KEY GAME INFORMATION
OTTAWA: LAST SEASON: 37-31-14, 88 points, finished 11th in the Eastern Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Paul MacLean, fourth season with Ottawa, 102-79-30.
ADDED: RW Alex Chiasson, C David Legwand.
LOST: RW Alex Hemsky, C Jason Spezza.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Bobby Ryan. The right winger is in the final year of a five-year, $25.5 million deal, and according to general manager Bryan Murray has decided to wait before determining whether to re-sign. Murray noted the sides will talk ''in October or November to get something done.''
OUTLOOK: It was only 2012 and 2013 when many thought Ottawa was a franchise on the ascent after back-to-back playoff appearances. Now the Senators are facing an uncertain future as Ottawa lost centers Daniel Alfredsson and Spezza the last two offseasons. There is a very real possibility the organization may have to deal Ryan and Methot during the season if the players cannot come to terms with the team. It is not a playoff formula.
LOS ANGELES: LAST SEASON: 46-28-8, 100 points. Finished third in Pacific Division. Won the Stanley Cup.
COACH: Darryl Sutter, 4th season with Kings, 98-57-24; 15th overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Adam Cracknell.
LOST: D Willie Mitchell, C Colin Fraser.
PLAYER TO WATCH: D Brayden McNabb. Mitchell's departure was the only significant change to the Kings' championship roster, and they hope the bruising McNabb can make the full-time NHL leap into his spot.
OUTLOOK: This tenacious, balanced team has won two of the last three Stanley Cup titles, playing a record 64 postseason games in that stretch. There's no reason to think the Kings can't contend for three crowns in four years, an NHL feat that hasn't been accomplished since Edmonton did it in 1990.

*Senators-Kings Preview* ========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Ottawa (25-23-10) at Los Angeles (29-18-12), 10:30 p.m. EDT

The last time the Los Angeles Kings reeled off eight straight wins, they eventually lifted their second Stanley Cup in three seasons - and that was last spring.

The Kings are now trying to match the longest winning streak in franchise history Thursday night, when they look to continue their dominance of the Ottawa Senators.

Last season, Los Angeles (29-18-12) turned around a sluggish stretch by winning eight games in a row, and the team has matched that run after beating Detroit 1-0 on Tuesday.

The Kings last won nine in a row from Jan. 21-Feb. 6, 2010.

Like last season, the current streak came after a major turnaround - Los Angeles had won just one of its previous eight. The team is also third the Pacific Division, but only one point ahead of the playoff cutoff in the Western Conference.

"It's tough to compare teams. Every year is different and every situation is different," right wing Justin Williams said. "You go through ups and downs each season that are never really the same. ... There's a lot of familiar faces, and when push comes to shove, I know the guy sitting next to me is going to get it done."

One of them is Jonathan Quick, who has a 1.63 goals-against average while starting every game in this run. His 20 saves against the Red Wings made Williams' first-period goal stand up.

"He's been a rock throughout this winning streak, and he'll continue to be," Williams said. "He's got a heavy workload right now, but he's going to battle like he always does. It just feels like some nights you look at him and you look at the saves he makes and you think, you know what? He's not letting anyone score tonight."

Quick owns a 2.18 GAA while winning five of six career meetings with the Senators, and the Kings are 12-1-0 with a tie in 14 all-time home matchups. They've won six straight there over Ottawa, with the lone loss a 4-3 defeat on Jan. 11, 2000.

He had 32 saves Dec. 11 when Los Angeles won 5-3 at Ottawa, its fourth straight victory in the series overall.

Jeff Carter has three goals and four assists in three games against the Senators. The center had three points in the most recent meeting at Staples Center on Oct. 9, 2013, and his second goal delivered the 4-3 overtime victory.

The Senators (25-23-10) have won three in a row and five of seven after beating Anaheim 3-0 on Wednesday to open their five-game Western Conference road trip.

Like the Kings, Ottawa's win streak is being spurred by superb goaltending. Andrew Hammond has been in net for all three wins, and his 25 saves against Wednesday was good enough for his first shutout.

The rookie, who has allowed three goals in this run, likely will start again since Craig Anderson (hand) and Robin Lehner (concussion) are hurt.

"It's something I really didn't see coming probably a month ago, but hockey's a strange sport with goaltenders," Hammond said. "You just try to be ready if your name does get called."

Kyle Turris has been red hot with five goals and five assists in seven games, finding the net in three consecutive games, and Erik Condra had a first-period goal Wednesday to give him six points during a career-high five-game point streak.

The Kings acquired defenseman Andrej Sekera from Carolina on Wednesday for prospect Ronald McKeown and a conditional first-round draft pick. Sekera has two goals and 17 assists in 57 games after recording a career-high 44 points in 2013-14.
