| | | CALGARY: LAST SEASON: 35-40-7, 77 points, finished 13th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Bob Hartley, fourth season with Calgary, 383-291-61-45 overall.
ADDED: LW Brandon Bollig, D Deryk Engelland, G Jonas Hiller, LW Mason Raymond.
LOST: D Chris Butler, LW Mike Cammalleri.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Johnny Gaudreau. Offense was a major issue for the Flames, who finished 23rd and 24th, respectively, in goals per game (2.46) and power play percentage (15.7). Gaudreau, the reigning Hobey Baker winner, recorded 80 points (36 goals and 44 assists) in 40 games with Boston College.
OUTLOOK: With the possible exception of John Tortorella, who attempted to fight his way into the Calgary dressing room during the first intermission of a Jan. 18 game in Vancouver to ostensibly express his displeasure about a line brawl following the opening faceoff, Hartley and the Flames earned praise around the NHL for their hardworking style of play. Even with the addition of Gaudreau and friends to the lineup, don't expect the Flames to change their modus operandi. But it's too much to ask the Flames to compete for a playoff berth. | | NEW JERSEY: LAST SEASON: 35-29-18, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Peter DeBoer, 4th season with Devils (102-76-34); 7th overall in NHL (205-183-70).
ADDED: LW Mike Cammalleri, LW Martin Havlat, C Scott Gomez, G Scott Clemmensen.
LOST: G Martin Brodeur, D Anton Volchenkov, D Mark Fayne.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jaromir Jagr. Led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 43 assists in remarkable season in which he played in all 82. Can he do it again at 42-years-old. If he does, the Devils have a shot at getting back into the playoffs for the first time since reaching NHL Finals in 2011-12.
OUTLOOK: After finishing with fourth fewest goals in the league, the Devils hope free-agent signees Cammalleri (26 goals) and Havlat (12 goals in 48 games) can boost the scoring, along with Adam Henrique, who scored a career-high 25-goals last season. With Broduer not re-signed, Cory Schnedier will get most of the work in goal after posting a 1.97 goals against average in 46 games last season. Defense allowed 208 goals, ninth best in the league. |

*Flames-Devils Preview* =======================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Calgary (32-24-4) at New Jersey (25-26-9), 7:30 p.m. EDT
Having played a significant role in New Jersey's longest win streak in two seasons, Cory Schneider should get the chance to keep the Devils rolling by adding to his recent strong the Calgary Flames.
New Jersey will seek its fifth consecutive victory Wednesday night while trying to send the visiting Flames to a fourth straight loss.
The Devils (25-26-9) have won four in a row for the first time since a five-game run Feb. 3-10, 2013. Schneider stopped 38 shots in a 3-0 victory against Arizona on Monday, and Michael Cammalleri scored twice in the third period.
Schneider has allowed a combined four goals while appearing in each of the four victories, which have all come during a season-high six consecutive home games. New Jersey, 10-1-2 in its last 13 games on its own ice, will end that lengthy stay at the Prudential Center on Friday against Boston.
"I think a lot of moving parts here are in sync. Even when we're having maybe a bad stretch or two, it's not killing us," he said. "We've got a little bit tougher schedule coming up here. Calgary is a very good team and so is Boston. We have to make sure we keep our foot on the gas."
Schneider figures to face a Flames team that he's gone 3-1-0 with a 1.48 goals-against average in the last four meetings. The lone loss in that stretch was a 1-0 defeat in New Jersey on April 7, his only game against Calgary while in a Devils uniform.
Scott Clemmensen, recalled from the minors Monday because of Keith Kinkaid's lower-body injury, was in net during the Flames' fourth consecutive win in the series, a 5-4 shootout victory in Calgary on Nov. 22.
Calgary, though, is heading into this game having cooled off from an 11-4-0 stretch. A 1-0 defeat at the New York Rangers on Tuesday was their third in a row.
The Flames have also dropped back-to-back road games after winning six of their prior seven and those struggles have dropped them just outside of playoff position in the Western Conference, one point behind Minnesota.
"The next game is as close to desperate as we have been all season. It's pretty close to a must-win game for us," captain Mark Giordano said. "When teams are getting points every night, you can fall out of it. We've got to stop this."
Curtis Glencross had two goals in the win over New Jersey in January, including the tying one with five seconds left in regulation. Jiri Hudler also scored with 2:22 remaining and had the deciding shootout goal.
Glencross has one assist in his last 12 games while Hudler had five goals and two assists in a seven-game stretch before going pointless in his last two. Hudler has one goal and six assists in a five-game point streak against the Devils.
With backup Karri Ramo having started Tuesday, the Flames will likely turn to Jonas Hiller for this one. Hiller hasn't faced the Devils since a 3-2 overtime win for Anaheim on Dec. 20, 2013, and is 2-2-2 with a 2.29 GAA in six career meetings.
Adam Henrique scored a goal in each of his three career games against Calgary and registered two assists. He has one goal and two assists in his last nine contests.
