PLAYER TO WATCH: G Pekka Rinne. Even with Ribeiro needing to prove his personal issues have been handled, Rinne is the two-time Vezina Trophy finalist who anchors Nashville's defense. He only played 24 games last season after an infection in his surgically-repaired hip needed more surgery, keeping him on crutches for weeks. Rinne went 3-0-1 in his final four games and was the MVP of the World Championships.
OUTLOOK: The Predators missed the playoffs by three points with Rinne missing much of last season. Laviolette is expected to boost the Predators' offense and take advantage of the experienced forwards added during the offseason, and general manager David Poile has made it clear they must reach the playoffs. | | TAMPA BAY: LAST SEASON: 46-27-9, 101 points. PLAYER TO WATCH: Ondrej Palat. One of the NHL's top rookies last season. With Steven Stamkos missing a significant portion of the year and Martin St. Louis departing in a late-season trade, Palat finished with team-leading 50 points, including 23 goals. Third among league rookies in goals and second in points, he led all rookies with 44 points after Jan. 1.
OUTLOOK: With Bishop healthy again after missing the playoffs with a dislocated elbow, many expect the Lightning to prosper in the relatively weak Eastern Conference and make a deep run in the playoffs. Stamkos has scored more goals (210) than any player in the league since the start of the 2009-10 season and Bishop is coming off a season in which he set franchise season records for wins (37), save percentage (.924) and goals-against average (2.23). |

Inconsistent play over the last six weeks dropped the Nashville Predators from their perch atop the NHL, but a hard-fought win against the league's most dominant goaltender has them again rising in the standings.
Another quality win Thursday night would only boost that momentum, although it won't come easy against a Tampa Bay Lightning team looking to clinch consecutive 100-point seasons for the first time in franchise history.
Nashville (45-21-8) had six more points than any other team in the league Feb. 24 before posting a 2-8-1 record over the next 11 contests, which included a season-worst six-game losing streak.
The Predators scored more than two goals twice in that 11-game stretch but have managed three in each of the last two, beating Buffalo and Montreal to move back within two points in the race for the Presidents' Trophy.
They knocked off the team leading that charge Tuesday with a 3-2 overtime win over the Canadiens. Ryan Ellis tied it in the third and Filip Forsberg scored his first goal in 13 games to beat Hart Trophy front-runner Carey Price in the extra period.
"I like the fight. I like the battle, coming back in the third period and sticking with it. Those were really big points for us tonight," coach Peter Laviolette said.
"We went through a stretch where I thought we were playing well enough to win the games, and they were against playoff teams. It just wasn't happening. We knew Montreal would be a big game ... they've had an excellent season, but I think our guys are pretty confident that we can be successful even when we're down in the third."
Forsberg's re-emergence could prove especially valuable to the Predators. The rookie right wing, who had 21 goals in the first 61 games, is tied with Mike Ribeiro for the team lead with 56 points despite having four in the last 13 contests.
Nashville is 16-3-2 when Forsberg scores.
Tampa Bay (46-21-7) is also in hot pursuit of the league's top point total and has made a solid push with an 8-1-1 record in its last 10.
Ondrej Palat has 10 points in that span despite missing three contests with a lower-body injury, and he has five points in three games since returning.
After knocking off Florida 4-3 on Tuesday, Palat and the Lightning need one point to reach 100. The Lightning, who had 101 points in 2013-14, have never won more than 46 games.
"I think our goal now is to try to win the Presidents' Trophy for the best record in the league," goaltender Ben Bishop told the Lightning's official website. "That's our goal, that's what we're going to try to do. At the end of the day, wherever we fall, we fall. I don't think we can expect anything less than trying to win every game."
Bishop is 5-0-1 with a 1.64 goals-against average in his last six starts. Pekka Rinne, his likely counterpart Thursday, made 27 saves Tuesday and earned his fourth shutout Saturday against Buffalo, shaking off a 3-8-2 record and 2.72 GAA in his previous 13 starts.
Rinne is 3-0-0 against the Lightning in his career despite a 2.93 GAA. He stopped 30 shots in a 3-2 overtime win Feb. 10.
Tampa Bay center Cedric Paquette had hoped to rejoin the lineup Thursday, but he remains out with an upper-body injury and likely will not return until the weekend.
