| | | NASHVILLE: LAST SEASON: 38-32-12, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Western Conference.
COACH: Peter Laviolette, 1st season with Predators, 389-282-25-63 overall.
ADDED: F James Neal, F Olli Jokinen, F Mike Ribeiro, F Derek Roy.
LOST: Coach Barry Trotz, goaltenders coach Mitch Korn, F Patric Hornqvist, F Nick Spaling.
PLAYER TO WATCH: G Pekka Rinne. Even with Ribeiro needing to prove his personal issues have been handled, Rinne is the two-time Vezina Trophy finalist who anchors Nashville's defense. He only played 24 games last season after an infection in his surgically-repaired hip needed more surgery, keeping him on crutches for weeks. Rinne went 3-0-1 in his final four games and was the MVP of the World Championships.
OUTLOOK: The Predators missed the playoffs by three points with Rinne missing much of last season. Laviolette is expected to boost the Predators' offense and take advantage of the experienced forwards added during the offseason, and general manager David Poile has made it clear they must reach the playoffs. | | NEW JERSEY: LAST SEASON: 35-29-18, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Peter DeBoer, 4th season with Devils (102-76-34); 7th overall in NHL (205-183-70).
ADDED: LW Mike Cammalleri, LW Martin Havlat, C Scott Gomez, G Scott Clemmensen.
LOST: G Martin Brodeur, D Anton Volchenkov, D Mark Fayne.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jaromir Jagr. Led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 43 assists in remarkable season in which he played in all 82. Can he do it again at 42-years-old. If he does, the Devils have a shot at getting back into the playoffs for the first time since reaching NHL Finals in 2011-12.
OUTLOOK: After finishing with fourth fewest goals in the league, the Devils hope free-agent signees Cammalleri (26 goals) and Havlat (12 goals in 48 games) can boost the scoring, along with Adam Henrique, who scored a career-high 25-goals last season. With Broduer not re-signed, Cory Schnedier will get most of the work in goal after posting a 1.97 goals against average in 46 games last season. Defense allowed 208 goals, ninth best in the league. |

*Predators-Devils Preview* ==========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Nashville (41-16-7) at New Jersey (26-27-10), 7:00 p.m. EDT
The Nashville Predators are in the midst of their longest losing streak in a year, and suffering a second defeat in 24 hours could cost them sole possession of the overall NHL lead.
The Predators attempt to snap a three-game skid by sweeping the season series from the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night at the Prudential Center.
Nashville (41-16-7) leads the race for the Presidents' Trophy by two points on Anaheim and idle Montreal. With the Ducks visiting Arizona, the Predators will try to at least maintain that distance and avoid a four-game slide for the first time since their first four games last March.
They'd gone since the middle of that month without dropping three straight until Monday, when they gave up the first two goals and never quite recovered in a 4-1 loss at the New York Rangers.
"Anytime you lose a game you're concerned," center Matt Cullen said. "We have an eye on the big picture but at the same time we need to focus on what we have here. We need to dig ourselves out of it.
"We're not playing as well as we can."
Cullen seems to be, collecting six points during a four-game streak and scoring in two straight.
Filip Forsberg hasn't been nearly that productive with just two goals in nine games and no points in three. The right wing still leads all rookies with 52 points, but he failed to get any while Cullen, Colin Wilson and Craig Smith had one apiece in a 3-1 victory over New Jersey on Feb. 14.
Pekka Rinne had 21 saves in that meeting, but he may be rested after stopping 36 of 39 shots Monday. He has a 3.50 goals-against average while starting each game of this losing streak.
Backup Carter Hutton has won four straight starts with a 1.45 GAA, and he had 24 saves in a 3-2 win in his most recent meeting with New Jersey on Jan. 31, 2014.
The Devils (26-27-10) have put together a 5-1-1 stretch after beating Columbus 2-0 on the road Saturday. Still, they're nine points back of Boston for the East's second wild-card spot, and that could be why they appear to be shifting their focus to next season.
New Jersey sent defenseman Marek Zidlicky to Detroit for a conditional draft pick prior to Monday's trade deadline after dealing Jaromir Jagr to Florida for two picks last week.
General manager and co-coach Lou Lamoriello, however, refutes the idea that they've given up on this season, and cites Adam Larsson's improvement and the expected return of fellow blue-liner Damon Severson from an ankle injury.
"If these players had not proven themselves ready to play and that they were ready for minutes, then you wouldn't do this," Lamoriello said of the Zidlicky trade.
Larsson, 22, has six of his 18 points over the past six games, but he failed to get one Saturday.
Cory Schneider is expected to be in net, and he's 4-1-1 with a 1.31 GAA and two shutouts in his last six starts. His 33-save shutout against the Blue Jackets was his fourth of the season, one back of his career high set with Vancouver in 2013.
"We start with our goaltender and go through our defense and get to our forwards," Lamoriello said. "Right now, that's sort of our asset, our strength. So you work off of that."
Schneider is 0-1-1 with a 3.85 GAA in three career meetings with Nashville, making 35 saves Feb. 14.
