West's last wild card.
Maurice started Michael Hutchinson in the second game of that back-to-back and figures to turn back to Ondrej Pavelec, who looks to win six straight starts for the first time since Nov. 19-30, 2010. Pavelec has posted a 0.98 goals-against average in his current run, though he's registered a 3.74 GAA in dropping seven straight against Montreal.
The Canadiens figure to give the start to Carey Price, who leads the league with 40 wins and a 1.88 GAA. He's two victories shy of the club record shared by Hall of Famers Jacques Plante and Ken Dryden.
Price is 9-2-0 with a 1.55 GAA in his last 11 starts versus the Jets with three shutouts in his past six. He made 29 saves in a 3-0 home win Nov. 11.
Winnipeg continues to play without Bryan Little, tied with Andrew Ladd for the team lead with 24 goals, and Dustin Byfuglien, who tops all Jets defensemen with 42 points. Both could return from upper-body injuries.
"Possibly, there's slow healing on this," Maurice said. "It's injuries that take whiles for recovery, you just kinda gotta wait for it."
Blake Wheeler has 13 points over his last 11 games for the Jets, who have won three straight at home.
Pacioretty has four points in a three-game run and Tomas Plekanec has seven in his last six for Montreal, which is averaging 2.00 goals this month for the NHL's fifth-worst mark.
Canadiens defenseman Tom Gilbert will miss a second straight game after being hit in the mouth by the puck in Saturday's 2-0 win over San Jose.
